Persian Poem: No.39 Hafez Shirazi
Wherefore should pine and cypress adorn my garden's glade?
To whom shall yield in stature my Box grown in the shade?
Young charmer, tell me, prithee, what faith is held by thee,
Who deem'st my blood more lawful than mother's milk to be?
When grief, yet distant, threatens, bespeak the wine-cup pure,
Distinguished is the sickness, and ascertained the cure.
Shall the old Magian's threshold no more receive my kiss?
His mansion harbours Fortune, his portal widens bliss.
No kind of ware save heart-break can in my street be bought;
The mart of self-vendition is elsewhere to be sought.
From fumes of wine grown heady, my friend gave hope-last eve
But what to-day the promise, what will that head conceive?
The "Pain of Love," one story, is told us o'er and o'er:
Yet, strange to say, by no one 'tis worded as before. "
Shíráz, and Rukní's water slight not, nor yon soft breeze;
The cheek of the Seven Climates has water but from these.
Far off is Khizar's water, which in Zulmat doth bide,
From our more noble water, Allâhu Akbar's tide.
Content, the poor man's honour, I seek not to forego:
Predestined, tell the monarch, is what we need below.
How strange a branch of candy,
HÁFIZ, thy reed has grown,
That honey and pure sugar
No fruit so luscious own!

باغِ مرا چه حاجتِ سرو و صنوبر است؟
شمشادِ خانه‌پرورِ ما از که کمتر است؟
ای نازنین‌پسر، تو چه مذهب گرفته‌ای؟
کِت خونِ ما حلال‌تر از شیرِ مادر است
چون نقشِ غم ز دور ببینی شراب خواه
تشخیص کرده‌ایم و مداوا مقرّر است
از آستانِ پیرِ مغان سر چرا کشیم؟
دولت در آن سرا و گشایش در آن در است
یک قصّه بیش نیست غمِ عشق، وین عجب
کز هر زبان که می‌شنوم نامکرّر است
دی وعده داد وصلم و در سر شراب داشت
امروز تا چه گوید و بازش چه در سر است
شیراز و آبِ رکنی و این بادِ خوش نسیم
عیبش مکن که خالِ رُخِ هفت کشور است
فرق است از آبِ خضر که ظلمات جای او است
تا آبِ ما که منبعش الله اکبر است
ما آبرویِ فقر و قناعت نمی‌بریم
با پادشه بگوی که روزی مقدّر است
حافظ چه طُرفه شاخ نباتیست کِلکِ تو
کِش میوه دلپذیرتر از شهد و شکّر است
