PERI ANAL ABSCESS:
1. What is a perianal abscess?
Peri anal abscess is infection and pus formation around the anal region.
2. Why and how does this form?
Peri anal abscess ( pus formation) happens due to Infection of the anal glands surrounding the anal canal. The glands reside between the anal sphincters ( two rings of muscle surrounding the anal canal and helping to maintain the tone and continence of the anal canal). The glands open into the anal canal.Infection of the anal glands leads to pus formation and this is called as peri anal abscess.
3. what are the symptoms?
Pain in the anal region
Swelling in the anal region
The abscess may burst open and start discharging pus
Fever
Abdominal pain, if the pus bursts open into the abdomen
Blakish discoloration due to gangrene in extreme cases,
Sepsis, hypotension and organ failure in extreme cases

Recovered. No surgery no meds. I was shocked; but this simple accident cured my dog's perianal fistula completely GONE.

Thanks for explaining clearly. I had gone through surgery 2 weeks ago, still the wound pains. I hope it heals soon. What precautions one can take so that it doesn’t get into recurrence of abscess or fistula formation after drainage?

To prevent recurrence, 1) go for regular follow up 2) irrigate the wound and keep it clean 3) take appropriate duration of antibiotics as advised your surgeon

Mine never came back, although they told me it would. I believe what had caused it was because I work outdoors in the heat, but in a seated position. The sweat was building up and possibly a clogged sweat gland (plus bacteria, from the area) caused a HUGE problem. Had to have emergency removal, but what I did based on my sweat theory was this: cotton undies, especially in summer. If sweating a lot and get bacteria, wash the area. I bought a special Summers Eve brand antibacterial groin wash. I use it religiously and wash very well in that area because I want to keep bacteria down on sweaty days. Then, I got a mild (uncented) antiperspirant *made for groin/behind areas* that I use only in summer on sweaty days. About 5 years later, I had started getting lax about my sweat schedule (perhaps too comfortable). Now, I've developed one on the front instead of the back. A gland got clogged in my Bartholins gland. Again, it happened when I was working and sweating in a seated position in 100° temperatures. I personally believe that has something to do with it for me. What I believe contributed to it this time was I had got new undies about a month ago (NOT cotton!!). They cause me to sweat more. Now I will never forget to use cotton in the summer when I have to sit for long periods. Anyway, mainly, keep sweat from happening and keep bacteria (from sweat) down. Some people will get them no matter what, but that helped me.

What would you tell the do it yourself? I had one 6 years ago and it burst on its own. Have one again right now, why wouldn't I just burst it on my own with an incision? I don't want to drop $30,000 on surgery.

I don't suggest you to do it that way. It bursts now only to burst again.it can tract inside and high up making further treatment difficult as it's not simple to treat a complex fistula .

Doctor ,your explanation and clarity on the topic is admiring. Ihave under gone peri anal absence horse show infection surgergy on 29.01.24. Its getting healing. I am afraid it may reoccur. Kindly advice how to avoid it. My father has fistula. Is it hereditary. I did some yoga asanas related to stomach. Since then i got this issue. Does yoga increase the chances of perennial abcessa problem. I was doing yoga of rotating stomach.

Hi sir, I would like to ask this question.3 days ago I went to the doctor.And was diagnosed perianal surface abscess.The doctor prescribed me 6 antibiotics for 3 days.Sometimes i am having temperature and sharp pain.Tomorrow i will go to the doctor again.do you think that it can be healed without surgery, because it is not shown any wound on surface.Thanks

Abscess has to be drained surgically, else it may open on its won , someties it gets complicated Only in initial stages when there is indfection and no ous formation may respond to antibiotics.

Is it sure that even after the surgery ( incision and drainage) it will recurr again as fistula after some time ? please reply sir 🙏🏻

Yes, it can recur, abscess and fistula can recur, but not everyone will get recurrences after surgery, but the chance of recurrence is definition there, many factors determine that

Hello doctor, I had a perinatal abscess surgery 7 days back and now I can sit and walk, but the pain is still there. It’s not that much, but after every bowel movement there is too much pain which lasts for 5-6 hours. Also, I have noticed a small whitish red kind of bump on the other side where the surgery was done, and when I touch it, it pains. I don’t have any fever now, and my dose of antibiotics are also completed. The wound is healing too, all I am scared is, is there a new abscess on the other side? Thankyou!

@@ag3027 things are good the wound is healing but I today when I was having bowel movement, I experienced bleeding from inside my rectum and also I had constipation even though I have been taking laxatives and having a good diet full of fibre. I don’t understand what to do now.

Is it from shaving there and ingrown hairs? 3rd one in 2 years same spot ..1st one burst on its own and I drained it and peroxide soak.. was good for 6 months.. another extreme pain swelling I laced and drained it after long hot salt bath.. iwith exacto knife..knife and peroxide soak .... 3rd same but with a proxide wet hot pack and borax ...this one was puss mixed with blood.. and excruciating till I burst it and squeezed drained the chanelling. Then ore peroxide with borax wipees till draining stops..and lots of virus killing sray.. so much better I think it's from shaving.. man these are so painful

Generally, a peri anal abscess needs to be drained by surgery unless they are very small when they may respond to antibiotics.

Thankyou for the clear explanation sir. I’m in Japan, my surgery was done 10days ago. Dr took scan again abscess become small, but still abscess is there even after surgery..now Wound also closed..I couldn’t able to ask questions due to language issues..does it cause any issues if left untreated? Do I need to take treatment in india? Does it cause anything complication near future? What should I do now sir? Can you pls help me on this.

hi, if the wound has healed well but still you are having pain, in that case there may be a resudual abscess, this is better assessed by clinical examination by the surgeon and a scan like an MRI or Trans anal ultrassound would be helpful. i would sugest you to go and consult your surgeon asap, if you happen to come to india then you can see a GI surgeon in oyur place.
