My 16 year old triplets have friends who had part time jobs paying them $200 or $300 a week got laid off and received $600 to $800 a week on unemployment. It's no wonder why income is up.

You cant just add and subtract percentages like that. 100 + 3% + 34% - 10% => 103 + 34% - 10% => 138 - 10% => 124 so an increase of 24% over 3 quarters instead of 27% which is still a lot

The building industry crushed records last year and was the most profitable year yet. Out performing even a large storm year (roofing + hail, tornado, hurricane = $$$) This all shows no signs of slowing even as prices continue to rise. Also, note that I reside outside of Atlanta, which currently has a housing shortage so new construction starts continues to 💥. We cannot receive material quick enough for the demand, and could have had an even better year if it weren't for that. My wife is in the Big Tech industry so we have been blessed to be in two industries thriving. I'm not gloating just wanted to reinforce Unedu Econ and your presentation of wages during 2020. One consequence of stimulus and extra unemployment is that many nursing homes (at least in NY) can’t find good employees to hire. People quit when covid started, and no good people are applying for the jobs. So they’re understaffed or had to hire bad staff. This is for people caring for the old people we’re allegedly saving!

If you read the 2nd quarter text the talk about how employment incomes were down hy 27%. Yes the increase was all the transfer payments. 3rd Q was missing.

my simple suspicion. People make so little in some areas that an unemployment boost makes their financial situation much better.

I'm a CEO of a bailed out company, raising my paycheck 1000%, you are an average Joe with the same salary, now the state average got raised, yay! I rarely trust statistics, as they ain't corrected by excluding exceptionally high spikes. I'd like to see a statistic by job level.

No, no, no. Unless i miss my guess, what they are doing is shrinking the denominator , and those fewer left with jobs have higher salaries than those let go in the unfavored industries and small businesses. So it drives up the Per-employed personal income at a glance. But my guess is those who stayed employed didn't get huge wage increases. They just were making more than those jobs eliminated, or people furloughed.

What is scary is how little money your average person earns.

Yes, Personal income rising while having an economic collapse is totally insane and wrong. But how is artificially lowering the CPI and therefore keeping wages lower? How is bailing out the banks and letting the banksters just continue what they were doing? How is lowering the interest rate because the country's debt has gone too high? (In stead of paying off the debt and rising interest rates to force the debt lower.) ... About that CPI. Yes, We should work for our money. But we should also be compensated for our work honestly. So why not have a round of stimulus checks? Well, probably because the larger group of people will not spend the money wisely. But that's liberty, isn't it?

I believe it is because once you remove those low income workers because they are now unemployed that drives up the average as higher income workers were able to adjust/work from home and stayed employed which would increase the percentage but still allow the unemployment to increase.

George I think it could be because the lower income folks were the ones that lost their incomes thereby increasing averages.

There is also states that passed legislation to increase minimum wage. Like what they did in Florida. So this fluctuations in wages does no suprise me.

Market income counts? So all the zero labor hours reduced the denominator? Ratio of total dollars to hours invested? My favorite sandwich at R bees is now 7.99. Just the sando. Wouldnt by the bea's definition of inflation being denominated in wage directly create inflation? Then where is the reported inflation descripancy from their formulas? They never used cpi, it was always wage growth. The inconsistencies is astonishing.

I was watching a round table discussion on economics and they mentioned one of the reasons why incomes are increasing was due to mostly low income earners losing their jobs and white collar people could work from home. Therefore, since higher income workers still had jobs and low income workers did not, earnings were stronger amongst those still employed.

My income didn't go up non. Retired. My money stayed the same and my ex got the stimies they gave out. People best take that money and buy shit that will help them live when they can't afford to buy bread.

I do indeed not believe this. In the EU we get the bare minimum for compensation. Most businesses are soon to be gone forever, yet they expect a huge shortage of workers, they say. Unemployment will be skyrocketing in reality. Pensions will be gone in a few years. 1600 billion euros on paper. Gone where, nobody knows.
