At the northern edge of the Pacific Ocean lies an island chain with a stormy and turbulent history. The Aleutian Islands are the world’s longest archipelago, stretching 1,000 miles between Alaska and Siberia. With a volatile climate and a place where the people fight for survival and territory, the Aleutians have earned the nickname, the cradle of the storms.

Fascinating documentary. Travelled past the Aleutian Islands chain on a merchant ship from Vancouver to China just over twenty years ago, and boy, I'll never forget the storm that the ship encountered - the worst I had ever experienced. I wonder now if the abandoned military bases will be reinstated with the current situation between Ukraine and Russia.

Stationed at Adak in the mid 80's. I was enthralled with the stark beauty of the islands, but I had zero knowledge of the history. I found lots of old Quonset huts were in various parts of the island but I wish I would have known more of the history at the time.

I worked on Shemya in 1979. Beautiful water. Wild being in 30-70 mph wind with dense fog. Great experience being there. We had old rotted Quonset huts there too. Must have been horrible living like that.

Human nature. We don't blame beavers for tearing down trees or other animals destroying their environment. Self-hatred or self-righteousness? Kind of funny trashing humans on a computer. Or that you even have time to do so all due to all the destruction. Enjoy the results while complaining about it. Wow.

@MrWaterbugdesign That's probably because beavers and animals in their native habitat are a part of their environment and they do not overhunt and overlog forests to the point of extinction.

I have been fishing in the Bering sea for awhile now. I come from a fairly boring area in the lower 48 but the Aleutian Islands are my favorite place I’ve been to. I haven’t seen anything like it. I’d love to move here

The Japanese did not gain “a foothold in the United States”. Alaska did not become a state until 1959.
@MrWaterbugdesign
@MrWaterbugdesign 6 ай бұрын
Alaska was an organized incorporated territory which most people consider part of the "United States" which is a country name, not a requirement to be an actual state to be part of. The US purchased the Alaska territory so it was clearly "our land". But I get everyone now creates their own meanings for words and invent history, so enjoy.

@MrWaterbugdesign
@MrWaterbugdesign 6 ай бұрын
So you don't think native people didn't slaughter people they found on land they wanted? Native Americans certainly enslaved each other, battled and killed each other at every chance. The US just happen to be the next wave of people taking land from other people. Someday other people will probably slaughter us too. That's normal human behavior that has gone on no doubt from the beginning. All species fight for their place. IMO it's degrading to native people to call them repressed. Many native people were proud warriors and they fought the US well. Just because they didn't win every battle doesn't mean they should be pitied. If native Americans had worked together instead of incessantly fighting each other they could have probably kept Europeans out. Many native American groups at different times worked with Europeans to slaughter their enemy native American groups. Sure, forget history and just blame the US for everything if it makes you feel righteous. Enjoy.
