Perfect for hiking or WHAT? 🤔 My experience.

Today it is all about the ALTRA OLYMPUS and my experience using them for hiking and in a comparison to the TIMPS. I will go through WHY i chose Olympus, what’s good and what’s not so good because the perfect shoe doesn’t exist...or does it?

Great review, what I hate is that as hikers we all embrace “leave no trace” etc but actually the damage we are causing environmentally by buying products with such a short shelf life is never spoken about. If we truly believe in leave no trace, we need to be a lot more aware of our impact as a whole and start putting pressure on these companies who are no doubt building in redundancy of their products so they can make more money! Sorry rant over. 😅

I truly do agree with you her, so true! In this case as a Hiker we don’t want any injuries off course but sure, we probably could put more pressure on, in this case Altra to improve ! The problem is probably price and to be competitive and if too expensive compared to cheaper alternatives they will loose business.

I am on my second pair going from Lone Peak to Olympus. I loved the Lone Peak but got sore feet when hiking 20+ kilometer days, the Olympus solved that completely. I agree on the short life, , but I just buy a new pair, then I use the original pair on daily walks and save the new pair for proper hikes.

Glad to hear you agree and love them to 🙂👍🏻 great shoes but it would be fun trying the new Topos everyone is talking about. Have to find a store to try them out at least, people say they last for much longer 🤷🏼‍♂️ but if less comfortable, easy choice…stay with the Olympus 🙂

I use the Olympus for my thrus and get about 500 miles out of them depending on conditions. Ii have a pair of 5 but the laces are bizarrely really short and unable to tie a bow so use a plastic lace fastener.

500 miles seems good and what I expect from my shoes as well if looking at them after 200 km…I don’t usually wear down my shoes that quick so a bit longer life me compared to many others. Strange they have such short laces in the 5s 🤔…easy to change off course but anyways!! Irritating!!

Thanks for this review! I never had the Olympus 4 so can’t compare, but recently bought a second pair of Olympus 5 because it’s my all time favorite hiking shoe . Wonder how you like them compared to the 4 👍🏼

Altra Lone peak var min favorit, men sen jag hittade ett par orange olympus 5 till bra pris ( ingen ville väl ha den färgen) så är de mitt första hands val, å med stigande ålder, så är den extra dämpningen i dessa skor, något som fötter, knän och rygg är tacksamma över.

Kan bara hålla med och perfekt ju att hitta en färg till rabatterat pris 👍🏻 orange eller grå…i skogen är det ingen som bryr sig 😄

Hmm, it's interesting why to prefer Olympus instead of Altra Lone Peak which are probably most popular model in Altra family or Hoka speed goat if good cushioning is required?

I tried the Lone Peaks in the store but they felt really awkward so bought the Timps instead…and now the Olympus. I know the lone peaks are popular but don’t seem to fit my feet very well 🤷🏼‍♂️ and like the added cushioning! Also tried the Hokas but the Olympus, in my opinion is much more stable. But also have a friend that loves his, so I guess it comes down to personal preference and what type of feet you have.

I'm guessing the extra grip of the soles is as much because the rubber is softer hence wears out quicker. Compromises....

Well, hmm 🤔 I would say no because the maxtrac sole is just as soft if not softer….think it’s more about the rubber blend that makes the Vibram sole that good and grippy.

I see some KZfaq hikers have moved from the altras to hoka speedgoats, have you ever thought about trying out hoka trail shoes.

Hi Jon 👋🏻 and yea, I have tried them out in store but I don’t think they fit my feet very well so I have not bought a pair to try, yet. Maybe I will give it a shot when my Olympus are worn out. Have a friend that loves his Hokas so, maybe…we’ll see.

Hello Robert. Can you provide advice about which size trail shoe to buy vis-a-vis normal shoe size. For example, would I simply order the same size as my regular shoe size or, say, a half size bigger.

Hi Emma 👋🏻 and yes, absolutely can say go minimum half a size to a full size up to regular sneakers or running shoes. It can feel a bit strange at first but you will appreciate the extra room and space for your toes. I have a full size up in my Olympus BUT…also due to this started buying bigger shoes that I wear in everyday life so now actually only a half size up again 🤷🏼‍♂️😂

@@roberthammenrudh thank you Robert. And do you wear double socks - a thin liner and thicker outer (or in your case) if you wear the socks with toes, do you wear an outer?

@@Curlew-Corner no I just wear the thin Run toe sock from Injinji…nothing more. They are super comfy and quick drying compared to wool… but smelly!! 😄

You mean the “start” and separation between parts in the vid or otherwise? Don’t have much “noises” left in the vids now I think 🤔 so to have this small 2s separations is annoying ? Hmm, ok. I see what I can do different…thanks for giving me your honest opinion! 🙏🏻
