Took my son Reef out last week to show him what its all about, we were greeted with glamour conditions and we found something I'd never experienced in our home waters!
It wasn't really a dedicated filming trip as we were more just exploring and looking for spots but I did get some cool stuff worth sharing...
Since then its been windy and raining with over a meter of rain up in the valley west of Mackay, so I've done a full offshore tackle rundown with all my new setups and a few new products ill be using this year..
I know its not the usual action packed video but I feel there's a lot of information to help people understand what to look for with quality offshore tackle.
Enjoy!

Thanks mate, happy to pass on my knowledge!! He’d been begging me for “take ya kid to work day” all holidays and he thought I was going to take him to a tackle store… I just wish the fishing was better for him to experience, he’s been out a bit when it’s been good but not old enough to enjoy it and always with his brother, so it was pretty exciting to have all the attention. And he’s stoked he got to be in a KZfaq video 😅😂

Hell you had some rain up there and looking at the forecast a good bit more to come. What a day on the water, Dollies are awesome, bit of foil on a hook they’ll grab it readily when in big numbers on the Fads and any thing that attracts the beginning of the food chain. Especially when you can get past the rats down to the Bulls, one of my favourite fish to eat too and make awesome ceviche or sashimi! Good seeing the young fella soaking it all up with you Mick, big shoes to fill, but he’ll fill those no doubt with your shared knowledge! Cheers for the rundown on the gear also, always great to see what others successfully use. Watching this is giving me itchy feet and Lures, Rods, Reels and the trusty BKK’s all scattered everywhere upgrading Trebs n Splits on everything, ready for the Black Bass and also chasing the big Black GT’s of the Bismarck Sea, and been told exploring New Rivers no Lure has touched the water! Giddy up! Lucky spending a couple of weeks on Tinaroo and fish my way back down the Coast for a couple more weeks to keep me sane! As always Mick, great stuff! 🍻

Haha yeah proper rain like we used to get in the 90s too!! Totally didn’t expect to find them dollys, I turned around thinking there could be a triple tail but then saw the blue and yellow and was gobsmacked! I’ve never seen or heard of em in that close off Mackay and of course I didn’t have anything to chase them properly with.. Reef loves it, he’s been asking me the whole school holidays to do a “take a kid to work day” I told him we were going out in the dark and he was excited! I wished I filmed it when we had a bunch of dolphins jumping at the nose of the boat so I threw threw him up there and did a few laps with them.. it was a pretty cool experience for him! Who are you fishing PNG with? I’m itching to get back over there, but I didn’t get vaxed and PNG won’t let me in yet…

@@Micksgonefishing mate, it’s things like that Reef will share that memory forever, I did the same in the Lake here. We also used to do a channel drift, snorkeling when the tide coming in is almost to a dead stop on the surface. My 3 loved it, and whoever saw a greenback turtle hiding, I’d dive down, grab it and whoever spotted it held onto its shell and went for a ride, deadset, I thought one of them was getting a bit too deep and took chase, luckily she let go and got to the surface puffin like a steam train! Good times and super memories! Grounds you hey and let’s you see life through their eyes in those moments. As for PNG, I’m going with Outside Edge Adventures, Nathan Reardon’s golden egg, going on a Liveaboard which is pure luxury. Froffin to get there, I reckon I’ve watched you PNG Trip like a 1000 times, Angling Adventures, The Wells Brothers Trip and Bone Lim also. I was looking at Lake Murray and would like to do that next year. But what grabbed me was a bit of both, Black Bass n Barra in the Rivers, some we are exploring for first time and haven’t ever seen a Lure. And secondly, the opportunity to fish the reef structures and bombies for Big Black GTs, Jumbo Doggies (🥵) and whatever else shows it’s strength! Hell you guys have copped some rain, didn’t realise it had flooded to that extent, hope you guys aren’t in the firing line of any of it mate? Do you have a webpage to shoot you an email or how to contact you Mick, I don’t do FB or Insta,

Is there any particular reason you use the Ocea jigger 1500HG and not the PG?
@Micksgonefishing
@Micksgonefishing Жыл бұрын
@@alaadinhamawi definitely is mate, the whole concept of slow pitch, especially the half pitch technique I use a lot, is that it’s like a walk the dog action at depth. To achieve this without being able to watch the lure work it needs close to 80cm per handle turn at the depth you choose to fish. The Pg would be slower and you’d lose that mechanical action which would then make each pitch require roughly a 3/4 handle turn to maintain the walking action which isn’t easy to do and would require the angler to fish by feel and not let the reel do that hard work. It is possible to slow pitch with a PG but why make things hard for yourself…

@@Micksgonefishing Ok now I understand. I’ve been fishing all my life and but never offshore so that’s the reason I asked. I’m getting into to offshore stuff now and I’m trying to figure out my first jigging setup. Hey Mick, Love the chanel! I was wondering when do you use the slow blat R vs the S?
@Micksgonefishing
@Micksgonefishing Жыл бұрын
Hey mate, I generally run the S when there’s a bit more run on the bigger tides or if I’m fishing really up and down country as it has a tighter action both on the fall and the lift.. I like the R on flatter ground and where the fish are more spread out because of its wider flutter, it covers ground on the drop and you’re rarely working the same ground on the lift. And then there’s the profile difference which is also a major factor and can see me break them rules and still be successful. But yeah generally bigger tides I’ll run the S and smaller tides the R…

Tying to the solid ring is the strongest connection possible, why have a split ring in the mix when it’s a known weak point. The split ring should only be used to swing the jig and makes it easy to change lures..
