I watched the first movie before reading the book, and I really enjoyed it! Then I read the whole series before the second movie came out and understood why so many people disliked it. Their were so many differences and so many things that didn't get into the movie that really should have. The story was told far better in the book and I prefer it now. However, I still feel the movie is at least serviceable.

For me, I admire the _Lightning Thief_ movie purely for its technical qualities, such its production design, cinematography, and visual effects. And the acting isn't too bad. But even taking the fact that it's a horrible adaptation out of the equation, the movie on its own feels very phoned in, the characters have no arcs whatsoever, there's no dramatic tension, the conflict feels underdeveloped, and like so many Hollywood movies based on Greek Mythology, there are many inaccuracies (such as the Underworld being presented as Hell rather than the whole afterlife itself, Hades being portrayed as evil, and Persephone being in the Underworld during the Spring/Summer). Also, the movie has a habit of treating its characters (and therefore, the audience) like they're fucking stupid, such when Percy tries to kill the Hydra by CUTTING OFF ALL OF ITS HEADS! I mean, even if your knowledge of Greek Myth is pretty minimal, the whole "Hydra-Head-Regrowing" thing is practically common knowledge. So, as a movie, I give _The Lightning Thief_ a rating of 4/10.

One thing they explain in the books that they just completely leave out (like they did with most things) is the the mist. The mist is sorta of an illusion that mortals see to make things that they are seeing make sense to them like Grover’s legs or the hero’s fighting monsters in broad daylight. Also another thing (about why sally stayed with gabe), so in the movie they just talk about how bad he smells like physically but that’s only part of the reason monsters don’t smell Percy bc of gabe. But it’s also that gabe is such a trash human being that him being a terrible person also emits a terrible smell that wards off monsters so it’s not just his surface level smell.

I so hope this reaction means you guys are planning to check out the new Disney+ adaptation! This movie was a disappointment as an adaptation because it changed so much that the storyline is really completely different, so you will be surprised by a lot of the show's adaptation because it's going to be extremely faithful to the events of the books, and there are also entire characters that did not make it into the movies, though the actors did their best. I am super excited for it because I have loved Percy Jackson since I was in 4th grade, and now I'm in my first year as a teacher and I'm getting an adaptation that I really care about and looks amazing! I really connected with the story and the characters, and it led me to be a part of a lot of fandoms and fandom spaces over the years! It also, in some ways, helped me realize over the last few years that I also have ADHD.

LOL yeah dude "extremely faithful to the events of the books." They already changed annabeth's race. Whereas the movie only changed her hair and age a bit (which they tried to correct in the 2nd movie), the disney show changed her entire identity and race. My favorite part of this whole thing was rick riordan gaslighting his fans who grew up reading the books by calling them racist because they want annabeth and other characters to be portrayed as they were in the books. Count me out. I have no desire to partake in the late life crisis of virtuesignaling leftoid rick riordan and his wife who is a directer of the show. Leave it to american leftists to ruin beloved ips. This was the first novel I read as a kid right after immigrating to america form the middle east and I had no problems identifying and connecting with the characters as a non white person. Annabeth and Percy are some of my favorite fictional characters and the first series is still my favorite young adult novel. I guess race swapping percy was a tad too far for boomer man rick. It's interesting how he won't race swap percy, but is fine doing it to annabeth.

I mean this is what Rick Riordan(author of the books) had to say about the script for this movie(he never saw the actual movie): "Having said that, here’s the bad news: The script as a whole is terrible. I don’t simply mean that it deviates from the book, though certainly it does that to point of being almost unrecognizable as the same story. Fans of the books will be angry and disappointed. They will leave the theater in droves and generate horrible word of mouth. That is an absolute given if the script goes forward as it stands now. But the bigger problem is that even if you pretend the book doesn’t exist, this script doesn’t work as a story in its own right. The good news: It is eminently fixable. When I first read the script I’ll admit I was plunged into despair at just how bad it was. If I were intentionally trying to sabotage this project, I doubt I could have done a better job than this script. But as I began to make notes and look specifically at what was bothering me, I realized that the script could be made palatable to fans and the general movie-going audience without really changing its present scene structure, lengthening the script, or adding new sets that would increase the budget. I am choosing to take heart in your assurance that this script is not finished. That is one thing we can agree on: It needs help."

Fresh Water doesn't provide as much benefit as Sea Water does. It hints on this specifically a few times in the various books. Like in Book 2, it states that one of Percy's innate god abilities is he has perfect and exact navigational skill on the ocean. He knows where he is, exactly where he is at any given time while he's at sea. Whereas in Fresh Water, he doesn't get that benefit.

Honestly think it is terrible as a stand alone movie. And as an adaptation it is the worst I have ever seen. Harry Potter movies got a very good adaptation even when a lot was cut because they kept the core plot as well as characters. This adaptation is straight up not even close. As a standalone movie none of the characters have character arcs, the plot is messy and filled with plot holes. Quite a bit of stuff is a mess and very little good. As an adaptation it cut out all of Percy's personality. They cut out everyone's character arcs and set ups, especially Percy, Annabeth, Grover and Luke Mythological accuracy is something the books are praised for and there is so many inaccuracies in the movie that the book literally covers. One of the biggest examples is that Hades is not Satan. Hades watches over the equivalent of heaven, limbo, and hell and is a fair and nice caretaker of souls. He is one of the kindest and gods and also has the best marriage out of all the Olympians. Persephone is also not supposed to be there since she stays with her mother Demeter during Spring and Summer and would never betray Hades. Along with multiple smaller inaccuracies They also took away all the creativity of books and Witt. Monsters and figures were better incorporated into the modern time. The characters somehow felt dumber than their 12 year old and in Grovers case 28 year old(satyr age slower) counterparts. Key example is Percy cutting the Hydra. He knows that much Good things about the film It gathered attention to the series, Grover was a complete 180 but at least the replacement had personality which was more than the rest of the cast. Effects were also good. And the Lotus scene was the most accurate to the books and also the best scene. It helped bring the scene to live as to how indulgent the place was. And the actors chosen would have been perfect if they were younger

What’s crazy is how they go so many things wrong. One of the key things is that Poseidon doesn’t speak to percy at all really, yet multiple times in the beginning Poseidon reaches out to Percy. Which later makes the “he never talks to me” scenes make sense. Another thing is that he doesn’t even know about the lightning bolt until AS he’s leaving on the adventure, so Dobbs and Hades telling him to give back the lightning bolt again makes no sense because nobody is supposed to know

The Percy Jackson books were my entire early teen years, i reread them last summer after graduating and they’re still so good even as a grown up omg The movies themselves are not even that terrible, its just that they’re so inaccurate, especially cuz the books literally read so much like a movie so they could’ve just used the exact books as scripts but noooooo. The story also work so much better in the books, but that’s often the case Also the pen being the sword always gets me, its funny in the movie but even better in the book The scene at 48:36 literally iconic, while I wouldn’t describe the movie like that but that scene is everything, the movie, the shots yes

It also depends on what part of the Underworld you go to. According to The Heroes of Olympus series, Tartarus looks alot like what we see in this movie sort of. Desolate, inhospitable, and dangerous. But that was just Tartarus itself. It didn't include realms like Elysian Fields or Asphodel.

I have to say, I've grown up all my life being someone who has genuinely enjoyed both the movies and the books of Percy Jackson. I obviously fell in love with the books, being a big reader who loved fantasy. But something about the movie was charming to me too. I don't even really like to compare them, just treat them as separate entities. I've just always loved Mythology and growing up I got my hands on whatever I could find. Though I still do hold a lot of respect for the original author and I'm sad he was also unhappy with it.

to be fair, the original idea for the 1st HP movie was to take all 4 Harry Potter books (that were out at the time) and transform them into 1 movie...... they just... ended up not going with that cuz I believe JKR said no. So when you fuck with the book, this is what you get. People who have no knowledge of what the story is SUPPOSED to be might enjoy it, but it destroys any built in book audience you'd get which is never a good thing when you can do a faithful adaption and get book fans + new fans.

I need you guys to react to the new Percy Jackson TV series, because I can’t let you go through life thinking this is what Percy Jackson is. As an avid fan of the books, I think this movie is entertaining if I don’t think about the books. This movie somehow simplifies and overcomplicates the story while changing the plot. But hey, it made me a fan of Logan Lerman and Alexandra Dadarrio. The Lotus Casino and Rosario Dawson’s look are the best parts of this movie.

I have read the book and watched the movie. Percy's age is different in the book he is 12 and in movie he is 17. The who plot is different. Percy went on vacation with his mother after the museum incident not on the run. He defeated the Fury not Charon. Camp half blood was more like a summer camp than a training camp. Capture the flag was days later not immediately and it went differently. That was there when Posiden claimed Percy. Percy was given the quest to find the master bolt. Percy is not allowed to be in the air if he did Percy would be in Zues domain so the flying shoes that Luke gave him would be useless. The encounter with Medusa was accurate. The Hydra wasn't in this one it was Echidna the mother of monsters and it was at the St. Louis arch. Grove was talking about searching for Pan and he has his horns. Percy did a side mission for Ares god of War to get a shield. The Lotus Casino was accurate. Percy got the pearls at the San Monica peir. Percy fought Procrustes. The entrance to the underworld was in a studio not the Hollywood sign. When Percy got into the underworld the shoes dragged Grover to Tartarus. The Master bolt magically appeared in Percy's bag. Perspone was not there because of the time of year. When the pearls was smashed Percy was still in California not to the Empire State building. Percy fought and beat Ares not Luke. Luke's betrayal was at the end of the book and Percy was poisoned. Grover went to find Pan.

in addition, they kinda screwed up with poseidon's messages to percy, as well as the whole "zeus forbade the other gods from interacting with their children" bit. the former kinda undermines percy's character even more than they already did (they made him a lot more disrespectful to the poeple around him and book percy wouldn't just try to sneak away without his friends), by having someone else solve all the puzzles for him (like poseidon whispering to him not to eat the lotus cookies instead of having him find that out himself), the later creates a massive inconsistency from the books, since the whole reason character like luke hate the god is that they almsot never interact with their children and no one knows why. hence their resentment for the gods, because they feel like their parents have abandoned them for no reason. by giving them a reason it undermines the whole conflict, since now they have an explanation for why their parents aren't around and wouldn't resent them as much, since they'd understand it wasn't their choice to do so. edit: also, in a clever bit of subverting expectations, hades definitely wasn't the bad guy in the books. hades, despite being the lord of the underworld, isn't evil, as much as the movie didn't get that note and insists on making him an evil satan expy. he opposed percy for a bit, yes, but only because one of his own items got stolen, so he figured "that guy stole from zeus, so he must be the one who stole from me, too".

Percy Jackson is my all-time favorite book series. It means SO much to me. This movie is actually kinda good, cheesy as hell but good, when you don’t look at from a readers perspective. It’s not AT ALL like the books. The books are 🤌- absolutely amazing. A must-read in my opinion. That being said, one of my favorite tweets from around this time, is when someone put tabs on the book, where everything was changed, and tagged Rick Riordan. Rick Riordan replied with a photo of a bomb cloud and the caption “this shows all the changes that they did in the film”.
