About Geoff:
Geoff is a world-renowned permaculture consultant, designer and teacher. He has established permaculture demonstration sites that function as education centres in all the world’s major climates - information on the success of these systems is networked through the Permaculture Research Institute and the www.permaculturenews.org website.
About Permaculture:
Permaculture (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permacu...) integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies - imitating the no waste, closed loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts and at any scale. It is a multidisciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics and community development.

True, I would like to start practicing permaculture with a farm both in tropical Africa and in the UK. Could someone please let me know when the next Geoff's permaculture online PDC course starts and the cost. I have so far been unable to get through to the course providers, thanks

I'm in. I quit corporate America 10 years ago and my 401K was pitiful so I left it in high risk, high yield and pretty much forgot about it. It's now (as soon as I can get it out before the whole edifice crashes down) enough to at least get started - to get out and stay out. I'm a technical guy living in a temperate climate. Is there a data sheet of temperate food plants I can start with? It's how I learn best.

There are some things people wanting to practice permaculture need to understand. You said it "we learn from nature". But a lot of people (seems most permaculture people) are really just copying what the same half dozen people are doing. They fail to take into account their own local climate, geography, and ecosystems.

This is true. Learning from what you see others do is fine, but many techniques don't apply in all areas.

You start with what you know and evolve as you go. Sure it can seem boring everyone offering the same thing but one day someone will figure out something new. Maybe you will be the person who sees the next step? Maybe through mistakes of copying other people's layouts you learn what yours actually is? It's better than everyone still doing it the old way imagine if everyone had thier yards filled with biodiversity and permaculture? How can you poo poo on a movement that can only benefit the person, the community and ultimately the world.

So much of the knowledge that permaculture has incorporated into itself has been carried down the centuries to us by people who have never been acknowledged. Science isn’t going to go out and test every marginal plant for edibility, but that knowledge has been passed down to us in many places. European “civilization” tried to eradicate a lot of knowledge, at home and the places that they colonized. Indigenous and non-indigenous people have carried that knowledge forward in time in spite of every effort made to dispossess them of land and culture. And yet now, much of that knowledge is given freely back to the world. So don’t forget to give back to the people who have been practicing sustainable agriculture since before anyone thought it was cool.

Theballonist our garden plant diversity is now international and 800 times more diverse than it was 200 years ago. Our appropriate technology that can be designed into our systems now would be unimaginable 50 years ago. Our knowledge of energy auditing for a sustainable outcome and the possibility of positive carbon economy potential creating ecologically beneficial humanity is with us right now. At the core of this design potential positivity is the ancient history of our pre-industrial ancestral heritage.

If there is a real "climate change" is because the majority of people have not understood this knowledge, yet this knowledge and principles provides hope for the climate problems and the changes in the future. #permaculture

Yeah that's a shame. You can still do permaculture without letting go of your own country's national identity. I don't know why he brought it up in the first place.

If you get rid of the idea that the inanimate world KNOWS what it needs, and KNOWS how to regulate itself, you can start to see that God designed "the nature of things in the world" (Physics, Biology, etc.) so well, with such complexity, that they SEEM to be exhibiting knowledge. They are, but not their own!

I've been thinking. Actually, except for the trees and maybe some shrubs, it's in no way permanent. Nor will it sustain itself for very long without human management. In your case, the domestic animals would destroy it and in my case, without supplemental watering, only the trees and maybe some shrubs would survive. And you'd definitely have to picture it without any annuals. It's only the easiest way to garden is all.
