This story really gets to me for not just the creepy levels it can reach but just the overall levels of sadness it brings when you think on the concept of death & loss.

I don’t think King ever stated if the Creeds could shine, part of the vagueness to his stories is that there are other forces guiding/corralling peoples lives like the Wendigo does. She and her father may show signs, some readers even say Rachel shows signs of it.

wait but this is reminding me of a very specific amazing college essay i read once, (i believe) called "love and loss in pet semetary", and i recall something like coe college. ive had difficulties finding it lately. it has a bit about huck finn, if that also helps? at any rate, it points out some correlations and works out how Louise felt some resentment to his family. hence why he was so upset about Church "losing his manhood" - he felt stifled being in his relationship with his family. a mans heart is stonier, judd says. this is why he so totally agrees with Ellie's rage against God and death. That's why she's the only survivor. Because if you cling to immortality because of a fear of death, you'll corrupt th things you love. it's always clung to my mind.

Yep, that’s truly what ruined everything. It was b/c they didn’t want to confront and deal w/ death; not Rachel b/c of her sister and not Louis b/c he “promised” Ellie that fixing the cat was going to solve all the problems. Should’ve told her doesn’t matter _how_ we fix the cat, shit happens. Death will always happen, if not on the road, than sooner or later, b/c it’s a part of life.

Pet Sematary was my 1st King's novel, I first read it when I was 12, 33 years ago. I will never ever forget how I felt reading the last page of the book: I was feeling empty, not sad or happy, just.... empty (I can't explain this feeling). Decades later and after having re-read the novel a couple times (maybe 6? 7?) I think I understand now why they say this is the most terrifying novel written by the master King: it's not greed, vengeance, hatred, jealousy driving the main character, I believe it's because hope is the force behind Louis' actions. Louis hopes he can make it right,that he can fix an unspeakable tragedy, instead dooming himself, his family and all around him in the process. Pet sematary is one of the few stories I would love Master King to revisit (the remaining vampires left "alive" in 'Salem's Lot is another) and tell us what was made of Rachel, Ellie, the sauer burial ground..... Maybe someday we are send back to Ludlow, maybe this never happens, but all I can do is.... hope.

So true. When you see him go through all the rationalizations in his mind about how _this_ time could be different… Makes me really wonder, even w/ all the warnings and the history of it not going well…all the reasons you *know* this is not a good idea, would any of us do any different than Louis?? If you thought that there was the slightest _chance…_ that, on the other side of it, you could have your baby in your arms again like before?… You can scream at Louis through the screen, but really would you do any differently? This really is King’s scariest work.
@kakolicht
@kakolicht 5 ай бұрын
@@attitudeproblem6462 ,that line around the end of the book when Paskow's ghost tries to help Louis (to save Louis actually) one last time before fading, to which Louis (by that time gone completely insane holding Rachel's dead body in his arms) answers "this time will be different, she just died, she will come back just as she was" (something like that if I'm remembering and translating the quotes correctly from my native Brazilian language). After going through so mach loss, pain and tragedy, like you said "would any of us do any different than Louis"? I don't think so.
@attitudeproblem6462
@attitudeproblem6462 5 ай бұрын
@@kakolicht I think that’s the reason why I also love “1922” so much: these are stories that teach you to just let some things lie. In both cases, the main characters rationalize that if they commit this _one act,_ it’ll “fix” everything… And it only ends up *destroying everything* w/ rippling effects that touch people even _outside_ of their family.🤦🏾‍♀️

For real though, an adaptation of “Carrie” done as a mixed media podcast and fauxumentary about the “Chamberlain High Prom Incident” would be amazing, plus paying tribute to the format of the original novella. You could have a host who’s taking the angle that a notoriously bullied and ostracised student is being scapegoated for the tragedy when she herself was found dead with her own mother later that night, and then gradually finds out about the telekinesis rumours and evidence…

Great story, and addition to an amazing book. I’ve always found the ending pretty chilling - Louis’ colleague looking at him taking his wife over the Semetary ‘threshold’, a mad glint in his eye. Never going to end too well for old Lewis! FYI another amazing, less known novel featuring the Wendigo/Windigo is ‘Where the Chill Waits’ by T Chris Martindale, it really is excellent. He does briefly make reference to PS in 'Insomnia.' It's been awhile since I read it (and it's a long book), but I remember the malevolent entity in the story having a collection of artifacts squirreled away, and one of them I'm pretty sure was Gage's sneaker. I also don't remember which story it was but I also remember King making a brief reference to Ludlow, Maine, but those are the only two instances that come to mind.
