My story of how I had nothing but headaches with the PerTronix Ignition Upgrade System for my 1972 Ford Pinto. Called to get some assistance from the company and didn't get much help. PerTronix said that sometimes there could be problems going on that they just don't understand what could be the issue.
Thank you for watching!

I bought this Pertronix and flame thrower coil pure junk , I put it on my 1966 Mustang 289 V-8 it worked ok for 2 years but last week while driving my car just died and would not start. I changed all the electrical parts including alternator and battery new fuel pump too. It was the Pertronix unit that cut off all electricity to my car. I never had my Mustang die while driving with bad points . I will only use points from now on they are mechanical and just fine I do not mind changing them when needed. Points are what these cars want they are how they came new from the factory and they are reliable .

you have to be careful installing these on older Fords and Chryslers...they have resistance wires or balast resistors from the stock ignition to the coil...this has to be bypassed or the unit will fail.

your stock coil wire from your key wire drops in voltage once the engine is running...it's tricky because it will read 12v with just the key on and not running...so it looks fine when it is not....when the engine was running you were probably getting somewhere around 6-8 volts to the coil before it entered the coil and then came up against the 3 ohms of internal resistance the coil...too much resistance not enough heat left to properly fire the plugs and not enough voltage for the pertroix unit.....your test of switching wires after the fact was too late...it was already fried....another problem that could have occurred is if you were using low resistance spark plug wires...points really like them...but with electronic ignitions, the lack of resistance allows a pulse to come back through the wire and back into the cap and rotor as the spark plug fires and this pulse will fry your electronic pickup in the distributor.

Same problem here. Ran fine with points. Installed pertronix 1181ls with flame thrower bypass ballast as instructed. Ran fine for a while but now same problem. Wont run hot. Wont drive only idle. Back to points now runs as it should.

It's the same exact issue you get when your condenser is bad and points are burning on a stock setup. I'd assume you just got a bad pickup. I run all kinds of coils on my cars, the main thing to get right is the ballast resistance so that you get the correct voltage going through the system when the ballast is warm. I was burning the hell out of the points on my 65 when I first set up the Accel Super Coil on it, I ended up adding a random additional capacitor to it, essentially making a larger capacity condenser. No idea what the actual capacitance is now but I've run it through 8 states with no problems. Moral of the story for me is to just keep playing with it until the setup works for my application, the textbook specs might not work right at all. So I don't see why the Flamethrower coil wouldn't work. The "never change points again" advertising always makes me laugh. When decent quality points are set up correctly, they last many trouble-free years. Thanks for your input on my video!

Yeah, I've had good success with points on many engines with little to no issues. The more and more I work on cars over the years the less and less I like aftermarket stuff especially when it comes to ignition components. I've thought about putting pertronix ignitor 3 points replacement kit on my 64 galaxie but with a new points distributor, good set of standard blue streak points and condenser and a brand-new engine with a tight timing set I have a very hard time wanting to change anything. It starts faster than any EFI or electronic ignition vehicle I have and revs to the moon. I know how to set and maintain points with a dwell meter quickly and spares kept in the trunk in a tiny little box should I ever need it so that helps. I've had a somewhat negative experience with a pertronix ignitor 2 system we put in my dads car, not really all that impressed with the company. My experience with aftermarket performance ignition systems and coils is they don't seem to last long even if everything is set up correctly. Never change points again, just change the whole ignition system in the left lane shoulder!

i have the first protonix and have the flame thrower coil for some reason i can see the oil in the coil start to bubble once the motor starts to get hot ... in my 68 mustang conv with a 289 motor ,, i put mine around 2015 it,, the car is parked under a car port with car cover .,, i do drive it up he car up street ,, always started up ,, then i noticed started loosing power in the motor ,, then when i started it again the car would not idle and stay running unless you had the motor at higher throttle ,, then today i went to start the car just only cranked over ,, the motor is fairly new . ,, i did break the motor in ,, now it wont start ,, the spark plugs looked good and the spark plug wires only 6 months old, it died theres no spark before it was getting harder and to start,,,, my friend recomend a diiffernt distribuator with the built in coil,,, FORD Small Block 221,260,289 & 302 BLACK HEI Distributor + Spark Plug wires USA on ebay my friend bought one,,,,, should i just buy the orginal points or upgrade to a hei

Maybe you got a bad unit or you did something that fried the circuit when you installed it. It sounds like you were not running 12 volts into the Pertronix unit. Did you check the voltage going to the unit ? Did you run the hot lead directly from a 12 volt source or did you run the hot lead from your coil. The Pertronics unit MUST have a hot feed of no less than 12 volts in order to operate properly. I installed the Pertronics kit on my 1969 F-250 with the original FE 390 engine with a Jasper class II bracket racing rebuild in 2008 and the truck has been running perfectly, on the street and strip, with no problems whatsoever, for the last 14 years.

One big thing is if your coil is resisted to 6v then goes 12v once running, if so that will kill the pertronix quick, cause all types of problems, very important to make sure your coil line is 12v with no resistors before you run pertronix. Volt meter tells you if your stock power to coil has a resistor in path, food for thought

@@williamcrazylacyfurmage9953 yes, but sometimes your power lead from the keyed ignition can have a resistor in path that many miss which cooks these fast..

Pertronix only sucks when you don’t know what you’re doing .. Ditch the resistor .. pertronix needs 12V. And the ground must be solid .. run another ground from the distributor body if you need to. You need to research before you install ..
