A discussion of various percussion caps as to size and fit on some of the more widely and available black powder revolvers. Also shown are some percussion caps that were likely available for shooters in the 50's and 60's. On the 1860 Uberti I said the #10 CCI's would be too large, I meant to say # 11's would be too large.

I have changed two sets of nipples with slix shots. I wasn't impressed with them over the stock Pietta and Uberti nipples. I have also been making my own with the Sharpshooter22 and using their Prime-All priming compound and I have actually had good results with the homemade percussion caps fitting both number 11 and 10 size nipples, but the priming compound seems to be much more corrosive than the store bought percussion caps. The best for my stock Pietta and Uberti nipples number 10s Remington and the 1075 Germany made ones seem to work best and fit best. The CCI number 10s work but you have to really set them with a small wooden dowels. Thank you for you video, it has been very informative. Thank you.

Appreciate the comment Carl. I just finished firing a Pietta over 60 shots without a single jam or misfire. That was a 1858 with stock nipples, not sure what style guns you put the Slix on ? Where I have had good luck is with the Colt style guns. Very interesting about the Sharpshooter22, will have to check out if I don't forget. I did hear about someone that had a cap go off, and I think it was with the wooden dowel, just thought I should mention that. Also, I had some extra Pietta nipples and lots of CCI #10's, so I set them in the lathe (could have used drill press), and took them down some with Emory. They are hardened, so file couldn't touch them. I discovered that a Dremel with a cutoff wheel properly applied also "removed the finger prints", and did so much faster. Thanks - good shooting. O.R.

Well done. I have had problems with caps for years. Niether of my revolvers seemed to fit any of the caps, with the exception of RWS 1075. I couldn't keep #10 Remington's on the nipples, even when pinched, and CCI #11 were only slightly more useable. Makes me wonder if there is any standard for cap sizes. This was all remedied when I bought "Tack of the Wolf" nipples which are sized to use CCI #110 caps. I rarely have a cap jam on the 1858, and the 1860 runs with very few problems, even with 30 grain Swiss fff (which nearly evaporates the spent cap). Again, thanks for doing this study/video.

This is just what we wanted O,R, an in depth study of nipples and caps, I had never thought that any shooter would just stick any old cap on his freshly loaded C&B revolver, but now I can see where the chainfires we hear about come from, I have heard of a shooter pinching their caps to give a tight fit, the next step is a chainfire! There is so much hot gas swirling around the back of the cylinder on firing that a chainfire is eventually inevitable, the main problem with these modern caps is they are so thin ,whereas Eley or F,Joyce caps have a .025" wall thickness, that means they stay in one piece when fired, whereas the modern cap is so thin they burst and drop into the action, causing people to think this is normal, it is not, and these things would never have been reliable enough to use in military service, I am afraid the cap sizes are like clothes sizes now, any size they care to put on the package will do, I have even bought cartridges with a different length to that stated on the box, all very casual ! Stay safe ! Chris B.

Something happened that might interest you. In a battle to see how cleaning the barrel between shots would improve grouping, I was loading one cylinder each time. Some powder hung up in the funnel and I only got a half charge. Didn't want to fire that into my group, so loaded another chamber and fired that. I was smart enough to put a ball on the half charged one, but when I fired it, the ball only lodged half way into the cone and of course jammed the gun. Taking it apart, I found that I had put the ball on the wrong chamber, and only the force of the cap had sent it into the cone. So, yes, there was a chamber half full of powder and there had been one shot fired. Not that it proves they come from the cap end, but sure adds to that idea. Oh, I couldn't just dump the half charge out because the gun was in a Ransom Rest. O.R.
@453421abcdefg12345
@453421abcdefg12345 2 жыл бұрын
@@oldranger3044 That is an interesting phenomenon, so the powder just sat there loose in the chamber without igniting, I think one factor is the gap between the barrel and cylinder, some guns have a huge gap, and if the shooter has not got the wedge tight that makes it even worst, the fact that just a cap almost got the bullet into the barrel is interesting, it means that had the ball been undersize it could have gone enough into the barrel to allow the cylinder to index, then the next shot would have caused a problem, I have spoken to shooters that have had a major blow up, they were convinced that they had loaded powder in the chamber, but a cap makes a loud bang, and with other bangs going on around it could be a cap only firing, I can see no other reason for a blow up on these guns, take care! CCI #10’s are ideal for sealing cones for longer term loading if you compress them tight with the hammer until it stretches the copper. I’ve tested them and found them watertight and 99% reliable over the past year.

Excellent idea, thanks. Pushing them down with the hammer is probably safer than using wood punch applied where they placed on because that is the side and if it were to go off #**&%. Great video. Sometimes replacement nipples are too long in the cone and will allow the cap to contact the recoil shield under the recoil of a fired round resulting in chain fire or even multiple chain fires. I’ve had to machine down the length of new nipples to fit a revolver with several brands of aftermarket nipples. My experience with caps over 51 years of shooting cap and ball revolvers are that the cci no. 11 caps are almost failproof even if you have a gun with small nips and have to pinch the cap some. Over the years, I’ve tried the other sizes but keep coming back to cci 11s. I used to love them alcan number 11s back in the 1970s. Can’t find them anymore. Now days I just use a drill press and chuck the nipples in and turn them down to fit the revolver and taper the cone to fit cci 11 since those are most plentiful in my part of the country.

Thanks. I agree totally about the #11's. The earlier reports and 2nd gen colts had smaller nipples and had to pinch even the #10 cci's so never used, or bought #11's. Recently I turned down some Pietta nipples to use my supply of #10's. First tried a file but wouldn't touch them. Hardened. Ended up using a dremel as it was spinning--that worked, just needed to be careful not to take too much. Thanks again for the comment and info. O.R.

Good video on this topic. Many do not realize the importance of properly fitting caps. The CCI caps are smaller than Remington brand. The nipples that came on my Pietta Remington revolver fit the Remington #10 caps perfectly. CCI #10 caps are too small. But I could find no Remington caps recently and had to switch over to the CCI. My revolver now has two sets of nipples. My Navy arms double barrel shotgun also takes size 10 caps and had the same issue when switching brands. If the nipples are too large, I chuck them in my drill and file them down to fit the caps. With two sets of nipples I am able to use whichever brand of caps I can find.

Hi James. I really think you will like whatever, because although there are differences, they both have attributes. I think you are talking 1861 NAVY because the army is an 1860 and has a larger grip. I'm not familiar with the Pietta 1861, so because of that, might steer you towards the Uberti, but again, rather not say much just in case you get the "Friday" one. If you are talking 1860 Army, then I have both, and both are great. The Pietta has a 1-30 twist, and the Uberti has 1-18, or about that. So, unless Pietta has changed,(mine are 10 years old), that is one difference. Both seem to shoot fine. Get out your favorite coin and have at it. (Lots of folks probably disagree with a coin toss, but you can find about equal numbers in each camp.) Hope things work out for you. As far as caps, both should use the Remington #10's (which cost about the same as a bar of gold if you can find them) - next would be CCI 11's. Sorry I can't say what size for the German caps. O.R.

Guess I enjoy the challenge, and believe that many shooters of these style guns are in it because of something like that. If it's only about self defense and making noise, maybe the 9mm is the way to go, but if not, then there is fun in the DIY ideas. Just one comment: If use them in the revolvers, keep a close eye on not getting the powder (if that is the way you go) up the sides of the caps. I have had a couple of chain fires that I am suspicious that I was a little too sloppy in my production, and hot gas got under the cap enough to ignite that powder that maybe was too far up the sides. Thanks for a interesting video I changed the nipples on both my revolvers. I think they were called slick the name escapes me and I through the box out. Any way they work great with the #10 caps. I have the 1858 Remington in .44 caliber and the same in .36 caliber. Have you ever heard of dripping candle wax over the caps after they were on of course? I heard they did that during the Civil war . If they were not going to fire the piece for a while on the march It made it water proof. I tried it and all the cylinders fired fine. Any truth to that?
@oldranger3044
@oldranger3044 2 жыл бұрын
Haven't heard of that one, but it sure makes sense. The guns had to be ready, and probably needed to go for long periods without being fired. As far as the ones you changed, if they have two holes opposite in the sides, then they no doubt are the sliXshot nipples. I've had good luck with them as they seem to greatly improve reliability as far as cap jams. Remington's probably don't have near as many jams as do the colt style. I'm wondering about your 36 as to the age, and twist rate. Also what make? If the rifling seems to make about a half turn in the 8" barrel, than it may be the 1-18 twist. O.R.

@oldranger3044
@oldranger3044 6 ай бұрын
That’s correct. As they say, close, but no cigar. On two I have of about the same age, the Uberti cylinder made it into the Pietta, but, there was end play. It did lock up, but needed assistance to rotate, as the hand and notches aren’t quite right. The Pietta cylinder was a bit too long for the Uberti, but the arbor pin fits through the cylinder, so the arbor holes are close to the same. Anyway, that’s why conversion cylinders made by companies like Howell Arms list them separately as they don’t interchange. O.R.

@@oldranger3044 Thanks for the confirmation. I decided to order a uberti last week. Thought I had done enough research to make a good purchase. I then hit all of the close gun shops to gather things I would need. None of them had much cap and ball stuff. One of them did have a Pietta just like the Uberti I just ordered. It looked pretty nice and they were asking 250 for it. At first I thought that would give me a spare cylinder and a pair of remingtons. Well at least the cap shortage will force me to learn more before I shoot it. I don't think I'd try the home made caps yet. I'll wait on some manufactured ones. Thanks again from "an old Sapper"
