Hi Garden Friends! I hope you enjoyed this video. I specifically left out the name of the varieties I was showing as I only have experience with the specific varieties I'm growing, and can't speak to the growth or seeding habit of other types of clumping ornamental onion/perennial alliums. With that disclosure out of the way, In my zone 6 garden the varieties I have are Millenium, that bloom earlier in the season end of July through August, and the Lavender Bubbles which blooms Mid August through Early September. I found self seeding occuring under each of these varieties in my garden. Thank you, Steph

Thank you so much for this video. I was wondering how y'all had late blooming alliums, as I had only been growing the bulbs. Now I know what to look for and hope to add some of these late blooming varieties to my garden. I do have a herbaceous allium I didn't know I had= Garlic chives. They are blooming right now and invasive. I have them next to a walk way and thank goodness they have not jumped into my lawn. I planted them many years ago.

Hi Jo! Oh I'm glad that I cleared that up for you. I hope you can add some to your garden, some varieties include millenium, serendipity, summer beauty, and lavender bubbles. I'm sure there are more, but hopefully if you look one of these up, it will give you an idea in what to look for. Have a great weekend!

Gosh Steph. I just learned something important about MY own ALliums!! i THOUGHT it was grass weeds growing around them and now I know better. So glad you pointed them out to me. Looks like you may save me a bunch of $$$ on plants. I love ALL my alliums and they are welcome anywhere here in MY zone 6 garden.
@HookedandRooted11 ай бұрын
Hi Alice, and your not alone lol. I thought the same thing at first. That's why I thought I would share in case you either don't want them to spread, or want to move some somewhere else. I personally love them, but I do know some people like to stay on top of plants that might become problematic.

I'm wondering if allium need to go.thru a cold period to bloom. I'm noticing my millennium are not sprouting seed heads but making actual mini bulbs where the flower heads were. they have sprouts growing and I can see the bulb clump.forming. I was wondering if I put them inside in pots if they will flower next year when I plant them out. any thoughts on this? thank you for sharing your gardens

@HookedandRooted11 ай бұрын
Hi Tonya! I have a great recommendation for you, for fall planting spring blooming alliums, try the Christophii variety. They have HUGE blooms, a more open type bloom, and shorter sturdier stems. I bought some packs at Lowes, and want to add more this year. They are great!! Be sure to not plant them too deeply, about 4-6", and in a well draining spot so the bulbs don't rot. Hope this helps.

Are these alliums edible? If so, how do they taste?
@HookedandRooted5 ай бұрын
Hello, Even though alliums are part of the onion family, these are not edible. I would recommend growing chives which are an edible herb, and do get a small pom pom bloom in mid spring.
@yvonnecox999711 ай бұрын
Great video! I planted these here in Michigan for the first time this year. I also have the spring allium and they do the exact same thing. But I leave them and deal because I love the unique structure. Question, what mulch do you use, I really like the look of it.
@HookedandRooted11 ай бұрын
Hi Yvonne! Thank you. I use black mulch. Mostly I have it delivered, but sometimes I like the bags for the ease of them. The one pictured was bagged, the Scotts Earthgro mulch in Black. Purchased at Home Depot.

So these type of Alliums are not started from a bulb planted in the fall? Did you purchase the plant in the spring ? I absolutely want these in my flower beds!!
@HookedandRooted11 ай бұрын
That is correct, the bulb type you plant in fall bloom in spring. These are sold in clumps in a nursery pot and you usually find them selling in the nurseries mid summer. Some varieties you can buy include Millenium & Lavender Bubbles (I have both of these in my garden), Serendipity, Summer Beauty, and there are others. A great perennial for mid to late summer color 💜
@debbiepeloso601211 ай бұрын
Never grew this before. Silly question. These start as bulbs to plant now to bloom next spring?
@HookedandRooted11 ай бұрын
Hi Debbie, There are 2 kinds. There is alliums that you buy as bulbs in the Fall and plant them in Fall and they bloom in Spring. Then there is the variety I show in the video that are bought in clumps and blooms in Summer. Different varities bloom at different times. Some earlier, some mid, some late summer. I have Millenium that blooms earlier, and Lavender Bubbles that starts a little after Millenium. Hope this helps.
@debbiepeloso601211 ай бұрын
@@HookedandRooted thank you for taking the time to explain. I have never planted a bulb for some reason but thought maybe I'd give it a try. I was at a local garden center today and was surprised one or two bulbs for $9.99 or 5 for $25.99! We don't have a Lowes on the Cape and not impressed with Home Depot. I'll have to think about this! Thanks again.

so this is the seed variety allium vs bulb?
@HookedandRootedАй бұрын
This is a clumping perennial type allium variety. Vs the large bulbs that you plant in the fall. This clumping version drops seed in my garden, and I have found it spreading over time.
@SMElder-iy6fl11 ай бұрын
How do you know the plants are re-seeding? Might they be spreading by rhizomes?
@HookedandRooted11 ай бұрын
While the clumps do spread, I do know that they are also reseeding because of the habit of the seedlings I'm pulling up. The very young fine seedlings have no bulb/rhizome yet. It starts to develop a little bulblet as the foliage matures/thickens up.
