Well in the books he was abusive. And he may be in this as well as Percy doesn’t realize until later in the book.

@@chadhiggins6884totally agree. At first Gabe is just a douche, but it’s what we see from him after Percy and Sally “go missing” that makes him horrible. And the reveal that gave us abusive comes at the end of the book, before that we have no reason to suspect that Gabe is abusive. And Sally Jackson is a woman who picked up a shotgun to battle the army of Kronos, you’re telling me she wouldn’t have fought back against Gabe even a little? Like I get not breaking up w him for his smell, but not even standing up a little bit? Since we don’t have Percy to tell us how Sally stands up to Gabe in her own way, I’m glad the TV show is showing us so we don’t think Sally is just some weak willed woman. There’s a reason Poseidon broke the oath for her.

​@@TheIndianDeityAh, is that true? I actually forgot the reveal about the abuse was at the end, I thought he saw her flinch at the beginning. If it was at the end (or if the show depicts that later) then I'll be fine with Gabes character. He was the only thing I havent enjoyed about the show so far but that was because I had it in my mind that they revealed that at the beginning.

@@grice478 obviously we see the books from Percy’s POV so we can see that he doesn’t like Percy a bit more in the books than the show, but the reveal at the end of the book is that Gabe only abuses Sally whenever Percy isn’t around. I was so confused when people complained about a change in Gabe’s character because we aren’t supposed to know him to be abusive yet, just that he is a douche. And honestly there are clues that Sally is being abused. Gabe controls Sally’s phone, he controls Sally’s use of the car, he takes credit for all of the work Sally has done despite the fact he doesn’t have a job, he doesn’t respect Percy at all, he’s yelling at Eddie so loud we can hear him from the outside. Sally has to go outside just to not argue with him, because the second they meet on screen they start yelling at each other. It already seems like an unhealthy relationship to me. You have to remember that most abusive relationships aren’t abusive all the time, sometimes everything seems ok. But then other times is when things go bad. There’s an unrealistic portrayal of abusive relationships in media that they are abusive all the time and the abuse has to be physical to be valid, which just isn’t the case. There are seeds planted, just wait to see what happens in the rest of the show before you write it off as a character change for Gabe. Now there is a slight change to Sally’s character, in that she stands up to Gabe, and people can think of that what they will, but personally I like that she stands up to Gabe a little bit, at least when Percy’s around. It shows you can be a normal person and still be abused, you don’t have to be quite and reserved to validate the fact that you are abused. It also feels like show Sally is wayyy more likely to pick up a shotgun to attack the army of Kronos than TLT Sally is.

i think thats because the wizarding world is completely separate from the muggle world in terms of civilization and culture. but with the pjo world, all of it is incorporated in existing reality. the only difference is only half bloods can see it and normal humans can't. so theres actually nothing "magical" about it technically to begin with. its just another hidden reality so to speak.

It's different type of magic tho, completely different vibe in the books too

Harry Potter has a feeling of escapism to it, sure it's set in the "real world" but there's an entire self-sustaining magical world that you get to escape into. You know if you're a witch or wizard you'd get to run away to Hogwarts and never have to learn Calculus or deal with Health Insurance. Percy Jackson, however, is still very grounded in the real world. Percy says it on page 1 of book 1, you DON'T want to be a half-blood. I love both book series very much, but that magical feeling that comes with stories like Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings or Narnia isn't there in Percy Jackson. On the flipside, however, kids with broken families will find themselves relating to, and healing from, the PJ books more often than the HP books.
