German soldiers were taught to aim for the enemy beltbuckle, because mausers always shot high. Its nice to know this in long range shooting, i can outdistance modern assault rifles without worry. Lol

That must have been inconvenient when the enemy was inconsiderate enought to not stand up in the open and fought from a trench or was using the kneeling or prone positions ..... No wonder they lost two world wars.

@@314299 ah, but thats why they went to the mp44 and 8mm kurz round. And for around corners, there was the krummlauf device. They didnt lose for being stupid, they were overwhelmed by mass production.

I'd be pretty happy to get 3" groups with Mauser sights anymore. I think we all agree that storage conditions have a lot do with primer longevity. Some stuff seems to be very reliable despite it's age, while other batches can be spotty at best, despite being produced much later.

Yes, storage does indeed impact primer life, cool temperatures certainly extend storage life while high temperatures lessen storage life. Of course there is the issue of the quality of the initial product, it seems that high quality primers store much better than low quality ones. An example would be WW2 Canadian 303 ammo, which in my experience is still very reliable, compared to Pakistani 303 made in the 1960-70 period which is noted for unreliability.

Yes it certainly is. Unless proven otherwise one should assume that they are buying some components for salvage and not necessarily usable ammo. This stuff is still good enough to use in bolt actions, but in five or ten years might be full of duds.

Great test. Primers are an issue after so many years. Had some 45ACP from the 50's that gave me huge issues one the primers side. Thanks for sharing

Yep, primers are generally the first component to degrade or fail. I was given a few hundreds of rounds of WW2 British made 9x19mm, most of it would not go off at all and if it did performance was erratic. When the bullets were pulled and the powder transferred to other brass with fresh primers the powder worked fine and velocity produced were normal.

Interesting results. The change of impact with different case and primers is curious. Crimp/neck tension may be a factor? 🤔 I have a hell of a time with the sights my K98k , actually impressed with some of your groups. I may have been able to shoot mine better a few decades ago. Eyes just aren’t what they used to be. Always enjoy your videos , thanks for putting in the time. 👍🏻

I think you are correct with the big difference being neck tension. The factory rounds seem to have very low neck tension, when I pulled the ammo apart the bullets came out very easily. This is something that I neglected to mention in the video, thanks for bringing it up. As for the sights on the Kar 98k I've never been a fan of them, even when I was in my teens I did not care for the "V" notch and inverted "V" front sight. Now that I'm in my 50's I like them even less!

@@314299. RifleChair in Canada filed the front blade of his M48 Yugo Mauser making it a bit thinner and it seemed to help a bit. Check out his KZfaq channel. I currently have and M48 that’s getting a fine sanding of the stock and oiling 1to2 part mineral spirits and boiled linseed oil. Then a Timney trigger and a Burris 2x7 long eye relief “Scout Scope” with a BDC reticle mounted on a Brass Stacker mount system which eliminates drilling and tapping the receiver. I live in FL and am considering getting some reloading equipment and working out some loads using soft point bullets in the 175 gr weight realm for hunting out to 300 yards with this rifle. I think that higher velocities and better accuracies are achievable with this rifle. Your opinion would be appreciated. Oh the M48 barrel length is the same as the K98.

That Persian ammo was more consistent than I've heard it usually is, which is surprising. I managed to get 4 crates of the Swedish from Marstar and that's what I generally use as well. I find it's consistent enough. K98s just aren't 2 MOA guns - unless you get really lucky.

About all you can expect out of the old girl. Good shooting on your part, all considered and interesting results on the reloads. Crimps I suppose but also remixing / destratification of the powder and introducing some fresh air would play a positive role.

I kind of thought this would go the way it did, you are correct "Battle Rifle" was the expectation of the country that had these rifles made and 3-4 MOA was a standard they were expecting and accepted (Good Enough). I feel you did pretty good, the evaluation was done to the best of anyone's ability with the rifle and ammunition. This was a good realistic video for what a person would get with this combination. -Dave

As always there is the competency of the "trigger puller" thrown into the testing equation. I've no doubt that there are shooters who could extract more accuracy from this ammo/rifle combo than I can. It would be interesting to see what other shooters could do with this combo. It would be interesting to see what kind of velocities and accuracy could be achieved using lighter bullets in the 175gr realm using perhaps even soft points with just below maximum powder charges! Also using the longer barreled G98 or the BRNO manufactured Persian Mauser rifles which are renowned for their accuracy and quality! I am of the opinion that the potential for the 8mm Mauser round has not been fully explored as yet.

While loading and testing 175 grain in the 8mm Mauser would no doubt be interesting it would be an expensive endeavor with the price of bullets/primers/powder in today's market.

How do you like to clean your Mauser after a range trip?
@314299
@314299 2 жыл бұрын
I clean up the bore after shooting corrosive ammo using a 9 to 1 mix of Ballistol and water, followed up with drying the bore and then using strait up Ballistol. This procedure has been 100% effective in removing the corrosive priming residue, and is less hassle than some other methods I've tried.

@AA-dn8dj 2 жыл бұрын
@@314299 Thanks I love using Ballistol, but I wasn't sure if I should mix it in water. Do you pour the 9-1 mix down the bore or just wipe it with patches? I roll a piece of paper towel around an AKM cleaning kit jag for my .308 to .323 bores and it wipes all sides of the bore evenly. I just went and shot my M24.47 today, it was a lot of fun.

@314299
@314299 Жыл бұрын
Your statement is leads me to a question: 2-3 MOA is acceptable to who? If the answer is acceptable to you, then fine, no arguing that. If one is talking about military acceptance standards then it depends on what military, what rifle and what period that is being referenced. Since the rifle in the video is a German one I can say that their accuracy standards for German 98 Mauser rifles was much larger than 2-3 MOA. Reference this video where the German acceptance standards of the day are discussed: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZ2VhLdqscu6lXk.html

What we are trained to in the U.S. Army is 2-3 M.O.A. I want to say the CMP (Civillian Marksmanship Program) stated the M1 Garand was 5.5 M.O.A. at rack grade.
