Cleanest perspective shadow tutorial I've ever watched
@jacklewis2540

It would be worth pointing out in this tutorial the difference between an artificial light and the sun. If the shadow is cast by the sun then the light rays would be parallel due to the sun's great distance. If the light source is an artificial one e.g. a street lamp, then the light rays can be drawn from the light source. A simple explanation is that when you move sideways from an artificial light, the light stays fixed in its position whereas if you try and move sideways from the sun, then sun moves with you. Therefore the sun rays are parallel. It is a common error perpetuated in many perspective tutorials.

The projection of sunlight may be discussed in two situations: 1. When the sun is inside the screen, it should be used as a point light source, so the shadow effect is similar to that of street lights; 2. When the sun is outside the screen, it can be used as parallel light .

@@cupcakemcsparklebutt9051marcos mateo framed perspective 2 is a great book where this is discussed. Also , if the sun is located behind the viewer the light rays and shadows follow the same direction, because the light rays are parallel they will converge straight to a vanishing point, that point will be located on a vertical line bellow the shadows vanishing point(which will stand on the horizon line)

When I was growing up, I used to devour books about early computer graphics. This tutorial reminds me so strongly of the vector demos used in those early references, very nostalgic. Great tut too, thank you!

When you draw a line down from the light source, how do you determine where on the ground plane it will end?
@serloinz

that's for you to decide.. if it's further away from camera then don't draw down as much ..if it's closer then draw down more..hope this helps (i think i'm right haha)

How would this work if you used 3 point perspective for both the plane and the object casting the shadow, but the object's vanishing points are different from the plane's (it's like 3:45, but have the object is rotated on the plane a bit)?

When you draw a line from the light source to the ground plane, how do you decide where it stops? It seems like there are infinite points at which you can be within the ground plan and still directly below the light source.

Useful for local light but sunlight from in front, from the side, and from behind all have individually different rules from this. While sunlight is parallel in reality, in drawing, one only uses parallel lines from the side for angle and direction. When the sun is in front of or behind us, perspective is imposed on this parallel lines. When plotting points for shadows when the sun is in front of you the sun is placed and the plumb line is drawn down to meet the horizon. That is the shadow vanishing point. When plotting light from behind, the shadow vanishing point is placed somewhere on the horizon but a shadow trace point is placed directly below the SVP. This provides the angle of the light. The closer the two points are, the longer the shadows.

Couple of things wrong with this video. 1 You said the further away the light source is, the less defined the edges are, but that is incorrect, it depends on the power of the source, for example, the sun is billions of miles away, yet it can cast sharpened shadows, where as if an artificial light source was used, it would indeed have less defined shadow edges. 2, your light directions are off.
