John Havlicek was my camp counselor, We hung out with him every day. We were taught rebounding by Wes Unseld one day, and dribbling and passing by Pete Maravich another. I won the camp ping pong title and Dave Cowens then beat me easily. He was a big dude, especially to a 12 year old. Sadly, Dave is the only one living today. These were truly some of the nicest people I ever met in my life.

John Havlichek was the first player I ever wrote to that sent an autographed photo back. I wrote to Havlichek and Redd Foxx, my favorite people at that time in my young life. I fell in love with Hondo and Paul Westphal on June 4 1976, that triple ot game made me a basketball fan from that day forward. So you got to hang with the legends and look Pete Maravich in the eyes, play Cowens in ping pong, that is absolutely awesome. Unseld, Big E, Chenier, Dandridge, Grevey that was a great, smart basketball team and the JoJo, Hondo, Cowens, Charlie Scott, Silas, Nelson Celtics, were just excellent, I loved Hondo and Charlie Scott so much.
@TheBent1392 жыл бұрын
@@tonygajate5780 I saw Charlie Scott play numerous times. I grew up on Tobacco Road and my parents taught at North Carolina and N.C. State, so we went to a lot of games. While players and coaches today run camps I doubt there is similar interaction with the campers.

Imagine what Pete's dribbling skills would be like with the soft modern rules. In Pete's day you couldn't put your hand on the side of the ball a la Iverson to cross over, the hand had to be on top of the ball and the refs didn't hesitate to call "carrying". Pete was still amazing even with the stricter rules. 💪

🧨🧨 1973- “PISTOL” PETE MARAVICH* IN HIS 1st NBA ALL-STAR GAME‼️ *When Pete Maravich left LSU, in 1970, he was the ONLY college player in history to ever be offered contracts from; 1) the NBA, 2) the ABA, AND 3) the Harlem Globetrotters (and also as the FIRST WHITE PLAYER to ever be offered a contract from them.) As impressive as his ball handling and passing skills were to merit attention from the Harlem Globetrotters, Maravich’s scoring abilities were even better! Drafted #1 by the Atlanta Hawks in the 1970 NBA draft after averaging 44+ points/game over his ENTIRE LSU college career; even BEFORE THE 3-POINT SHOT WAS INTRODUCED‼️ (There are very few basketball records destined to stand forever. Yet more than ½ century later, MARAVICH’S COLLEGIATE SCORING RECORD STILL STANDS AND STILL SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE TO DUPLICATE. Even more, imagine what his per game average MIGHT have been with a 3-point shot rule combined with Maravich’s legendary long distance shooting accuracy. Maravich always claimed when speaking publicly that ALL his records would eventually be broken, but most college basketball experts argue otherwise, and claim his record will stand forever even WITHOUT adjusting for the hypothetical 3-pointers.
