Everything you have ever wanted or needed to know about how to clean menstrual cups. This video covers it all: daily cleaning and washing, can you use a bidet to clean menstrual cups, logistics for cleaning a menstrual cup in public bathrooms, sanitizing cups, the best menstrual cup washes, even an incredible before/after of removing menstrual cup (in this case, menstrual disc) stains.
Since this is such a long video you can skip ahead using the chapters function to the topic you need answers to. I do definitely recommend watching the time-lapse of a peroxide menstrual cup (disc) soak because it's so satisfying! I realized after uploading that the time-lapse timecode is not correct and it is sourcing some other data. It was about 4 hours, 20 minutes in total. Sorry for the time confusion! Full blog post with more images and information linked below. I also want to thank everyone for their support of my new menstrual cup store, Period.Shop! When you shop with my small business you're supporting these time consuming (free) video resources and guides. Let me know what other topics you'd like me to cover :)

I saw a really good tip for cleaning cups/discs in public. You can take one of the collapsible sterilizer cups with you, and fill it with warm water and take with you into the stall. Put the cup in the container and close the lid tight, shake it well to clean it off. Pour the dirty water out in the toilet and reinsert the cup/disc. The container collapses, so it's easy to keep in your pocket or purse as well.

Or you can do the exact same thing using a collapsible cup but instead of warm water, use hydrogen peroxide 3%. That will remove staining as well. Then just rinse it well or use wet wipes that are safe for your body.

DO NOT PEROXIDE SOAK YOUR DIVA CUP. I did the peroxide soak on my Diva cup and it did remove all the stains BUT it turn the silicon a little bit chalky. It has this slight white powder on it. When I googled it, the diva cup website warns not to put peroxide on the cup because it can damage the cup and recommend to replace the cup if the silicon does become chalky. I guess it's time for a new cup. I'm a little bit sad to see it go after 3 years, but I'm excited to try out a different brand.

Everyone in my house has sensitive or eczema prone skin so I don't buy scented products. When I spent the night at my cousins house I washed my disc on auto pilot and ended up using a super scented soap 🤦🏻‍♀️ I tried rewashing it with an unscented soap but the scent was still on the disc. Since I had no other option I reinserted it and ended up with a nasty smelling disc afterwards. The only thing that got rid of the smell was a peroxide soak. My disc is as good as new again!

The only thing I have found that works for me is a 50/50 Peroxide and distilled water soak overnight in between cycles and a 50/50 mix in a mini UV safe spray bottle to clean while it's in use in place of soap. I can't even use soaps and personally, I have also had infections return while boiling in between cycles over the years. So far so good with Peroxide diluted alone for me! My disc is odor free, stain free, infections have ceased to happen, and my disc in general has stayed much cleaner with no damage or deterioration.

So these videos and websites and all the knowledge you and your crew provide for us....is remarkable! I'm actually stopping my birth control and about to regulate my body again...for the first time in over a decade. I'm seriously considering a cup but more so a disc. I'm wondering if a disposable disc would be best to start out with or just buy a disc and be done with it..I'm sure I'll end up buying more over time. Thank you for all that you do!

I live in a multi-generational household and they're _not_ chill about menstration. To clean my cup I set the kettle to boil in the kitchen, drop my cup in a glass jar that I hide in the shower nearby, and just casually dump the boiling water in the jar. If anyone asks why I'm (carefully) carrying a boiling kettle into the bathroom, I just tell them I'm cleaning the drain. I'll typically do this after I've 'claimed' the shower so no one walks in.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!! I just bought my first menstrual disc, but the instructions on the package are very general and they make it sound like I should wash it with soap and boil it after I've emptied the blood every time, which means every 12 hours I would have to do the whole process, but the thing is that the instructions are very general! But now I feel more confident about using it and the storage because the package I bought comes with a little silicon case, but from what I heard it is better to use the fabric pouch that also came with my package. Again, thank you for all this info.

So I prefer having multiple cups clean at the same time so that if im far away from the sink i can just put in a clean one at once and don't have to worry about bleeding all over the floor while washing (I've got really heavy periods). I also wash my cups with medical grade "grønnsåpe"( this is an Norwegian sope, with pine sent. It contains fat and potassium hydroxide). The medical grade one is also used for wound care in in that region. Example: after birth if you got tears, they would ask you to mix a tub of that soap and water and stick your vagina invther for 30 min. I hav chosen this sope since it is recommended for use around your vagina if you absolutely need soap down there, and because you have to import cup safe washes to Norway. You can't just get that from a store, but you can get the "grønnsåpe" at the farmacy.

On the odor - When I got mine 11 years ago, I also always rinsed it with warm water.. turns out that's really bad for the protein in the blood which then led to an odor. So whilst I'm using it, I'm always just rinsing it with COLD water (I'm lucky to have the same toilet/sink situation like you) and when I'm done I clean it with tabs which are sold for dentures. So my cup always has a light peppermind scent to it :D. Have been doing that for 11 years and I'm still using my first cup :).

I'm attending my first music festival in August and it's a multi day camp out. No indoor plumbing available, just porta potties and I believe they may be bringing in shower trucks. I'm expecting to get my period literally on day one of the festival and I've never used anything but pads and tampons so I'm pretty anxious about managing this. Thinking I'll use my one and only other period I'll have beforehand to test out using a disc (I also have an IUD so I'm leery about the cup). How would you navigate this in this scenario? Since porta potties are super dirty, dark, and cramped, with no sink available. Help 😅

What kind of disc is that clear one? I am having trouble finding the correct menstrual cup. Having trouble finding one that is not too firm but not so soft it is difficult to open. Sometimes the firmer cups feel like they obstruct my urine stream..a couple times after a period I've ended up with a UTI. I boil 10 min before use and the steamer between and change out cause I have so many cups now. Advice?

Is it okay to use alcohol wipes lie in first aid to sanitise a cup? I had the lunette cup wipes and they seemed to have a lot of alcohol in. I wondered if I could just use alcohol wipes instead?

I share a toilet with the other people on the same floor of my building and there is no sink at all (I have my own sink inside my apartment) so I just deal with the whole disc situation in my shower

DivaCup does not recommend using H2O2 nor Vinegar. Is this still the case? Or is it safe to use H2O2 for stain removal?

Peroxide is a natural color safe bleach.... just don't use it undiluted or leave it on color clothing too long... also test. But it will remove blood from clothing and sheets very easily.

Is it ok if you put your cup in a open lunch box and put it in a mikroway or do you need the collapsible cup sterilizers?

Hello there , I have a question. When I'm in my final days of my period (4th or 5th) when I menstruate little to no blood, is it still worth using a cup? It feels like blood is thick and stuck to the walls so I thought going through the struggle of using a cup , I just use a panty liner to avoid any final stains on my panty. What would you recommend?

Knix is the more comfortable brand in my opinion after trying them both. Thinx has more blood protection.

Maybe a softer cup can help with leaks. Also you can check and see if you have a silicone allergy

I don't like the nasty body fluid factor but I think some sterile gloves are gonna make a big difference in cleanliness for me.
