S Florida gardener here ... I don't blame you for trying to avoid fences (for many reasons) ... but what about a thick living fence around the property, with lemon grass on the outside & pigeon peas on the inside. Lemon grass grows tall, self seeds, and as an added bonus can be used in bouquets, and for tea & cooking. The inside of the fence could be pigeon peas, which grow over 5', creates a lovely windbreak with yellow flowers, and the added bonus of being a nitrogen fixer (and the edible peas are 25% protein!)

I know you didn't want to add a fence for the deer, but I thought I would tell you what some farms do here. I will try to describe it the best I can. They use those white fiberglass post for livestock, make an x with them. The wire rope is attached to just the top part of each post that is in an x form. This is not tall or electrified because deer have depth perception issues, so they won't jump something if they can't tell where to land.

Thanks for the tip! We had the 3D deer fence you're talking about for a while but it became more difficult to manage as our growing space became larger. I might implement it again in the future as we settle our growing areas.

Hi Adam and Jenn! I am learning so much from you! I have a question about bachelor buttons. Do you plant them in landscape cloth like your other flowers or do you just throw the seeds on a prepared patch and hope for the best? I tried that technician the past with wild flower mix but the weeds took over and smothered all the flowers. Thank you 🙏 kindly for your reply!
@PepperHarrow

Our cut flower varieties are started in trays and planted out in landscape fabric. Our wildflowers ones are broadcast into the field. The key is to plant right before a rain in freshly prepared soil.

I'm about to make a generic bot comment, so brace yourself. You guys deserve to have way more subscribers! Your farm is so beautiful. Question: how do you get your dahlia stems to be so darn thick? Is that the variety you are growing or something about the soil health? Or something else?
@PepperHarrow
@PepperHarrow 3 жыл бұрын
Seriously, thanks a million for that comment! Sometimes I feel like KZfaq keeps us hidden! Ha! But I have noticed the algorithm has been picking us up more, thank goodness. We enjoy making the videos. I like editing and learning how to make better videos. I know I need to pick up the pace. It's the variety of dahlia that produces the thick stems. We do have some with skinny stems. But we focus hardcore on our soil health. Although we do till, we only till the top 3-4 inches of soil and add a lot of amendments. The soil has never been deep tilled.

Love your channel. I have a couple of questions if you don’t mind. First, what kind of radishes are you using? And secondly, do you til them under after a certain amount of time or harvest them or what? Thank you in advance.

With the radis cover crop, does it die becose of the cold or do you do something to kill it, like tarping the crop? Does it take a long time for the radish to decompose? Do you have to till the radish in the soil or can you just leave it and then use the plot to plant zinnias or other flowers? Thank you
@PepperHarrow
@PepperHarrow 3 жыл бұрын
The cold kills it off and it decomposes in the soil. We till in the spring and plant annuals in it. It makes wonderful fluffy soil come spring.

You can cover crop in early spring as well before you plant your dahlias. 👍

Thats what co fuses me about cover crops. I stopped tilling because the soil stays looser- for me- aging organic matter on top & leaving it. When I would till, it would loosen up and them within a month it would be compacted right back down... I'm scared to plant cover crops and then have trouble removing them without having to till them in or pull them like weeds! I feel like just loitering over them would leave them to regrow. I think I'm going to try them in just a small patch this fall...
