Ok, this is the rice hack I've needed. I'm 66 years old and have always struggled with gooey rice. Tried this last night and can hardly believe how wonderful it turned out! Now for a batch of my favorite black beans to go with it😁 Thanks for the video.

Yes! This is sooo much easier than the method of having to get the water to rice ratio perfect, cover, watch out for boiling over, etc. I don’t worry about too many nutrients being lost by draining the cooking water, since it’s whole grain, rather polished nutrient-stripped white rice. I love short, or medium, brown rice. It’s wonderfully chewy. I started cooking rice this way when I read that this method is the most effective for removing whatever arsenic might be present.

I always soak it overnight. On the next day I drain it and replace the water with fresh one for cooking (1 C of rice 1 C of water). It takes way less time to cook (10 min. and then switch off the burner and leave it 5-10 min. on the stove top).

Perfect recipe -- thanks so much! Tastes all the guess work out, even if you are just doing 2 cups of brown rice (where I add 6 cups water). I like to use filtered water and that is at a premium for me (using a Berkey), so I use all I need and no more. Six cups for 2 cups of rice was perfect, at least at my sea level (Austin, TX).

Thanks for this great lesson on rice. I have heard about cooking rice in a lot of water but didn't understand how it was done. My mom used to make rice this way, pasta style. I learned, in my macrobiotic days, to use a pressure cooker or the evaporation/absorption method. Now I still do that because it's so easy. 2 cups of rice, well washed. Cover with cold water to 1/2 inch above the rice. Cover. Bring to a boil. Turn down to a simmer and cook for 40 min. I just set a timer and walk away. I wonder how many, if any, nutrients are lost by straining the cooking water out of it. I like that your rice is separated and fluffy. Thanks for posting.

After cooking the rice and before the 10-minute steam, you could sauté the veggies and spices and then add in the drained rice, and then cover it and steam for the 10 minutes, maybe with a few tablespoons of water to assist the steam, unless the drained rice still has some cooking water in it to add to that.

@@kaylarodriguez2005 Yes, in a large pot of water just like you do with pasta and then strain. You can test it after 10 minutes. If you want it softer, boil a little longer, but it should be done within 15 minutes. So easy and turns out perfect every time. Huge time saver, too.

Thank you Dillon. I'm trying this with the same exact rice. I've actually tried this method, but didn't include the steaming time at the end so my rice turned out too wet. The 10mn steam must be key and this method is recommended for removing the most arsenic so that is great also. Do you use the same method for long grain brown like basmati or jasmine?
@WellYourWorld
@WellYourWorld 6 жыл бұрын
Glad you mentioned this. Yes the steam is important to dry out the rice. Use a tight fitting lid if possible and go as long as 20 minutes steam if you want. Yes I’ve used the same method for all brown (whole) rice and it should work that way for you. But you can always vary the boil time slightly until you find the texture you enjoy most.

Thank you for this video! I like to mix organic quinoa and brown basmati rice but I'll get this organic short grain brown rice from Costco and it'll probably last forever. Do you have a recipe for a quinoa-brown rice mixture, or is it better to cook them separately and then mix them? I would probably also add in a mixture of 2-3 lentils with spices to have a one-pot meal and cook the veggies separately.

Great video this is the best method for making brown rice just like pasta. Also is it possible to drink the rice water since its S.O.S. free or use it in a vegan dessert with dates and possibly make some rice pudding in the oven or use the rice water and oats in the vitamix to make rice oat milk. I just love how you use your veggie scraps to make veggie stock and now that I am going to make my brown rice this way instead of the evaporated way you gave me the idea of not wasting some of this rice water.
@WellYourWorld
@WellYourWorld 6 жыл бұрын
Dr. Greger says this is the best way to cook rice to remove any excess arsenic as rice is notorious for this. When I think of it that way, my inclination is to dump the water. But I agree totally with your logic on this; it makes sense to want to use this rich water, but I think pouring it out may technically be the best bet unfortunately.

Sweet thank you!! And thanks for the compliment. I’ve barely breached the surface. I can see they will be slow gains but so far very consistent gains. No plateau yet.

No prob. Do a quick KZfaq search for Dr. Greger’s explanation on arsenic and brown rice. It’s kind of a long story and he says it best. His channel is called nutrition facts dot org.
