This late 1960s color training film for police officers “Play it Cool - A Question of Attitudes” is about how attitudes affect situations between police and citizens. It was produced in cooperation with the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Inc. and distributed by Association Instructional Materials. It was written and directed by Lee R. Bobker. Some of the film is just the narrator looking at the camera and explaining points. The film opens from the vantage point of a group of teenagers sitting on a car hood parked along the street. Two police officers approach. One uses his billy club to touch the chest of one of the young men. This is seen as an escalation and the guys get more aggressive in their speech. The same situation is shown from the police officers’ point of view, who see the guys as belligerent and argumentative (:08-2:44). The confrontation is shown again (4:11-5:00). A motorcycle officer with sirens on aggressively points and pulls a car over, sternly approaches the car, and brusquely asks questions. The same scenario is shown with the officer using a friendlier approach, and the driver is also much friendlier in return (6:00-8:28). Two men argue on a street corner and start a fist fight. Two officers run up and try to aggressively separate the two men, leaving them in proximity to each other and they attack each other again. The scene is shown again with the two officers each taking one of the men and walking and talking with them in opposite directions (8:30-10:45). A group of high school students are blocking the entrance to the high school. Some walk and carry picket signs. Two officers aggressively arrive and demand the students break it up without allowing them to even talk and explain. A fight ensues between students and the police become involved in it. The same scenario is shown with the officers approaching in a non-threatening manner. They ask the students to explain the situation and talk them into dispersing on their own (10:46-14:58).

The motorbike officer did the approach wrong, in other Training Video's, I've seen. You don't directly stand next to the door, as the driver may open it and hit you with it, it also comes with a risk of getting shot, since the driver doesn't have to fully turn his or her head. The officer also didn't check the back seat for any unwanted guests with a handgun. That's the stuff I've seen, this could be different nowadays though.

It is possible there were factors nullifying this, that those tactics are no longer taught, or a third option. That being, you didn't hit him or shoot him, so if everyone he stops is like you, he doesn't have to take such precautions. Could just be the area he works jn.

Police now use “asp” which are made of steel that extend to a full size baton with a snap of the wrist. In animal control, we use old hand-me-down police wooden batons or “night sticks” which we now call “bite sticks” in animal control to hold out in front of aggressive dogs to give them something to bite over not biting the Animal Control Officer. I ask you, would you rather have a steel baton or an old wooden police hand-me-down baton when going up against an aggressive, teeth barring, 100 pound dog?

The 60s can be divided into 3 periods: early, mid and late. The early 60s was more like the conservative, late 50s but with a touch of the more liberal attitudes that you would later see in the mid 60s. The mid 60s was the period between a still conservative but reluctant to change folk, and the more liberal pre hippy *slash* late beatnik folk who wanted to break out of conservatism and free up everything like drugs and sex. By the late 1960s all hell broke loose, and it carried out onto the early 70s. This film seems like the mid to late 60s because of the hairstyle the kids are wearing. But the cars and clothing seem like very late 60s or early 70s.

Viewing it as a burned or a responsibility that one party is to uphold is quite wrong, in my opinion. This video only deals in the psychological, practical side of attitude. It does not combat the morality of a good attitude, which I think can be quite universally understood as not a burden, but common courtesy - a sign of altruism and being good-hearted, not wishing the other person to feel poorly- a sign of basic, mutual respect, even. It's like deciding which gender is supposed to give more oral sex in a relationship - it takes away the point of doing it and turns it into a mechanical instinct, which can be seen with the American custom of "How are you doing?"
