I swear, I'm buying a huge turtle plant this year and I'm going to try your methods out for sure! I've gotten the hang of it over these past few months and my little baby is finally starting to grow. I'm definitely ready to take on a bigger plant now that I've become accustomed to what this plant likes. Humidity and lots of it lol. The lava rock has worked out quite well for me so I really appreciate the tips and tricks that have worked for you. Have a wonderful day! Is it possible to use Reptibark/ orchid bark in the substrate to replace lava rock, that like you use in your substrate? (the orchidbark/ reptibark is in the substrate mix of Serpadesigns)

I like how you explain what you need and what to do for a project. It’s simple and precise. I have to admit, the cadence of your voice is soothing to listen to. I’ve always wanted SOT, but hesitant to buy some because they seemed hard to take care of. I think I’ll give it a try and just make sure I have some lava rock handy, just in case. 💚

When you showed the picture of the brown plant at the beginning I burst out laughing. My plant has been looking more and more like that lately and I couldn’t figure out why. Oh my goodness, this exact same thing happened to me and I was so upset. Its a picky plant for sure but once it's under the right conditions it thrives. Great video. Very helpful

I did not know they liked high humidity! I bought a cutting off etsy and placed it on top of some wet coco coir/pumice mix and put it on my windowsill. All the plant has had is an open window next to it for the last 5 months, and I live in London, and it is growing like a beast! This is interesting, might try now to propagate it and grow the other one near a diffuser to see what happens. Thank you for the video! Easy on the ears and on the eyes.

Thanks man. Its quite and expensive plant here so i was gutted when it turned to slime. A few strands survived in little bottle terrariums and ive been desperately trying to increase numbers. I will definitely give this a go.

I am a collector of plants and have fallen in love with these sort of succulents. I unfortunately just watched my string of hearts suffer the same way. I tried to propagate it but the moss I was using molded and they died. I just finally received a large string of turtles and do not want it to suffer in the same manner. The hearts did great in my south facing window for a while and were thriving but then all of a sudden, bleached and just died. I do not have the ability to put the turtles in a terrarium so how can I make sure they do well? Would a humidifier in the same room suffice?

Instead of the Lava rock can I use the Kittyfriend Pink cat litter that I use for my Bonsai soil? Seeing as Lava rock is also used for Bonsai soil I think the cat litter would be okay but just thought that I`d check. Thank you in advance for any response, cheers.

I have a very happy string of turtles that is in a hanging pot. I keep it in my bathroom now d/t its moisture need but I am concerned about finding the perfect light situation. I had it in a south facing window and noticed that the strings themselves began to turn red and the turtle markings on the leaves are bleaching. I want to keep the markings of course, this is what attracted me to this plant but ate they like string of pearls in the way that they require light on the crown to stay full on top? Also, what kind of light does it have in its original environment. Can I grow it in a darker area of my home so longas there is moisture? I do not want it to go bald from lacking the right light but I am loosing all my largest turtle shells. The leaves are thick and healthy but you cannot see the markings. Do you have some advice for me? Also, I have propegated by strands planted into soil as well as just the leaves so long as the sister stem that attaches to the main stem is still attached. The leaf method takes a lot longer but if this plant starts is cactus soil, moss, perlite, and charcole, it does well. I hope you can answer my questions.

Mine is quite long about 6-8 inches in a 6 inch pot I think, and I had an issue with ants getting into it, I took it over to the sink and dowsed it with water and you should have seen the ants come out of it!! It is recovering , and I felt so bad when I saw those ants coming out of it!! I just kept running water into it until they all came out, still going strong............thank goodness.........

Yep! Pilea glauca is one of my favorites. A 2cm layer of lava rock will help it off the surface of the soil and prevent any dampening off issues

After a little reading, it seems that it could work but I've never tried it. Overwatering would be the main concern so I suppose, on paper, the lava rock would counter that. Give it a go! I'd be curious to see how you get on :D

I'm on my 3rd cutting 🤦♀️ I have bought better cuttings this time and invested in one of the small grow pods with the fan and grow light/timer lol P.s, first time was too much water in spag moss and it rotted away, second time in a diy mini greenhouse (bag over a pot) and then it got too much sun on accident and turned to crisp! I'm an amateur, getting there lol. I'll update you in a week!

Sphagnum moss would work but I like using lava rock as it eliminates any worry of the roots sitting in constantly wet substrate.

I had a big, beautiful mother plant that I had for many, many years! I started it when I lived in Santa Fe, NM from cuttings I had gotten from a friend online. That was around 2008. It made it through five moves, 2 in Santa Fe, then from Santa Fe to southern WA State and on to northern WA State to the Puget Sound area. I am on my third place here in that area and have lived here in my current place for about four years now. The plant made it through all those moves like a champ! I have taken dozens and dozens of cuttings from it over the years to make little gift plants for friends. Now, last Fall it suddenly just started slowly dying off! The plant was thick and gorgeous! Now it looks as though it's gone through chemo or something! It's really sad! No matter what I've done to try to help it, it's just sinking. I have now taken some cuttings from it from what's left and have started a few little plants but nothing is growing quite like that one did back at the beginning. At least, not yet. I'm going to try this method and see what happens! What do I have to lose! Right?

I do have a question, would using the same kind of bark you use for orchids work? Since you said the plants naturally grows on trees. Would that work to propagate.

My local shop is having a SOT craze and the suppliers aren't able to meet demand. I've been entrusted with some cuttings to prop at my house. If/when they grow, they'll be returned to the store for sale. I'm feeling the pressure. Tomorrow, we'll use your method and see how it goes.

Update for anyone who sees this: I tried one load of cuttings in perlite and one in orchid bark with a sprinkle of coco coir. Both containers are rooting and almost ready to go into their nursery pots to fill the orders for the store. The bark had the earliest result and the roots are more well developed, if that helps anyone.

I'm in NZ and String of Turtles are not readily available. I have a small rooted strand currently growing on seed mix, I'm considering placing the strand on a small section of Punga Log - do you think this is a good idea and is it going to work?

I had to Google what a punga log was... haha. It'll work if the environment is humid enough. That really is the key to growing Peperomia prostrata epiphytically.

I wouldn't as it's not an epiphyte. It does propagate easily though, you can use the same soil method as here but with extra lava rock - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n8hircSkkri2e58.html

It can take a while to establish but Peperomia prostrata does put on a good few cm of growth per year, if the conditions are right. There are many variables that come into consideration; what kind of light is the plant getting? What kind of soil is it planted in? Is the atmosphere humid? Often, but not always, when a plant flowers it can be a sign of distress.

Despite this Peperomia species quite similar (in term of leaves, epiphyte) to the known "String of Hearts" (SOH) plant; would you think it is suitable for SOH to be acclimatized in the terrarium environment?

Allow the soil to dry between waterings. As a rule of thumb, Peperomia's hate wet soil! Give it bright light but no direct sun and take cuttings if all else fails! I've never grown ruby cascade but you could probably use my method in this video.

i used this method and now my string of turtles has something like super fuzzy roots? are these roots or did I do something wrong? and also how often do you open the box to let them get some air? 😅

Haha that's normal! The fuzzy roots are due to the humid environment. I open the lids once every few days for 10 mins, give or take. 🙂

Yep! I'd try and use a fine grained pumice. It may not have the same water retentive qualities but I'm not 100% on that.

My string of turtles stems are growing very thin and brown. I have it for 4-5 months and haven’t seen any new, healthy growth. Tried to water it less, change a place and lighting. Nothing works. Its alive, but it cant manage to put out good thick patterned leaves.

Try this method out. SOT is an epiphyte and appreciates high humidity and a well drained substrate

I've only used bark as a soil additive or as a mulch. I've never tried to grow Peperomia prostrata on it but I suppose it would work.

Hi, Saw your video. Can you help me know what constitutes substrate? I dont know what is a substrate. I bought SOT and put it in perlite& cocopeat. Didn't water much either. It was lush and full when i bought. Now its sticking to the edges. Complete center portion melted off😒

Hello! Substrate is another word for soil. SOT is notorious for melting away and its nearly always due to moisture retentive soil. If using cocopeat and perlite then make sure you add enough perlite to open up the soil. SOT prefers a well draining medium and higher humidity

There seems to be some confusion online about whether String of Turtles is classified as an epiphyte, it's typically considered a ground-dwelling or trailing plant rather than a true epiphyte. There are no scientific or research papers online that consider this plant a true epiphyte, only plant selling websites incorrectly labeling it as a epiphyte because of quotes like this "Most Peperomia species are epiphytes" it's not fair to generalize them all this way.. for string of turtles, in its natural habitat, it often grows as a ground cover or low-growing plant on the forest floor, rather than attaching itself to other plants or surfaces.

But then what? You put the propagations in a pot and then they die within a week all over again. Is there any way to keep a small hanging pot of these in my home or a hanging pot will only work if I live in Florida or something? I’m so frustrated!! I dont know what you do for a living, but I think your should try to get some sponsorships so you can make some money for this great work you are doing. Look at Garden Answer on youtube. These two have built a business that supports their family.

I'd like it a little tiny bit more with a 1 month update showing the roots it would give confidence to the unbelievers not that im one but more people might trust and follow you
