Maybe, but even before that, Joker had already been chosen by Lavenza/Igor/Yalgabalth, so we would have still discovered the metaverse by some other means.

Kamoshida had already revealed the protagonist’s criminal record to the whole school prior to that, he subconsciously knew from the beginning he was up to no good

The gloved hand of Akechi that faces us is his left hand. The glove he gave us was his right hand, which we don’t get to see. There’s still unfinished business between them, and I think that’s what this ending signifies.

He gets mentioned if you talk to muhen (the jazz club owner) and Joker says something like "I still have his glove, our fight is not over yet". Seems pretty interesting, just like you said something is coming.

We don't really know how's his hometown tho. Plus there's his family here and he was sent to Tokyo only because of his probation. And it's quite fitting on a thematic note. One of the main Aesop of Persona is that life change. Hence why the protags go somewhere else, they finished their journey, and must embark for a new one.

I believe its like that because you're not always gonna be with your friends and that's true in real life. That's one thing I like about the new ending. Everyone going their separate ways to achieve their goals. It's very realistic

I love how Sojiro is holding himself to not cry before Ren. His voice just trembles when saying "What're you doing? Hurry up and go." Then, he wipes his tear. This scene gets me fucking every time. He's such a dad figure.

Ann in the original true ending: "We can totally do whatever we want to do." Ann in Royal's True ending: "We don't make the train schedule." It's interesting that the original true ending is sort of a "happily ever after" ending, whereas Royal's True ending seems to acknowledge that an ending like that isn't aligned with the reality that the group ultimately embraces.

Akechi rings Joker's phone at the end to have him look out at the window and see him; he does it because he's most likely with Shido's associates (who are looking for Joker) and doesn't want to cause a scene. He lets him know that he's alive and that's why Joker smiles at the end :)

Entering adulthood is actually the main theme of Persona 2 Eternal punishment. This is more like “decide to continue on your path (which is trying to find justice in real world) and despite the pain you will meet”.

@@BURGATRON i kinda want that being P5 Arena story, though. It's main goal is how to free Makoto Yuki without Nyx being released. And well, PT vs IT is unevitable due to their background at a first time, although the focus is split between Ren and Yu.

Before this ending, when sumire showed joker the picture of them at the shrine I went bonkers cause that couldn't have happened unless akechi was arrested and they kept saying he died and I was like no he didnt and I saw this ending and I was like I fucking called it.

What happens when the person that's maintaining this "Perfect" Society disappears. People will have been living in this "Perfect" Society for so long, not doing anything to actually develop as a society, that once you get out of it, you're basically so dependent on this "Perfect" World (without even knowing it) that you won't know what to do if it's suddenly taken from you.

I think this ending is great, however is anyone just a little disappointed that Sumire is not only not with the rest of the group in the van, but she also hardly says anything to him, let alone a goodbye. Also no goodbye when you go around saying bye to all the confidants ;-; Edit: And now that I'm looking at the credits again there's no little animation of her either. Not even a picture of her in the scrolling part :(

People think she is forced because they aren't used to seeing her in scenes that didn't have her in vanilla, it's a bias. Also she had a lot of things to do and she was already at the train station anyway (she was most likely moving to a different train route as well) so it wouldn't make much sense cuz she left before Ren left.

I really like this ending. That conversation with Maruki is incredibly heart tugging, and all the thieves waving goodbye as the van drives away is super endearing. And of course, the Akechi sighting after the credits is intriguing. The one part I didn’t like too much was Sumire, but I get that they had to keep this the same regardless of your bond with her, so I’ll let it slide.

I’ve heard that it wasn’t translated very well to a western audience so a lot of people didn’t notice that. That and the train was about to leave (Also, love that username)

God, I just felt so empty when I got this ending. I definitely think it was the best choice, and I don't regret or feel bad about how it turned out. However, specifically about Akechi, I just had so many questions from that deal he made with Joker. I talked to the jazz club owner before leaving, and he said that Akechi's been gone for a while, and asked since he and Joker were friends, to bring him back sometime. The game talks about Akechi's glove still being in his pocket and their unfinished deal, and leaves it at that. Doesn't even state that Akechi, for sure, is dead. The dialogue just goes to Joker thinking something along the lines of, "Tell Akechi? But Akechi's...." And that's it. Akechi is now three periods. I'm just. Questions? So many questions? I was so desperate for answers I even checked the description for his confidant again, and nope, didn't change. Still "When will we fulfill that other promise?" stuff. I already ran out of hope and then Atlus throws in that _last_ bit of Akechi at the train station. Please, don't give me hope. Third semester ready dragged my body through the ground and threw it into a dumpster fire on 2/2. He's dead, he's alive, he's dead, he's alive? God, I love his character so much, don't do this to me Atlus lol. I really hope they give some sort of conclusion to their relationship, but that's probably not going to happen. It feels so open-ended regarding him, and I frankly don't know how to feel lol. Regardless, what a great game, definitely worth it

@@IMZ44 I think the argument could be made that Strikers could be connected to Royal. The true ending makes Akechi’s fate ambiguous, and Sumire’s absence could easily be explained as “she’s at a gymnastics event.”

9:23 When that piano starts everything about this game just hits you After the completely mixed feeling of sorrow and wholesomeness you experience after going through the final part of the game, the credits just make you realize how amazing this story was that they told. Seriously how does one company make a story and characters so perfect? It almost moved me to tears... and also Akechi got his justice. This true ending is so well done because it feels like they're foreshadowing more, but at the same time it also feels complete.

So when I first saw this ending, I was kinda disappointed. But looking back at it, there’s a lot to love here. Maruki becoming a cab driver, where he sees a variety of people every day and do what he can to make their day even a little better was a great ending for him. The PTs going their separate ways, while sad, is also good because they are teenagers. And throughout all of this, they’ve learned they still have a lot of growing they could do in their own ways. And that when the time is right, they’ll see each other again. And finally, Joker taking off his glasses. It’s confirmed in Royal they’re fake, and I think it’s hinted that he wears them for style, but also to seem like less of a delinquent. He doesn’t where them in the scene where he shoves Shido. In a way, his glasses are his mask, which is why they fell off whenever he first awakened Arsene. And what does he do after his long journey? He takes off his final mask, ready to face the world he left as his real self.

I fucking started tearing up when we learn Akechi is back because of Maruki. Like holy shit they used AKECHI to make your decision my god. I also jumped when I saw him after the credits. I am happy sad confused and I don’t know if he is alive or not but it probably doesn’t matter cause it was just a little “haha you were good friends with pancake man so here he is”

Even after most of us wanted a happy ending like in the original Persona 5, Maruki's last line to the Joker encloses the result of the catharsis in which everything you carried just went away. "If you find yourself struggling in life... you can start over, like me." Gosh... what an indulgent moment. I'm so grateful that this piece of art exists. I do think this game is a therapeutic experience and I'm glad it has a large fan community. Phantom Thieves exist while we follow their example. Hugs to all of you Phantom Legacy.

I hope scramble does get translated and dubbed into English, I hope we do see the Phantom Thieves again in a game centred around them I honestly think when Persona 6 gets released it will have tough shoes to fill. About the post credits scene… When I first played Royal and decided to keep on with this “True ending”, I came across to say my final goodbyes to the old jazz club we were introduced by Akechi himself. The owner asked, without knowing, if the protagonist saw Akechi these days, since he wasn’t going often, and of course his response was a lie. What caught my attention was Ren (protag) saying “I still have his glove, our deal is still going on”. I thought of it as something not remarkable, as a memory of their relationship, but looking at the post credit scene….the missing glove, the re-appearance of the presumed dead Akechi Goro, and Ren seeing in his reflection his Persona. Perhaps he, or WE weren’t aware of how true his “Our deal is still going on” was.

I feel this ending is much more of a cliffhanger than an actual conclusion like the original felt. I mean I still like it but to be honest if Persona 6 happens sooner than later than Joker's a must with how subtle it is that he's still connected to the metaverse. It could be like a P2 Eternal Punishment deal with how the P1 characters return for P2.

after 126 hours, i finally finished persona 5 royal. I have never had so much fun playing a video game in my whole life. (no cap) this game is taught me so much about friendship, life, hope, and freedom of finding yourself. everything from the soundtrack, story, gameplay, and characters captivated me so much. many tears was shed, many hype and funny memories were had, and many treasures were stolen LOL . im grateful to had be alive and had experienced this game for the first time. this game captured my heart. LOL i am officially a persona fan now. i feel so empty now LMAO, guess they stole my heart. (PUN) but I hope one day that I can find my Phantom thieves ; friends that are genuine and honest enough to appreciate my flaws and see the worth inside of me. this game MEANS the world to me and its a gem that changed my life for the better. may we meet again msfts. ann, akechi, ryuji, makoto, yusuke, futaba, haru, morgana, sumire, sae and sojiro , thank you for making these 2 months the best times of my life. ❤️

So what made me cry is knowing that now i have to say goodbye to them... "Ah but you still have persona 5 strikers and some characters will appear in the new game", yeah but characters like Sumire and Maruki will never apoear again, this is the last we will see of them...

This seems like such a oddball ending in comparison to the original good ending. The original ending seemed very final. Like yeah, they are gonna meet again (as seen in P5S) but it doesn't directly tease anything. The story of the Phantom Thieves could've ended right there and there wouldn't really have been any questions unanswered. This ending seems almost like it's setting up a sequel. The way they leave things open with Akechi, the way Joker sees his Metaverse self reflected, the way they set up all of the main casts futures. It makes me believe, that we are gonna return to Shibuja with an adult Joker, to face another threat, to get the band back together and hopefully to manage Le Blanc (I think that would be a fitting career for Joker).

The reason why I think Akechi is alive is similar to how Morgana came back, they all saw Morgana to have a place in the world, even though he was a being that should have disappeared, all seven of them had the cognition of Morgana having a place and as a result he was able to come back. All nine of them, and that the public still supported Akechi, that must have allowed the version of him in Maruki’s world to exist and to have a place in the real world. Even though the real him is dead, the fact the Maruki Akechi Goro was there, and had a place in the world as one of them, it would stand to reason why he exists.

Here’s the gap I’ve come to understand with how Akechi survived. Maruki didn’t revive him from the dead, he simply removed the circumstances that he- or rather, Joker- believed led to his death. So basically, Maruki made it so Akechi was never confronted by Shido’s cognition of him, or something along those lines. It’s made fairly obvious too, considering none of the other thieves question his survival until they break free of the altered reality, and it’s explicitly stated that Shido was the one palace that the thieves went through in this new reality. Joker and Akechi are unaffected by Maruki’s tampering, so they retain their original memories. This is why Akechi’s memory has a gap. His memory remains planted in the original reality, so he can’t remember the altered version where he survived. So therefore, it’s never technically confirmed Akechi died during the confrontation. It’s entirely possible that he DID survive, and Joker just didn’t know, so Maruki granted his wish as if he had, then when reality reverted, Akechi was able to survive the encounter anyway.

Beat this game once and because I couldn't beat Dr. Maruki, I chose the bad ending Replayed it and maxed almost everyone out and got the true ending. Seeing Maruki starting over made me cry teats of joy. Such a great fleshed out character who ended up makingamends with his past and embracing the future. This game is just excellent.

Yea I just beat this game after putting it off for years and that fight was definitely the most challenging in the game. Which is how it should be. But after you figure out what you are supposed to be doing it becomes manageable. This is a very well put together game all the way around. But damn is it long.😂

Its not that i dont like it but i prefer the orignal ending cutscene when they drive down the highway this one is more to hint at im guessing scramble again its not that i dont like it i just found the other ending is a nicer end point

This feels so much more like an ending than the og. The characters actually say goodbye, and there's closure. They're all hopeful for their futures and confident enough in their bonds to say goodbye knowing they're gonna keep in touch. I think that Yoshizawa and Joker can have such a simple goodbye is testament to that.

Every ending still break every of my heart i wish there will more story about persona 5 or sequel to 5😢. The best game of the life-time for me.

The only thing missing from this ending is having one last group photo together like in P4. I understand that they're being chased but it would've been nice to have done it before the day Joker left.

so, my thoughts on sumire only saying "take care" are: i honestly don't think it's too terrible. sure, i would've prefered a more fleshed out ending, but hear me out; what if the player didn't continue her confidant after rank 5? i don't think she would be so emotionally attached to joker as she is if you max her, so i think a simple "take care" fits in this scenario. and if joker maxes her confidant, it could be interpreted that they only need few words, because they know each other so well. now, i said it wasn't too terrible, i didn't say they wheren't lazy. i mean, would it kill them to make maybe... 3 other options? one if you didn't max her, one if you maxed her and one if you romanced her. i know this might be a bit much considering that they're anime cut scenes, but persona 5 is one of the most detailed games i've ever played. atlus could've done more, but in case my first theory was true, that they wanted to make one line fitting for multiple scenarios... i appreciate the attempt, but atlus was still lazy. over all, i think this part wasn't bad, but not good either, just mediocre. but this is still the best video game ending i've ever expierienced, all my opinion of course

@@ShijioHirojima567 Well Scramble can apply to both really, so it probably won't mention Sumire or Akechi, but they could do what they did with 4 Ultimax and have the sequel to the sequel bring in elements just from Royal.

People might not agree with me but here's my opinion: in the vanilla version they took down the big bad and feel like the world is going to the better direction now, that every problem can be solved as long as they're together (Juvenile act of Akira/Ren get undone when the rest of the phantom thieves and their confidant pool together their strength to release Akira/Ren from captivity). And then Royal came in to rain on the parade. Akechi's alive or at least at first, causing his final plead in vanilla and the need for a sacrifice from Akira/Ren become a moot point. And then comes the third semester where everyone wish come true... like the world is heading into a better path.... That is until they realise that it's a fake reality created by Maruki. I mean fans are happy from akechi being alive, in game world Ryuji getting back to running, Ann friends being okay, Futaba mom coming back to life, etc are all a case of happily ever after ending. And the game didn't spare you the effort into making the whole thing natural or normal either. And thus came the journey to destroy such a beautiful lie in order to face the truth. Honestly if even after turning your head away from the perfect reality ending (happily ever after ending/fake ending) you're still gonna have another happily ever after ending for the true ending then what's the point of confronting the reality that maruki make in order to patch the world from it's imperfection (suffering). That's why i think a bittersweet ending fit this storyline better than if they still have the same spirit as in the vanilla ending.

There's the shot in P4 Arena of the Shadow Operatives that includes a few P1 and P2 characters, so that's been the implication so far for at least some of them.

May im over thinking it, but the fact that Sumire close her eyes and keep walking after the "take care" make me feel that she was actually, hiding her pain. May she didnt do it so emitional cuz she didnt want to Break. Just my thinking but i guess is curiuos. (and the fact that Maruki do Sumire and Joker cross paths, Also Maruki guide Joker to station where Sumire is to say good bye. Its kinda heartwarming for me)

Finally got around to finishing Royal. What a game. Wish I had this around when I was a confused teenager with social anxiety and anger issues and nowhere to turn to but entertainment to fill my time. Happy to see that even in mainstream gaming, resonant themes can still be discussed somewhat meaningfully every now and again.

I know this ending was more in line with the theme of the story, especially the maruki arc. Life won't always go as the way we wanted it, but through that you try to find happiness. But damn, i'll be lying if i said I prefer this over the original ending. The original is still bittersweet, though they can at least do one last trip for Akira. I mean, isn't that's the point too? Friends that you made along the way is the thing that makes it worthwhile. And don't get me started on how they handled sumire. I mean, damn bitch i thought you're grateful for Akira support and affection. The least you could do is hug him. But nonetheless, the amount of discussion this ending generates also show how great it is

They did Sumire dirty giving her such little focus during the actual “goodbyes”. That being said this story is wrapped up, I don’t even see room for a persona 5 arena

This is just one of those games where it really hurts to not continue the story with the characters and see how their lives play out. I don't know if I'd want a Persona 5-2 per-say, but man I'd love to see them create an anime that continues the story. There's very few games where I care about the characters and think about them regularly, this is definitely one of them though.
