I can't find vermiculite either! I've always used vermiculite because it has minerals and is very light. It is really nice to loosen the soil. Perlite is something that I know grabs moisture but not something I've used. It seems that they interchange these two today.

I use straight vermiculite to start cuttings. When I first started doing it I was told by another grower that it would be too wet and that it wouldn't work, but I have had great success in the last 7 years doing this. I have used both the fine and the medium or large and both work equally well, but I started buying more of the fine, because it has more uses across the board, like for seed starting. Thanks for the video, I had always been confused as well.

@Liz B I haven’t tried those plants but do everything in vermiculite. Unfortunately, vermiculite is no longer produced in the US and comes from South Africa I believe, so it will be harder to come by. For this reason I have had to switch to pearlite and light soil like seed starting mix.

This was an awesome video! I did not know the difference between the two and had wondered. Many of the directions for propagation by cutting say to use vermiculite and I had always thought that vermiculite and perlite were the same thing. Now I know why so few of my cuttings make it, the perlite just doesn’t hold water enough for them to thrive.

So grateful for this explanation! Sometimes it’s hard to suss out the differences between soil additives. Personally I would appreciate follow ups with other things commonly used to amend soils and how/why you’d use. So perhaps touching on pumice, clays, bonsai mix, diatomaceous absorbent chips (floor-dry), chicken grit, gel crystals, coconut coir, peat, and so on. Perhaps even sharing some of your fave soil mixes or recipes. Thanks so much!

Thank you SO much. I have struggled with knowing what the difference between these two were as well. Im terrible about over watering my house plants & often add peralite. But I wasn't sure it i should be trying the other. Now i know for sure not to with most of my house plants. I just recently learned what dampening off was & I had had it happen many times. Now I know. I'm going to get myself some vermiculite! I'd like to hear about how pumice fits in as the other person mentioned.

Thanks so much for explqining thr differences between vermiculite and perlite. I have been using perlite 50/50 with potting soil for my succulents with great success. However, I hate that the perlite floats to the top😕. I have recently switched ovednto potting soil, pumice, turface, chicken grit, and horticultural charcoal. I get great drainage however believe I will need to water more frequently. I will have to see how this works out for me but at leas the floating perlite is not a factor. Thanks for sharing😊👍❤.
