HA! I've just seen both the science videos and now this one.. NOW I KNOWETH ALL TEH THINGS!!!~! Seriously though.. great info! Much thanks.. Great to know the function of both and how these apply to plants.. I'm concluding that a mix of both, depending on the plant's specific needs and the soil it's mixed in, would be best.. As a gamer, this answer "it depends" to the question "which is best" is like music to my ears.. having all this info in my little head now just feels SO good! As bad as Kaylee is for my wallet, so good are you two to the stuff she makes me buy 😸😸🤜💖🤛

Vermiculite has a much higher cation exchange capacity (the ability to hold on to nutrients). I use both in my soil mixes to take advantage of their respective strengths, and mitigate their respective weaknesses.

Coughing through a cloud of perlite dust is just part of the process of planting/repotting. It's a rite of passage for your new plant, a welcoming ceremony of coughs. Thanks to your channel, i learned to "add soil to my perlite" and stopped getting root rot. Hope youre doing alright in this sucky year, thanks for everything.

What are the environmental consequences of producing and using these materials? Could you make a video about environmentally friendly substrates or is it problematic when your sponsor uses peat in their soil mixes? I would love to see more videos about what you think about this, and about how to reuse and recycle soil mix 😊😊♻️🌿 I always learn new things from your videos so thank you 💕

Hey Summer, great video, and very informative content, cannot emphasise that enough! It was your channel and your way to present plants that got me passionate about houseplants, so thanks for that! From the beginning of the pandemic I added about 60 plants to my home, next to the three plants that have somehow survived my neglect over the years! I just wanted to say that your channel is very special and somewhat unique due to the amount of scientific knowledge you incorporate in your videos; it's the thing I appreciate the most about your channel, followed by the quality of video production. There are plenty of houseplant channels out there that just spew out anecdotal evidence ("this worked for me, but no idea why") and while that's easy to replicate, it doesn't help us, beginners, generalise that advice to plants that require different care/conditions. The way you approach things, be it describing the natural habitat or structure of plants or the physical and chemical structure of soil amendments, makes it really easy to understand the general principles and then adapt that to particular scenarios. I hope that wherever the channel is heading, you will not leave out the technical details, and thank you for being such a wonderful educator in houseplant matters!

Hi Summer Rayne, you should visit Arids and Aroids in Silang, Cavite, Philippines co-owned by Mr. Boyet Ganigan, a famous plant collector in the Philippines and well known in botany all over the world, who's been in a business for almost 40 years, he created the most famous sanseveria which is a hybrid variegated worth 500, 000 dollars, and also he got the most rarest aroids in the world, it is so phenomenal. He also owned a very huge conservatory botanical garden which has a virgin forest inside and a lake, housing the most rarest and only one species of plant in the world. It will be an amazing tour, the best tour you could ever dreamed of your entire life. When you're there words aren't enough to describe such an experience. Never missed it.
What’s the difference between LECA, perlite, pumice and vermiculite?
