Officer Down Code Three is a short 1975 film adapted from Pierce R. Brooks’ book of the same name, presented by Motorola, and was directed by Murray Woroner of Woroner Films. The film reenacts actual case histories to show how the majority of police officer deaths in the U.S. come from officers not “following the book” and being guilty of one of several key mistakes. The film opens with shots of police officers from the state of Florida gathering for the funeral of an officer killed in the line of duty. There is a reenactment of an officer down with a gunshot wound (07:52; 03:42). A police car with lights flashing drives down a highway (04:07). A Miami police officer pulls up to the site of the “code three.” A fire rescue ambulance arrives at the scene (05:08). The film discusses the ten reasons that most likely result in the death of an officer. There is a shot from the street of the Second National Bank of North Miami (12:18), which is the scene of another example of officers not taking the situation seriously-they assume the silent alarm is a malfunction and are unexpectedly shot by bank robbers. Policemen load a flag-covered coffin into a hearse (16:41). A police car with lights flashing drives through a residential area to a house where a man with shotgun is holed up (17:11). The officer is guilty of what the film calls “Tombstone Courage” and is shot and killed in the standoff. A line of police cars drive in procession for a slain police officer’s funeral (19:30). There is a shot of a McDonald’s lit up at night (20:12). The film then concludes with the final scenario (sleeping on the job), which results in the death of the officer for whom the funeral is held.

Was a Police Explorer from 1972-74. Then as a Federal Officer from 1989-1994 then a school district Police Officer from 1994-2018. I remember this film from a plethora of training classes and the academy. During my tenure in the school policing business, I had two partners hurt in the line of duty. One was shot in the hip by a high school graffiti artist in front of a school ( not during school hours) and the other was blinded in one eye by an 8th grade male student armed with a baseball bat during a burglary at an elementary school. I have since retired with only knee, back, and arthritis from broken bones but I am alive due to my relentless pursuit for training. NEVER BE COME COMPLACENT! Complacency kills. Watch your six and keep your powder dry, boys! Stay safe…

I have had neighbors who are in law enforcement. They have shown this film to students at the police academy. This film is also shown to recruits going through as Military Police officers. Some of them during their time they served have lost a few colleagues. The worst was 09/11/2001 when New York City, Port Authority of New York & New Jersey lost their finest men and women. Also all the cars used were Chrysler cars.

Yep, saw this when I was attending the Police Academy in Pierre back in the early 1970's. Same class that told us we needed to keep our backs strong because back injuries were the number one reason for police disability. Wish I had listened to that one. I live on heavy duty narcotics following 5 major surgeries to try and repair my back injuries from an accident back in '92. We need to pay attention to these, even today the instructions ring true. Small town policing is getting worse and worse with budget cutbacks, long hours with little sleep, low pay forcing some officers to take second jobs, which add to the exhaustion that can lead to these unnecessary deaths. I have seen all of the mistakes made over my 24 years on the force. Thank God that none of them resulted in the death of an officer, but I am not alone depending on fentynal to get me through another long, boring day of sitting in a damn power lift recliner waiting for God to call my number.

I was surprised that the film showed that incident as I was used to seeing the "perfect cop" in training films. It was always the total fault of the "bad guys". I saw it in the 1970's when a member of my MP unit in the NJNG brought it to the armory.

Used in follow up investigation. I recall responding to a nasty fatal accident a few miles out of town. The dead were all native Americans from a nearby reservation. If I remember there were 7 people in the car that overturned, no seatbelts and it tossed bodies left and right. One was laying on the highway and a Deputy had drawn the outline. One of the asshole HP that showed up drew the balls and dick on the outline. The mom to that dead kid showed up and saw the nasty. She broke down even worse , seems 3 of the kids were hers. What a shock. The Sheriff reported the activity of the HP who lost his badge over that one. Shit happens but you have to stay alert even after the event and during the cleanup.

1970's era blood effects, its like Campbells tomato soup and milk. I dunno, I never watched these. A lot of our training videos were made using footage from dashcams. Of course one training film was the venerable "Surviving Edged Weapons" I have fond memories because a chunk of my Academy class loved action and horror movies, so it was surreal watching it and the weight of the real officers stories and scars, the autopsy photos of real cops killed by stabbings, that was a ice bucket dumped on your head while you're trying not to laugh at some of the goofiest acting.
