What a clever technique! Most quilters know this, but some may not. That isn't regular wax paper or parchment. That's specifically freezer paper. It has a plastic coating that melts super thinly and temporarily adheres to fabric. At my store it wasn't with the kitchen rolls, it was in the bulk section because it's a big roll by Reynolds.

Use water soluble glue. It doesn’t bond too strongly
