Most people don't let their cats out in the US because we have a LOT of predators. Coyotes, raccoons, (carries rabies a lot if the time) hawks, eagles, owls, bobcats, cougars will hunt and kill cats. I had a friend who had their cat killed by coyotes and one of the cats from the house I live in was killed by some animal one night right here in the yard. Now as to outside only cats. Out in the country they are known as barn cats. They are kept outside to keep the rodent population under control. Most people don't get to attached to their barn cats. Because they live in a really dangerous environment. It's not uncommon for a working farm to have a bunch of cats. They love them and take care of them but they try not to get too attached. Like you said declawing is barbaric. I would never do it. I also push my State to make it illegal as well. My cats are inside cats. (though one REALLY wants to go outside)

Okay, so it is better to not rescue a cat so it can keep all its claws but in effect leave it to be a victim to the elements and predators outside and watch it be mother or father of dozens of offsprings thay will contribute to the population problem. Smart move ! I've had cats all my life and had their front paws declawed so at least I had the decency to give them a happy and uneventful life. But you go ahead, do nothing and contribute to the growing population of cats of more than 96 millions in USA (2017). Certainly that number does not include millions of stray cats. But go ahead with your elastic sense of morality,... It's your prerogative but I certainly do not share it !

@@daltonx6177 What Enzo said. Other than that, what exactly does "leave it to be a victim to the elements and predators outside" mean? A cat is by definition a predator, and a very successful one. If at some point the human race disappears for whatever reason, be sure cats will still be there, dogs will not. Of course I am not talking about those highly individualized special races... normal cats! We have a program in basically all over Europe where vets are gelding stray cats for free to avoid them mass-producing more stray cats, so if that is the only reason you got for this animal abuse, please consider that there ARE valid other choices.

My parents-in-law were invited at their friends house to have dinner with them and they sat together around the dining table when suddenly the doorbell rang. First reaction to this was „oh did you expect some more people to come and join us this evening?“ Answer was: „No, it‘s just the cat - she wants to come in“. So they were completely weirded out 🤪 Turned out that family installed an electrical circuit with a battery and a bell inside and a wooden board outside and they trained the cat - if it wants to come in - to sit on that board so it closes circuit and activates the doorbell. And then it’s time to just wait for the hooman staff to let her majesty pass - and see: it works all the time! 😁

What? You don't trust your cat with Keys? LOL! We had an indoor/outdoor cat and we eventually progressed through a series of cat doors, starting with a completely uncontrolled door (which invited in some unwelcome visitors, including a racoon), to a door you could set to IN or OUT depending on the time of day to a completely automated door with a keyfob on the collar what would just let him in or out without any intervention on our part according to a daily schedule. Alas, the suburban landscape has gotten rougher with Fisher-cats and coy-wolves (and I'm talking Suburban Boston here) that an outdoor cat of any kind is, unfortunately, not one you want to get too fond of, because he or she is no longer the top predator.

Many years ago I adopted a cat from a shelter and after I'd had him a couple months I noticed he was limping. Upon examining his paws closely (he was VERY protective of his paws) I saw that most of his claws were missing -- I knew this already -- but that some of them were still there but growing in strange directions. I immediately took him to my vet, who looked at his paws and said the declawing had been botched and it would need to be re-done. I felt awful, but there was nothing else to do, and in he went. When I picked my cat up the following day I met with the vet and he told me what to expect with the recovery, what would be required to care for him, etc. I asked how the procedure went, and the vet became angry and said whoever did it the first time was "a butcher." :( People, please don't declaw your cats.

The extent of furniture damage can be considerably reduced by using a scratching tree.
@mickbacon8542
@mickbacon8542 3 жыл бұрын
True, my understanding is that the reason for the scratching behaviour is partly to do with keeping the claws sharp. In scratching they remove a thin sliver of the claw (akin to us trimming our nails). A scratching post (as we call them in the UK) is much more effective for this than general furniture and the cat will naturally use the post in preference.

My experience was a completely different one. When I was a kid, I and my parents found a newborn cat in the streets of Malcesine, Italy. We took her with us back to Austria. While growing up she turned out to become a real monster - I mean a real sociopathic beast. She spared no human, animal or object, always trying to make the greatest damage possible with her Wolverine-like claws. And of course she didn't spare the furniture either. So my mother bought her a scratching tree. Our cat's reaction obviously was just like: "Now you think you can outsmart me. Ahhh, oookay..." Then things went even worse. She never payed heed to the tree, but ruined even more furniture as she had done before. I'd say, just out of pure malice.😁 Nevertheless we loved her interestingly "cruel" but strong and wild character, she grew old gracefully - as a dictator, of course -, died at the age of 17, and I gave her a great funeral in the garden. Rest in peace, crazy Federica (nickname: Fritzi)!❤

I think it depends on the cat. They can have drastically different personalities and habits. My roommate's cat destroys everything, even though my roommate has bought him a lot of toys and scratching posts. He just likes doing things he knows he isn't allowed to do, like a toddler. Then he tries to test how much he can do it over and over until he gets in trouble. My cat on the other hand ONLY scratches his scratching post, and has never tried scratching anything else. He started as an outdoor cat because we adopted him from the streets, then as he got older he spent more and more time inside, and now he's 100% an indoor cat- so maybe that's part of why he never scratches our furniture. But he also never tries to do anything he knows he shouldn't, like jumping onto the table. He's just a well-behaved little guy who loves to cuddle. So yeah, I think depending on the cat you can have a completely different experience with the claws

I skimmed through the responses before making this one. I am in my 60's so age may have something to do with all of this. Growing up, I had rarely heard of an "indoor" cat. Cats were pets that ruled the home and were let in and out as they pleased, their human being on hand to feed them, serve as their doorman, and keep the litter box clean. Indoor cats became more prevalent as traffic got worse and more was learned about infectious diseases between cats.I started keeping my cats indoors in the late 90's both for their safety and to keep fleas out of my home. I first came across a declawed kitty in my 20's, the woman did it to protect her furniture, and at that first introduction I looked into it. When I found it wasn't just the claw being removed I was disgusted at the idea.I believe that it is illegal in some states now but I'm not positive. Furniture is nice and all but it's not a living family mamber.

In my American experience, "outdoor cats" are typical on farms. They help to keep the mice away from the animal feed, but also tend to get lice, ticks, and other nasty stuff you do NOT want in your house. I grew up in a rural area and we let our cats be indoor and outdoor, as they were much happier this way. I lost probably 10 cats growing up and we believe this to be due to coyotes, owls, hawks, or other nocturnal hunters. For this reason, we began keeping our cats indoor at night, and would you believe it, they've lived 2x as long! I don't know about Germany, but in the USA there are a lot of predators that will eat cats.
@Geckotape

I'd be terrified to let my cats out in a US area with predators. Here it's fine. I am worried a car will get my boy somedays, but all the predators otherwise (foxes, owls, hawks, martens) in the area are about his size. They don't fight with each other, he just brawls with other cats. There isn't much traffic and he has always been an in/outdoors cat, so it doesn't feel right taking this away from him. Also hear a lot of americans saying the cats keep getting all the birds, but while my boy does very occasionally indeed catch a careless bird, he mostly brings home shrews and mice. I have a vegetable garden behind the house and plan on eventually having chickens, so keeping rodents in check is actually a welcome service, albeit it adds to the vet costs a bit because of frequent deworming.

@@jacobvriesema6633 the bird population here in Germany is dwindling too. And while cats may play some role (not sure about this, but it does feel like cats hunt rodents over birds to me), the larger problem is that with industrialized farming there simply isn't enough food to support the bird populations of earlier decades. Insects disappearing is a huge problem for birds. Ten years ago if I drove 2 hours at night from the city to my dad, I could barely see out of my windshield in my car anymore with all the dead moths and mosquitos squashed on it on the autobahn. Now you hit nearly nothing and I can't even remember the last time I had to clean my windshield because of too much insect guts.

We had plenty of furniture damage and sometimes got scratched ourselves, but the idea of declawing one of our cats was never even considered.

We've only recently had to start considering this too. I've lived in the SF Bay Area my whole life (grew up in the East Bay, lived on the peninsula for the last 10 years). Not so much of a big deal now that the pandemic is letting up, but when it first started and the area was a ghost town due to everyone staying in and only venturing out when absolutely necessary, the coyotes started getting pretty bold and would wonder the streets at night. Luckily I life on a cul-de-sac and the coyotes never found their way up here and the cats really only stay on this street, so they were safe. We still tried to keep them in at night after we started hearing the coyotes though.

I'm Australian. There is a strong movement in Australia to get cat owners to keep their pets inside at night, and put a bell on the collar as well, to give potential prey a fair chance at escape. Cats are voracious predators in Australia and many of our smaller native creatures look like a snack to a cat roaming about at night. So most people dont let their cats out at night and the Department of Parks and Wildlife is actively encouraging cat owners to keep them in after dusk.

For the indoor-outdoor thing, I’ve found that to be highly regionally-dependent. I currently live in the Chicago area, and it’s actually against our city’s pet ordinance to allow any cats or dogs loose outside without a leash. If you do that, a neighbor or the police can legally just take the pet to the nearest shelter.

I remember a rich (Heiress Level), elderly woman -- 18 years ago -- who wanted a cat to go with the furniture. She held a kitten, walked around with it, and said, "I'll take her!" When they started to schedule the cat for declawing, she exclaimed, "Why on Earth would I ever want that?" The store shelter had assumed with her fancy house and expensive furniture, she would. She exclaimed, "That's horrible! Would you snip the tips off your grandchild's fingers so they don't mar the coffee table?" She went on a 15-minute lecture of how people think of cats as accessories. Her reason for matching the cat to the furniture and room was to give the cat a sense of camouflage. And she stated that as long as you provide poles, and actually watch and raise your cats, your furniture would remain unharmed. She was simply aghast at the thought of people still declawing cats. And all her cats were indoor cats. As for outdoors, mine were also always indoors. Too many running nigh feral, and I didn't want mine catching FIDS, Feluk, Distemper -- yes, they still had all their vaccinations -- or possibly eaten by the many predators we find here in New England, which have no qualms about venturing into the suburbs, let alone urban areas. In the more rural areas, people do take care of both their barn owls or their barn cats. You only have one kind, usually, not both, for obvious cross-predatory reasons. My cats were family. I miss them now. Their personalities, not the fur. But a cat is a great pet to adopt, be it a kitten, of a fully grown adult cat.

The anti-declawing movement started in the US maybe 20 years ago. Before that, it was encouraged by vets and most Americans didn't realize how cruel it was to cats--getting your cat declawed was considered the norm and was done when you had them spayed/neutered. I had declawed cats growing up but would never declaw one now (though I have adopted cats who have been declawed by previous owners). That said, a lot of Americans still don't realize how bad it is for the cat. It takes away their natural defense, gives them arthritis, and in some cats causes aggressive biting. Growing up in the American South, we had indoor/outdoor cats. However, my vets have always encouraged indoor only given the prevalence of fleas, ticks, and other insects outdoors. Indoor only cats require fewer shots and tend to live longer. Now that I'm in the city, mine are indoor only. In my experience, most outdoor only cats are either 1) strays that have been informally adopted or 2) semi-feral barn cats/farm cats in rural areas. People don't let them in because they can't behave in the house and because of fleas. Please excuse my very long crazy cat lady response :-).

That's the story with my 1st cat. It was in the 90's and when I took her to the vet to get her fixed, the vet offered to declaw her at the same time. He was so casual about it I had no idea it was a bad thing. Kitty lived to be 17 but she was always a biter. I regret the declawing, but I was young and thought the vet knew best. That vet retired just a few years later. I think declawing is a generational and educational issue. I wonder when other countries started banning declawing.

Hi Felicia! Nice to "meet" you! I recently stumbled on your channel and I can't stop watching! I am of German descent and have been to Germany myself over 40 years ago but hey, I was still there as a kid! I actually landed in Frankfurt and my uncle and cousin came to get us and took us to a smaller city called Bielefeld (spelling?). I remember how beautiful it was and have fond memories of my time there. It was definitely an interesting experience. Anyway, I digress! I am a cat lover too and have 21 adults cats, 3 of which are strictly indoor and NOT declawed. The rest are feral and stray cats who live strictly outdoors and I also have 6 kittens that are 12 weeks old today (7-22-21). I am 100% against declawing a cat and could never imagine harming one of my babies like that. I have damaged furniture in the house because my female indoor cat doesn't like scratching posts, she finds the furniture fabric much more suited to her feline tastes and likes to do her manicures on our expensive recliner instead. I knew this when I got her and her brothers, they were rescues, and I just dealt with it. She knows she is not supposed to do that but she's a sneaky girl and does it anyway when we're not looking LOL. Despite the damage to the chair, I could never imagine declawing her over that. None of my indoor cats have ever been aggressive with me or anyone else, the outdoor cats are mostly friendly with me and in the 10 years I've been doing rescue for strays and ferals, I've really only been badly attacked once and that was last Spring when one of my males who was not neutered yet, was searching for a female. There were other males cats around and he also is a Siamese so he has that temperment that comes with the breed and he would have killed the other cat he was attacking if I had not stepped in. I ended up getting injured and needed medical care because of it but I still love him and would never consider declawing him over that. He will remain with me until the time comes to let him go to the Rainbow Bridge. Until then, he and all my other cats will keep their claws and do as they please with them. Nothing is worth hurting a cat and doing bodily harm to them. Bless you for adopting your adorable kitty and giving her the home she was used to after your roommate moved out. I'm sure she is very happy with you! Thank you for sharing your interesting experiences between Germany and the US. I am fascinated and really enjoy your channel!

I have an older (initially indoor) cat that decided the first spring at our current residence that she wants to be outside on warm days. We initially chased her down and brought her back inside but after a while, I just said "Fine, go outside. You know where the house is." And she came back by dinner time! Let her do half and half when the weather is nice.

Have probably had over 12 cats during the last 30 years. A couple were strays the stayed after we gave them some food. When we lived in a neighborhood, the cats were indoor/outdoor cats. One of the strays had been declawed and he seemed to be able to get by outside very well. I know some folks feel like they need to keep their cats indoors if the cat has been declawed as the declawed cat would have a disadvantage if it gets into a fight with another animal. By the way, the declawed cat could jump very well and didn't seem to have any problems walking along the top of the fence. When we moved to a more rural house, we decided to keep all the cats inside all the time. Our reasoning is that there are both coyotes and lots of hawks that might prey on the cats and the house does not have much vegetation where the cats might seek refuge. Most of the cats don't seem to care but lately, one of our cats keeps darting outside. However, he only wants to chew on some grass and doesn't run away so he is easily retrieved. Once I found out what it was entailed with declawing a cat, I decided I would never have that done. Have plenty of scratching posts for the cats and haven't had many problems. A cat (or two) did scratch up some molding by a door in one room but they stopped and it has never been a real probem.

We trim our little lady’s front claws once a week and her back claws every two weeks. She only scratches when her claws are getting too long, which is normally a sign to us that we accidentally skipped a trimming. If she were to ruin something, it would be our fault for not keeping her claws at a length which she finds comfortable. We are fortunate enough to have a very agreeable cat who doesn’t even need to be held for a claw trimming. Sometimes she doesn’t even wake up all the way 😂

I trim my cat's claws because if left long and sharp he hurts me when he jumps or walks on me or makes biscuits. He cannot help it. Trimming blunts the claws so less pain for me and more pleasant interaction with mr whiskers. Trimming also protects my furniture. Long claws can also get stuck on fabrics. He is indoor only and short claws are good enough for scratch posts and climbing a cat tree. I know cats whose claws are not trimmed because they go outside and "should be able to defend themselves" but the cats are not nice to hold because they are so prickly. One of the cats is really social and likes cuddling so it is a pity. I keep an eye on their claws when I visit so that if one ever grew a full circle I could trim it before it grows into the toe.

I grew up with cats too. My parents declawed their cats partially because of furniture but they also said it was to protect me and siblings especially when we were little. When I was young I was playing a little rough with my cat and she scratched a part of my face and was close to my eye. Our vet at the time did NOT explain how the declawing process worked, we thought it was just the surgical removal of the claw itself. It wasnt until years later that we learned the truth and were horrified. I currently have a cat and he is not declawed and I'm happy I never did. As to why cats can be only indoors, my first cat was a stray for about a year in NYC when my mom found her. She was an indoor and outdoor cat but because we lived in a wooded area where there are a lot of deer, she ended up getting lyme disease from a tick. It is one of the things that she ultimately died from and since then my parents, and myself, have not let our cats outside. Great video, sorry for the three year later response.

Having an only outdoor cat is a weird thing to most Americans I would think. It certain is to me. I grew up in a condo that had a cat door so our cats were always in/out and thankfully found places to poop/pee outside which was fabulous. When I moved out and lived in apartments where I couldn't install a cat door, my cat was an indoor cat only until I finally moved into my own place and could give him a door. We recently made friends with a cat from across the street who seems to live entirely outside. We found out he belongs to an Armenian family and we figured that was a normal thing in that culture? @Bruna Pixie Removing toes, testicles, tails, uteri, etc. isn't cruel, as it's done under anesthesia. Afterwards the animal might be in pain for a week or so, but especially compared to the numerous added years of luxurious life domestic pets enjoy, one week of pain's nothing. Further, in the case if declawing, they probably get drugs to reduce or eliminate pain completely. Further, quality of life after spaying or neutering is improved for both the pet and owner. Animals don't wander far from home looking for sex, thereby risking being attacked by dogs, hit by cars, picked up by animal control, and adding to the feral cat population. That is, which increases predation on songbirds. (Well-fed housecats aren't a significant threat.) Also, animals wanting sex are bold, more likely to make noise, get in fights, and spray stinky urine on doors, tires, walls, and even inside your home. Cats and dogs can be trained. If your cats still scratch door jambs, provide them a designated scratching post. Maybe spread catnip on it but definitely praise them after they use it (not during or they might think you're scolding them at first). Also, when they scratch on a door jamb or other inappropriate place, scold them sternly and loudly and come after them in a frightening fashion (never hit them, though). Another option is to spray them with water from a squirt bottle. Administer this correction EVERY TIME you see them do it. If you don't do it every time it will take substantially longer for the cat to figure out what's okay and not okay behavior. After a couple weeks of this your cats will know what displeases you and will likely never do it again. If they do spray inappropriately thereafter, it will likely be the result of a new stressor introduced into their environment or, especially if the cat is older, a developing health problem.

Even if some emerging research indicates a castrated animal might be at slightly-greater risk of developing some cancers that prevent them from living an extra year or two, it's likely not worth the numerous and significant disadvantages suffered by pet owners every day from not spaying or neutering their pets. Those are, the associated pet nuisance behavior and the time, money, and emotional bond lost between pet and owner in the long run. Someone considered getting their dogs vocal cords snipped?!?! WHAT THE FUCK? I'm not a dog person (they actually scare me since I was attacked by one when I was 4), but that's just plain cruelty there. I would have asked her (seriously) how she would have enjoyed getting instruments jammed down her throat in an effort to silence her permanently so she couldn't talk and had to learn ASL. Then told her something along the lines of "if you wouldn't want it done to you, why would you even consider doing it to a dog?"

This isn't the most disturbing instance I've heard of this. I was told of a man who had his Doberman Pinscher's vocal cords removed so that when a thief might break into his suburban home he would never here the attack coming. Chilling.

I've owned three cats in the last 40 or so years, two were declawed, but they came to me as strays that way, both were indoor/outdoor type cats, both refused to be kept inside. The first one I had for 17 years, with no idea how old she was when I found her, the second cat was abandoned by a neighbor, I had her for 13 years, and that one was not declawed and never left the house. She wouldn't even try to go outside, she would run from the door when it opened. She never touched the furniture or did any damage but required a litter box. The last cat was declawed when she showed up, she didn't like being inside and was a bit of a fighter outside. The lack of front claws never seemed to hinder her hunting or fighting skils. That one went out during the day and in at night and never used a little box inside. I had that cat for 23 years and she was no kitten when she showed up here. Declawing any animal is frowned upon here but not illegal that I know of. I would NEVER do it to an animal. A well adjusted, well trained animal will not damage your house. At the present time, this neighborhood has a half dozen stray or wild cats, a few which seem to hang around my house. They feed themselves for the most part, they won't take food from people and don't beg. A few will come to me if I sit down and let them come to me, but they're not super friendly but not aggressive either. They do kill a lot of rodents, mostly field mice, rats, moles, voles, and the occasional rabbit, squirrel or bird as well. From what I've seen the rabbits take the biggest hit with cats around outside. So do parked cars as they tend to walk or sleep on top of parked cars, especially if the hood is warm. Traffic here isn't the biggest threat to an outside cat these days, its mostly coyotes, hawks, the occasional eagle, and larger owls. Coyotes lately have become common sights around here in the past four or five years.

My cats always stay indoors and have all their claws. They stay inside because I live in a rural suburban area where there are many foxes and racoons. Additionally, some people just don't like cats so it's just plain safer to keep them in and they don't seem to mind.
