The Boston Celtics accomplished a rarity in basketball in this game when all five starters scored 20 or more points.
With Larry Bird leading the way with 26 points, Danny Ainge collecting 23, Dennis Johnson and Robert Parish 21 each and Kevin McHale 20, the Celtics defeated the Milwaukee Bucks, 122-111, at the Boston Garden to take a 2-0 lead in best-of-seven series.
It was the 38th straight home victory for the Celtics.

I was fortunate to attend many Larry Bird games at the Boston Garden & the one thing I remember is how fast Bird & the Celtics moved, in the blink of an eye a defensive rebound turned into a basket on the other end.

This is how basketball games should be played. When I play pick-up games, I wanted to play with players who play like the '86 Celtics or the spurs now. I hate playing with players who thinks that they're making mix tapes

1:09 That was intended as a backboard pass. DJ and Bird have done that from time to time in a half court situation.
@SteveGellerMusic
@SteveGellerMusic 8 жыл бұрын
+jp3813 I don't think so, I think it was intended as an outlet for Bird, who was ahead of the field, and it was overthrown. They never attempted a backboard-assist pass from beyond about 25 feet in years of playing together--there was no reason to attempt an 80-foot play here.
@jp3813
@jp3813 8 жыл бұрын
Steve G There's a first time for everything. I think DJ was worried about the defenders near Bird. If that was a regular outlet, it would've likely been intercepted. You can see Larry box out for it, and the ball would've bounced to him if it didn't hit the rim.
@SteveGellerMusic
@SteveGellerMusic 8 жыл бұрын
***** There's no way to know, but I perceive Bird as boxing out because he can see the trajectory of the ball, and that it is likely to hit something and ricochet back down to him, which doesn't necessarily show evidence of an intentional pass-play.

The depth of talent in the NBA during this time was incredible. The Eastern conference was loaded with great teams that never made it to the finals because of the difficulty of just getting past the second round of the playoffs. In comparison, the Lakers had it easy with only one or two serious contenders in any year.

After this game, the Boston Globe wrote an article about how the Garden fans had become complacent since they won all the time so easily. They cited the Dennis Johnson 80-foot shot as "the spectacular event that the fans had to see in order to get invested in a game nowadays."

Awesome upload, gracias. This Celtics team combined great talent with the ultimate in team basketball, sharing the ball. For that reason I think it's the best team ever. My other fave team ever was the Laker team that won the title with West and Wilt. That Laker team won 33 in a row and 69 total games and West led the NBA in assists that year and averaged over 25 a game.

Amazing the difference between the 86 and 87 celtics. 86 everything came so easy and 87 was such a struggle. They actually should've lost to the bucks in 87 but manned up finally in the last 5 minutes of game 7. Shouldn't have gone past 5 games if Boston knew how to win on the road after the 2nd half of 87 Never were the same after 86.

The '87 team were absolute warriors though...all the injuries, including McHale playing the playoffs on a broken foot, no depth and starters played ridiculous minutes...we swept Chicago and went up 3-1 on Bucks when injuries kicked in and epic game 7 vs Milwaukee then epic series vs Detroit, Bird steal in game 5 and game 7 down to the wire...the finals vs Lakers came down to that game 4 hook by Magic....I have always felt like if Bird hits last shot we win that series but no matter what that team was absolutely galant to get that far and went out on their shields like champions. Maybe if we're good when we die we will get to replay that series with the Celtics healthy.

87 team could have possibly been as good as 86 if Wedman and Walton had not gotten injured. Plus the death of Len Bias was a severe blow that set the franchise back many years. Reggie Lewis death a few years later hurt as well.
