Dr Dray you saved my skin! I had been attempting to soothe my perioral dermatitis with a natural plant-based cleanser and steroid cream for about 8 months after a doctor misdiagnosed the rash. I decided to see another doctor once it started to get really bad and they told me I had perioral dermatitis but didn’t tell me how to treat it and she even told me I should wear makeup to cover it up. After seeing this video while searching for how to soothe a bad flare up I started washing my face with just water for a few days and obsessively watched your channel. A few days later after watching a lot of your product review videos I decided to go buy the Cerave foaming cleanser and the Cerave moisturizing cream that comes in the tub. I washed my face with just water in the morning and then applied the moisturizer to wet skin (THAT TIP CHANGED MY LIFE) and then cleansed at night and applied moisturizer again. After doing just that for a month my perioral dermatitis has cleared up 100%. I’m so thankful I found this video and your channel. I watch your videos every day now and love hearing your opinions on products. And thank you for educating people on the dangers of natural skin care products! I would probably still be using essential oils on my face if it weren’t for you.

Thank you so much for not only creating this video but for also bringing up the mental health aspect associated with this condition. I first had this condition back when I started high school and missed my exams because at the time my doctor had never seen it before and I had to wait before I could see a dermatologist. My dermatologist recommended an antibiotic topical cream like you mentioned along with a solution that is used as a wet dressing. It’s the only thing that works. Struggling with that in my teens and now that I’m over 30 and still have flare ups, it still takes a toll on my self-esteem. The information you provided was straight forward and compassionate, I almost cried. 15 or so years ago at the doctors office wasn’t like that. Thank you 🙏🏽

@@SparkingLife111 thankfully I did. I used Eubos ectoin7% and Avène Cicalfate Crème Réparatrice and an Niacin essence (mine was Purito Galacto Niacin 97). I washed my face only at night with a gentle soap, no rubbing, a gentle toner next (mine was also Purito) and then applied the essence and the two creams afterwards (Eubos first and the Avène). Absolutely nothing else went on my face no makeup no sunscreen no nothing and obviously no hands and hair anywhere near my face. It took about 4 weeks until completely disappeared and since then with those two creams that I daily use it never came back. Hope it helps.

I had this condition for over a year. When I started using a Tacromilus cream it got worse and it spread to the area around my eyes. So I was red around both my mouth, on my chin and around my eyes and I seriously looked like a burn victim, that's how bad it got. Was not only ugly but painful too. I then treated it with antibiotics (Tetracycline) for six months (!) but only 40-50 % of it got away. I then treated it with Elidel cream for two months and it went slowly away. My PD is now gone I think, but my skin is still sensitive and get redish easily where the PD was located. I take better care of my skin now using organic natural skin care for sensitive skin with PD and cold pressed organic oils instead of all the chemicals that probably caused this long lasting and horrible condition! Do NOT use a lot of products and strong ones when you have this condition! Do not use a lot of active products at all, I think that's what caused mine. I used to try a lot of different serums and creams and face masks etc for a long time and I'm 100 % sure that's what caused this.

Dr. Dray, thank you very much for the great videos! You are so knowledgeable and have been fantastic! I had horrendous perioral dermatitis for a few years. I discovered that part of the problem was that I was very allergic to both sodium lauryl and laureth sulfates (in so many soaps & shampoos) and also super allergic to the flouride and the SLS in regular toothpaste. So I had to stop using these chemicals. In addition I found that I was using too much laundry detergent and and that it was staying on my towels and staying on my face after I used them (sulfates yet again). I did a course of antibiotics for a few months but they eventually gave me symptoms of liver failure and I eventually stopped them after two or three months. In the end, I felt the elimination of my use of products with these chemicals, in conjunction with the antibiotics was what finally helped me to have a decent recovery. I also found using metrogel and neosporine for expecially bad flare ups helped. I just wanted to mention my experience in case it might help anyone else reading this or if you encounter a patient like me. I think I have chemical sensitivity syndrome because both I and a lot of members of my family are very allergic to harsh chemicals. Just hoping others experiencing perioral dermatitis may want to stop and take a good hard look at anything harsh in their environment that they might be reacting to. Wholefoods carries many sulfate free options for soaps, shampoos and toothpastes. Also flouride free toothpaste. Livesavers. Jason brand aloe body wash is good.

I'm so glad you made this video. I was diagnosed with this today by a Dermatologist. He gave me Elidel and metronidazole to use topically and Bactrim DS orally for the cysts that were on my chin. He said he wasn't sure what the cysts were from. I've been on metrogel in the past for itching and burning so hopefully it clears up 100% this time and doesn't rebound! This video will help me manage this until then, thank you so much!!!! I wish there was more information on this condition so those who are prone to it can prevent it from happening, I feel like the corners of my nose and even beneath it and chin have always been red and inflamed since I was a teenager.

I don't fall into any of the categories.. except high SPF sunblock and using foundation. But I only have flare-ups when I'm under a LOT of stress.. What i use to aliviate symptoms are: - Applying ACV (1 Tbps per cup) followed by - organic aloe vera gel, followed by - An ointment containing dexpanthenol (usually used to heal tattoos) or Abreva (easily found). To treat, I use: - Prosacea (ointment to treat rosacea) - zinc tablets - sulfur tablets - vitamin A and The first time I had PD, it was a struggle to get rid of it... It took me months! But now I figured out what to do. But what I really need is to try staying away from stressful situations.

This video really helped me :) I’d had what I thought was “hormonal acne” over my chin for the last 5 months, then finally went to my doctor when my skin was constantly burning and felt really tight; immediately she knew what it was. I’m still yet to find out what brought on my outbreak but at least now I know what it looks like :)

I've had what I thought was acne around my chin area. Recently, I noticed small red bumps around my eyes... again I thought was little pimples. After seeing this video I believe it may be POD. I have been sans makeup for about a month minus a few days for the 3 weddings I have attended and meeting with new clientele. I have found a little relief around the mouth but my eyes are still a problem. I am glad to have found this video as I use a nasal spray and have used my inhaler this past month. I'm hoping discontinuing use of these meds as well as my face cream with an spf of 30 I will see some more improvement. This condition is certainly stubborn!!

Was just diagnosed with this today.i have been dealing with these symtoms for 3 months seeing a dermatologist in June who felt she didn't know the right medications. Today seen chief of dermotology, he was very nice . Looked at my face , talked to me. And gave me the diagnosis of the dermatitis.All the symtoms you spoke about. Prescribed me an oral antibiotic and a prescribed face cream. No cleansers . No makeup at all .I'm really hoping I get some relief and I'm definitely feeling depressed, I haven't done anything this summer at all..he said it will take months but says he's really going to help me. I pray so..thankyou Dr....it's gonna feel so wierd not washing my face at all with cleanser or moisturizer..;, just water. Been using CeraVe last month trying to get it better ,told by first dermo. Now this Dr told me only water, how does your face seem clean. Thankyou for listening. Been watching you last couple months. You're so knowledgeable .

Thank you so much for this! I suffered from terrible periorifacial dermatitis for years. It started when I was prescribed Elocon for rosacea, and following that, every other piece of medical advice was wrong, too - including use of occlusives, etc. Ended up eventually finding a knowledgeable dermatologist who prescribed antibiotics and an immunosuppressant cream (Elidel) for six months and I haven’t had any flare ups for over a year!

Hypothetical question: how would one go to work without any foundation when the face is extremely distracting and people are staring and asking questions about what is wrong with you? Linda Bilsbury I totally get it! In an ideal world we wouldn't conceal as it may exacerbate the condition. Nonetheless we live in the real world and it's tough! Dr Sam Bunting (a dermatologist based in the UK) has always recommended the Nars tinted moisturisers. It's not a solution to the Perioral Dermatitis, but at least it's not as "heavy" as other foundations etc. And at least you can feel human again. Failing that, book a vacation for several weeks and go barefaced! Go girl! You can do it!

I just wanted to share my journey so far. I'm 24 years old and i've had acne for 10 years. When i was 19 i developed really bad cystic acne, i was put on oral antibiotics, but they did not help at all so i ended up on accutane and oral contraceptives. Accutane cleared up my skin quite well and oral contraceptives kept it at a managable state for 4 years, until i developed really bad migranes and eventually had to stop taking the pill. I really feared the return of my acne and my skin really did get worse... the the type of acne was completely different. I tried to treat it on my own but thankfully went to the dermatologist after. She diagnosed me with perioral dermatitis with signs of acne and put me on oral antibiotics and antibiotic topicals and azelaic acid cream. I've been taking those antibiotics for a month now.... and developed really bad rashes on my fingers and in my bikini area. I fixed my face, but other parts of my body got sooo inflamed and itchy. So no, my journey is not over, i'm waiting for the response from my dermatologist on what to do now. Skin seems to be a never ending problem for me and it really brings me down almost every day. So if you're struggling, i get it... it really takes a toll on ones mental health and confidence. I'm trying to stay positive but it really seems like i've been cursed with every skin condition under the sun 🤷‍♀️ Good luck to everyone!

Thank you so much for acknowledging the emotional impact of having a rash like this right by your mouth where people look at you. My acne was clearing up from adapalene, and then this happened to me around my mouth and eyes. I think from stress or maybe a new physical sunscreen I tried. I was so upset because it looks so much like acne. I am now taking minocycline and it’s cleared up a little bit already. I was kind of annoyed because the doctors and pharmacists always forget to remind me that antibiotics make my oral contraceptives less effective. My cousin has a child because his girlfriend was taking doxycycline and didn’t know that she needed to use a back up method. We need to do a better job discussing drug interactions and side effects.

I’m dealing with this right now and have dealt with it for the majority of my life. When I was young my doctor told me it was herpes but I always thought it was wrong. I have self diagnosed. I use cream for yeast infections on it and it helps so much to sooth the itch and burn, also to dry it out. Once it’s dry I use dermalogica hydrating lotion to rehydrate after scrubbing the dead dry skin off.

Thanks for skin care recommendations, all of my dermatologists said that I should use nothing...like absolutely nothing on my face, and it's official position in our country I guess, but how I suppose to wash my face...and sunscreen. And of course how should I fight the black heads. So, it's like I should use only medications on my face that dries up my skin so bad and I can't put on moisturizer. My skin feels ok now, but not perfect. I start using Missha Near skin pH balancing cleansing oil, it's really interesting product, and Etude House Soon Jun toner is great on my skin. What do you think about peeling gels like secret key lemon sparkling peeling gel(there are a lot of gels like this in Korean brands, just for example), it's gentle or not, can it helps (my doctor said that if you have PD so your skin have problems with exfoliating (but don't use anything)😵🤷 maybe that's a great idea for new video about peeling gels, or I should see all of your videos first😊 thanks allot for your channel 💖sorry for English mistakes

Thanks, super helpful! I'm now doing zero products in combination with erytromycine to help with the POD. The antibiotics seemed to make it a bit worse at first, but lets see. What has been shocking to me in the process is the incompetence of pharmacists, who have suggested cortison, vaseline and saying that wearing make up is absolutely no problem. I read on a lot of German sites, that black tea compressions (cold) can help reduce symptoms such as itching, burning and the dryness. So far it seems to work and i haven't noticed anything negative from it.

Hi Dr. Dray! Thank you for the excellent tips about POD. I've been battling this condition for 4 years now, and I have seen 3 different dermas and they all prescribed steroid creams :((. Anyways, i would just like to ask because from what ive read and watched, including this video of yours, it is always mentioned that POD spares the vermillion border of the lips. However in my case, the blisters sit literally on my lips and the vermillion border. So I would like to ask if this is a common case of POD, or is it POD at all? Thank you!

Hi Doctor - I need your help! Firstly thank you so much for taking your time out of your day to thoroughly explain something not many people understand including myself. I am a 26 yr Male, and have been diagnosed with this problem by my doctor today. However when I’ve read up about this problem it never says ‘white heads’. And though I have a sudden sore red rash which moved from my nose and spread to more my lower cheek/upper mouth. The spots present have white heads on them. It’s extremely itchy, sore and very oily. It constantly feels like heated irritation. I’ve been given lymecycline, 48day medication, but I feel like this could be more fungal/folliculitis with it being so itchy and white heads (though I’ve just been reading up on it and very new to it all) I wonder if you could help me in the right direction. Thank you so much in advance!

Just wanted to say that I really appreciate the in depth info and also your kind and suppotive words at the end. I have very 'robust' skin nowadays...but I suffered from bad teenage acne way back when...and your skin 'turning on you' really is traumatising...even without being octracised. I still remember my 10th grade school trip...I was using an ointment that was always freshly prepared for me at the pharmacy and needed to be kept in the refrigerator. So I put it in the communal one in our accommodation....and some of my male classmates decided to 'improve the formula'. I'll spare you the details, but teenage boys being teenage boys you can probably guess. (go ahead and laugh, I did, too, remembering it) And of course I couldn't even talk about it to anyone...way too embarrassing! It's not like I had even kissed a boy at that point, what with my face the mess it was. Without their taunting I wouldn't even have known what the stuff was...I guessed spit at first. Ah...fun times! I wish the internet and online support options had been around back then!

@DrDray How is using VaniCream lite with its #2 ingredient being petrolatum helpful if you say to avoid petroleum jelly? Do the other ingredients in VaniCream circumvent the petrolatum in VaniCream?
@kellyxmichelle25
@kellyxmichelle25 4 жыл бұрын
Sabrina Serrano I know I’m not her, but yeah. Products that have petroleum in them, are much different. The petroleum is only formulated to help lock in the rest of the ingredients in the moisturizer as the “occlusive” ingredient. Which almost all moisturizers have one. But it’s more so a problem when you’re using ONLY an occlusive because it doesn’t sink into the skin it just sits very heavy on top of it

Sree Bhattacharya I’m not sure exactly what you mean. But your lips, are totally fine to use Vaseline on. It’s a completely different kind of skin that isn’t going to get clogged up from it. Try Vanicream Ointment - it used to be called Vaniply, but the most recent ones I bought are now called Vanicream again. It does not contain petrolatum, but does contain dimethicone. Not sure if that is also an occlusive, but it is lighter than aquaphor or Vaseline, and keeps lips moisturized. I also use it around my eyes and on my face.

Been treating it with dermatologist recommendation for the past 3 years as well but I hope with your recommendations, I can finally see it go away for good. Just 2 questions- i use Vaseline on my lips often as it gets dry, this was also the product i was using constantly before I first developed the condition. So what should I use instead on a regular basis on dry lips? And is Cerave hydrating cleanser or the Cetaphil gentle cleanser okay to use on my face? Please respond-this condition had definitely affected my self esteem and it surely doesn't help when colleagues and friends point this out in public :(

I got this 2 months ago. I had a cold and was using CeraVe Healing Ointment under my nose because the skin was so raw. I’ve never in my life used steroids, and never had any skin condition other than acne from 18-22yrs (I’m now 35). I’ve been not putting anything on the inflamed area at all - just a mild moisturizer at night. No makeup for the past month either. No change yet. There are many puzzling things about the human body, but this condition really takes the cake. It’s incredible that 4 days of using CeraVe ointment on chapped skin can cause an inflammatory condition that cannot heal itself even after 2 months. I’m not really interested in long-term antibiotic treatment because it has too many other side effects on the body (also, I work in microbial genomics, public health, and antibiotic resistance - this kind of Ab use is a big no-no in our field). I guess it’s just part of my life now. But geez...I go to bed every night wishing I could go back in time and just leave my raw skin alone. I thought I was doing a good thing by using the CeraVe on it...I sure learned my lesson. LOL.

I battled this for over 5 years. Prescribed Metronidazole cream and used faithfully. Took about 4 months to notice an improvement..continued use for over a year...eventually cleared up. Within months of stopping the cream it came back. I finally started researching this. My problem was sulfates! Stopped use of SLS containing products (facial cleansers, certain toothpastes, etc). I had a DRAMATIC improvement within 3-4 days. No problems since! Not sure how much sulfate containing products are in contributing to this but thought this may help someone😊 Thank you for your videos!! GREAT content!

I love your videos! Do you have recommendations for chemotherapy (ac/taxol) related skin dryness beyond hyaluronic acid and vigilant moisturizing? Also, for mastectomy scars. Finally any opinions of Paula's choice?
