16:56 Clarisse also works extra hard to get noticed by Ares. Ares RARELY shows attention to his daughters, more so focusing on his sons so she was really proud to have been noticed and given a gift so when a kid whos never fought before and JUST came to camp broke it, that was kind of, in a way, telling Ares that "hey, you made a mistake giving this to her, she's not as great as you think"
@poisonxivy8602

I think that's such a shame. In the myths he had a lot of daughters and he was a good father to them, even murdering Poseidon's son who r***ed one of them. He always came to their aid and his treatment of women was better than any of the other deities. I guess Rick tried to go for a more straightforward characterization but I wish we could have seen some of that aspects in Ares. Maybe in the show we will, who knows!

something to point out: There are 12 cabins in the camp, but five are empty. Those of the three brothers: Hades, Zeus and Poseidon. And the other two are just symbolic: Hera, wife of Zeus and goddess of marriage (which means, no illegitimate children) and the other is Artemis, sister of Apollo and goddess of hunting, she is the virgin goddess. (no children either).

3 are empty (4 before Percy is claimed by Poseidon). There are cabins for Zeus, Poseidon, Ares, Hermes, Hephaestus, Apollo, Artemis, Hera, Demeter, Aphrodite, Athena, and Dionysus. Of those, Hera and Artemis have no demigod children, and Zeus and Poseidon had no known _living_ demigod children because of the pact. Hades and Hestia are not on the Olympian council (Hestia having stepped down to make way for Dionysus), so they don't have cabins. Although if they did have cabins, those would also be empty.

Also regarding the pact to no longer have children between Zeus, Poseidon and Hades, the Blind Wave crew (probably Eric the most) might be interested to know it began after WW2 as the children of those three were heavily involved and helped drive humanity closer to potential doom. I don't think it's necessary to include in the show, but it's an interesting point that is in the book.

Argus was originally scripted to appear in Episode 2, but per Riordan's news page, he was cut due to budget reasons (namely the cost of the CGI needed to depict the hundreds of eyes all over his body) and because the episode was "already so crowded with so many characters and scenes that we decided having Argus there also would be too much".

The online discourse over Annabeth being played by Leah Jeffries is ridiculous. Personally, I think The author made a great decision casting her. Not only does she play the role perfectly, but it still does kind of play into breaking stereotypes about intelligence, and I'm glad for the African American kids who watch this and have a chance to see themselves in this smart, highly skilled, daughter of the goddess of wisdom.

I mean, it's still valid to be disappointed. Like, personally, Annabeth is possibly my all-time favorite fictional character, and I formed a pretty strong personal attachment to her and my visualization of her. And when you change a character's looks enough, it's just impossible to reconcile the two characters in your head, at least for me. So for me it was a bit sad and disappointing just because over the years I had daydreamed so much about bringing that character more to life, and for a moment I though that dream would come true. This isn't anything against the actress, and I think she does an okay job in the role, and I do like the show. But there's still that character living in my head that I really wanted to see on screen, that I probably never will. And maybe this isn't a problem for a lot of people. Maybe most people's brain don't work in the same way, and they don't get strong emotional mental images of characters. But that doesn't make the disappointment of people like me invalid.
@reviewcentral8406
@reviewcentral8406 7 ай бұрын
@@peterlewis2178 Yeah, when the vast majority of people who feel like this use that disappointment to spew despicable racist hatred towards a 12 year old little girl that's when any consideration dries up. Maybe you're not doing that but so many people did this. It's always gross when people do it to anyone but to do it to a kid was especially disgusting. Most of ya'll have an issue with the girl being black because no one ABSOLUTELY no one points out that Percy is NOT blonde in the books either. No one brings up that Percy isn't a perfect depiction of the book character either, nor are multiple other castings. It's just the little black girl ya'll want to single out and bully.
@peterlewis2178
@peterlewis2178 7 ай бұрын
@@reviewcentral8406 It's not the vast majority, it's a very loud minority. The internet just gives it an echo chamber, and the media focuses on that narrative, which enforces it. And then people just assume that anyone else who's upset has to be one of those people. I mean, you literally just admitted that you're willing to completely throw all those people under the bus just because other people are racist and hateful, when you said "that's when any consideration dries up". I honestly hate it, because people use this on literally anyone who disapproves of literally any POC or female casting. Heck, even if you don't disapprove of the casting, but just have critiques about something that is also getting hate by racist/sexist people. It doesn't matter how valid your arguments are, people will just label you a racist or sexist for not liking it and refuse to even engage in a dialogue.

About Grover snitching on Percy in the show to protect him, remember that Percy also feel betrayed by Grover in the book, the plot just different. Remember how Percy found out that Grover talk about him with Chiron (Mr Brunner) in the Yancy academy about the lightning and percy being accused as a thief and all. Percy feel bettayed bcs "wtf is Grover talking about me behind my back? Wth is this silluet of horse creature? Wtf is happening? I thought Grover will be on my side but why is he hiding something from me?" This led to Percy left Grover were Grover supposed to company percy going home together from Yancy. They change the plot so his arrival to the camp alot faster but also still stick to the book how Percy feel betrayed by his only friend. It was spot on, in my opinion.

Been seeing a lot of people seem to misinterpret Grover in episode 1 so hopefully this clarifies everything. 1) Grover doesn't snitch on Percy. You guys kinda nailed this one but if you go back and rewatch the fountain scene you can make out the fountain tendrils grab Nancy before pulling her in. The choice to hide the effect seems to have confused people that Percy did in some ways push her in but he didn't and Grover knows this. So later when Percy gets expelled, Grover isn't snitching he full on lying to the school in order to get Percy discreetly away to his mom whom Grover and Chiron have already called and filled in and who was supposed to explain everything to Percy before Grover arrived early. A lot of book readers are getting confused to bc the book Percy takes out Ms. Dodds and then the school year continues with only Percy seeming to remember she existed. They go for weeks finishing out the year with Grover nervously hovering around Percy 24/7 to keep an eye out for any more monsters. Percy getting kicked out of school was actually a change made for the show in order to condense the chronology of the events. But Grover never snitched on Percy. He lied to keep him safe and then defied a God to his face to help Percy.

The way I see that moment of Annabeth going 'you still haven't figured this out yet?' is that she was genuinely surprised that Percy hadn't figured out this really obvious thing (and got cut off from explaining by the horn). just want to do some clarifications: •They said Annabeth is Athena’s daughter in this episode when Luke was talking to Percy. •There is no claiming scene or bathroom scene in the movie. Chiron just tells Percy that Poseidon is his father right after he wakes up, which I personally hate. you’ll see how much the movie messed up as the show goes on. •Clarisse wasn’t in the first movie so they kind of mashed up her and Annabeth into one character for the movie.

I don't know if they'll mention it in the show (maybe in the later seasons) but despite the fact that a lot of demigods are basically cousins, there's a lot of dating going on at camp. They explain it away with "The gods don't have DNA so it's ok." and the only hard and fast dating rule is demigods don't date someone of the same godly parent.

I love this episode! And seeing Eric being so invested in the show makes me so happy. I wanna go to the camp too! Before CTF Luke says "Annebeth is the head counselor of the Athena cabin". In the book, Zeus made Mr D camp director for 100 years. It's probably been a couple decades by now. Speaking of the book, I like the changes they made. The one detail that bothers me is that a lot of the campers seem to have 5 beads/pearls on their necklace. The editing is fine but I would have preferred less cuts. There is a video of Rick Riordan breaking down the capture the flag scene and Walker (Percy) and his stunt double had to fall down that hill 10 times. And Walker was actually afraid of Dior (Clarisse) when she came up to him. He thought that she was going to hurt him for real.

I dunno if anyone has said it yet (there's a lot of comments so I didn't read them all) but there's a huge difference between a Summer Camp and a Campground. Campground type camping can be anything from tents and hammocks to trailers and RVs. Summer camps usually have cabins or bunkhouses. Campground style camping, usually you go with your loved ones, camping as a family, with friends, or some people go by themselves to commune with nature, etc. Summer camp, you usually go to with a bunch of your peers and most of the time, a lot of the kids start off as strangers and make friends over the course of their time at camp. The camp in this show is that of the summer camp style of camping, so no tents. Not sure if it was the same in the books or movies because the TV show is the only Percy Jackson thing I've experienced so far 😊

Instead they finished out the year, but Percy wasnt' going to be allowed back for the next year. In the show, they have Percy leaving Yancy immediately, so something needed to provoke his expulsion. For Annabeth though, as far as I know, her blonde Caucasian look meant a lot to people who were blondes because they found her a subversion of the “dumb blonde”
@reviewcentral8406
@reviewcentral8406 7 ай бұрын
Literally no one refers to Annabeth as a dumb blonde in the books, and it isn't remotely a thing. I believe the author mentioned it once as a nice way to go against that stereotype and it's the same author who cast and defended the decision to cast Leah who plays her in the show. People bringing that up as a reason to use hateful racist attacks against a little girl are DESPICABLE.

Percy’s role in all of this was to be bait which he could have guessed because he knows Clarisse is after him and he’s not good for much else at that point. Annabeth leads him where she wants him - and Clarisse - to be and disappear because she knows Clarisse will not attack if shes there. That’s what she said she needed him for after all: winning capture the flag. And that’s how he perfectly fits in.

For Eric’s complaint about the ignorance thing, I want him to know that thats actually following the book pretty closely cause it happens a lot and Percy gets veryy frustrated😂😂 Also Calvin unintentionally used Mr.D’s nickname for Annabeth completely genuinely and I love that

I think the change with Grover snitching is to shorten the time it takes for Percy to be expelled. Cause in the book he wasn't expelled, just gaslit by Grover and Mr Brunner for months before the Minotaur scene. In the books (and general Greek myth) it's common for the gods to have kids with whatever gender human they taken a liking to. Apollo and Hermes are known to sire many children with both men and women. :D new viewer here and enjoying the takes so far!!!

Rick Riordan (the author) actually confirmed the reason behind Annabeth's casting. When the books came out, there was the trope of the "dumb blonde girl", and he was trying to subvert that trope by making her really smart. Now, the US has moved beyond that stereotype, but unfortunately, black people are looked down upon with a similar bias. So he made the really smart girl black to subvert that stereotype. Rick's intentions haven't changed. The US has.

Rick used to tell his son the Greek myths as bedtime stories, but when he ran out of stories, he made up a character with adhd and dyslexia who had a Greek god as a father. He then told the story to his class and they told him to get it published

Hey, loved the reaction! I noticed you made some comments on the editing and as a film editor / filmmaker myself I thought I'd offer some potential insight as to why the fight scenes may have been edited that way. I think that the most likely reason (from a technical standpoint) is that the editor cut between multiple different takes. When editing a scene we'll often use multiple different takes to find the best sections from each (which has the best/worst performance, which has the best cinematography/if there are shots that are out of focus or things in frame that we don't want to see, which takes have the best audio/ unwanted noise in the background) and stitch them together in a way that manipulates the sense of pacing compared to how the original scene was filmed, taking reactions or shots that were never intended to be used in a particular place and repurposing them to fit the scene (an example I love the most of this is the scene from Star Wars A New Hope - during the attack on the Death Star we see a shot of General Tarkin looking concerned - this was a shot from before they called action where the actor was preparing himself for the scene and they never intended on using it, with the footage being repurposed later and added in to create additional tension - for anyone else interested in editing I'd recommend watching Star Wars was made in the edit). Single long takes look good (or scenes where there are few cuts in general), but they take a long time to film and reset and if there are errors midway through (actors flub a line, there's unexpected noise in the background, or something in the background of the shot that they don't want) then a lot of the time the editors end up taking sections from multiple takes and reusing them anyway - much to their director's pain. This edit goes the complete opposite direction and makes loads of cuts, which is argubably a stylistic choice to show how chaotic and overwhelming the fight is, however in my experience some of the best editing is the subtle kind you don't even notice and too many cuts can result in the audience being taken out of the moment (as we see in the fight). To me at least, the quick cuts make it harder to notice mistakes that were made during the filming because the consistent action and the abrupt cuts make it harder to focus on the background details. Little things like continuity errors, placement of hands on weapons, placement of characters in the wider space - we see a few people change position in the frame between cuts but they get away with it because the focus changes and the actions of other characters mask it. I think Rick Riordan mentioned in an interview that for the fight scenes they used a mix of the actors and their stunt doubles so I feel that some of the quicker cuts where you can't see their faces are probably paced/cut in that way to avoid showing off that they're a stunt double. Its strange because I feel that the editing on the whole is pretty decent but there are a few moments here and there (this fight scene being one of them) where it feels a bit jarring. That being said, its clear that there were a lot of moving parts in this edit and the editor did a pretty decent job of managing the continuity of the scene.
