Yeah, I always thought that public high schools in the US have decreased the academic rigor in the last decades compared to other countries. Which is quite ironic, since the best private universities in the world are in the US. I feel that the curriculum is quite outdated and does not prepare you for the modern world.

US schools give away good grades out of fear of being sued by parents. Their main priority now is to TRY to avoid controversy and trauma. Kids figure out they don't have to study hard. At least the advanced programs still output future STEM leaders, for now.

@@DOFT.mp4 But not all American high schools offer those programs. In particular rural and inner-city schools often lack the funding and personnel to teach AP courses. Part of the problem is that we (in the U.S.) rely on both state and local funding for public education, and in many states a) the state funding has either been cut back or at least hasn’t kept up with increased costs and b) school districts with low tax revenues (meaning low populations or low district incomes) suffer from that lack of local funding. The obvious answer would be to federalize education, with all schools funded by the federal government but you then end up with the “states’ righters” and other conservative groups screaming about “government indoctrination” in education. They much prefer control by the states and even local school boards so that the “indoctrination” (which has no place in elementary and secondary schools to begin with) is more in line with their ideologies. Many will disagree with me, but it is a fact that in the funding and curriculum control battles waged in American public schools, education suffers and quality teachers don’t want to put up with the stress and hassle for the subpar wages we pay.

The conservatives that I know in the U.S who don’t have a college degree are convinced that colleges are liberal indoctrination factories and think that too much is spent on education in general. The conservatives with college degrees assure me that the education of their children is very important. Many conservatives think that the Dept. of Education should be eliminated. I have no idea how they think we are going to maintain our “American exceptionalism”.

Contrarily, one's first job in campus recruitments usually sets up one's career trajectory to an extent. One could correct it with effort in the following years, but the initial push from higher grades gets one into the best paying or just the best companies / jobs in the region and industry. By 30 or 35, though, all such factors level out, so then what you say is correct. Having said all that, personally, I prefer to be someone with lower grades but real understanding of the subject, then having high grades and poor understanding. We need to have more project work in addition to objective tests in education.

As a person of experience in IT, I can say with confidence that Indian parents just want our achievements to brag to others in their social group. They actually do not value our opinions, beliefs, advice, or intelligence. The usual retort to us if we try to correct them is : "Don't lecture me, I made you and educated you. Be grateful and obey what I say. I don't care how much you earn, I am your parent, I know better." They will never consider that a Masters degree or PhD holder might know better than them. The hypocrisy and arrogance is very blatant.
