ThePowerStacks if I'm not mistaken until Manfred became commissioner, the Reds were not even permitted to officially retire his number or induct him into their own Hall of Fame. (They unofficially didn't issue his number 14 except briefly to his son when he had the stint in the majors, but were barred from officially recognizing him in that way.) I think Manfred eased some of those restrictions but stopped short of actually reinstating Rose. Though he did, at the same time as he officially denied Rose's reinstatement request, also suggest that he believes the Hall of Fame is a separate question and implied that he doesn't necessarily agree that the Hall shouldn't be able to at least put him on the ballot. But that's actually a decision over which the Hall of Fame has its own discretion.

When you bet against your team, you are a traitor who will give a lackluster effort in the game, and when you're the player manager as he was, you also have the opportunity to control the outcome substantially by mismanaging your team. Neither of which this guy ever did. Obviously some of the comments are from people not familiar with his play and didn't see him throughout his career. I'm not saying he didn't bet on baseball, but no way in hell did he ever bet against himself or his team and try to throw a game. Even before all his trouble with betting and his ban; as a kid, I loved the way he played the game; and at the beginning of a season, if I had a choice in picking my uniform and number 14 was available in my size; I always chose it. Was he my role model for all things outside of baseball? No. I had a Mom and Dad that were role models as well as other relatives. Did I appreciate the way he played the game and did I want to play like Pete Rose? Absolutely! I do hope he makes the Hall of Fame eventually.

He's a good man who made a mistake, but still loves the game and has a lot to contribute to it. Saw him in San Francisco in 2015 watching a little league girls team putting their cleats on in the lobby and getting their gear ready to travel to their game. Rose was standing in the background among the hotel guests, but to himself. The smile and adoration he had on his face as he watched these little girls get excited about the same game he loved as a boy, was truly a beautiful thing to see. He would not only be a great ambassador for baseball, but he would also be a great ambassador for sports, redemption, hard work, and inclusion in general.

MLB trotted him out during the 2015 All-Star Game as one of the four greatest Reds of all time. If he's banned from baseball, then ban him from *everything* baseball. Mark McGwire was subpoenaed to testify in 2005, but didn't admit to using steroids until 2010. McGwire's working in baseball. Rose initially denied gambling in 1989, but, in 2004, he admitted to gambling only during his time as a manager. Just like he said, the stadium is on a *street named after him* and he's not welcome there. I can respect his position regarding the Hall of Fame, even though I don't agree with it. I would have never considered myself a Pete Rose fan, but, while he was a player, I respected the hell out of his competitiveness and his accomplishments during a time when players weren't getting the mega-million-dollar contracts players get today. Cobb retired in 1928 after playing 23 seasons. Rose broke Cobb's record in 1985--the record stood for 57 years--and he did it in his 22nd season, one year sooner. One of the many reasons I'm no longer a baseball fan today...
@ryanaltfillisch7155
@ryanaltfillisch7155 5 жыл бұрын
Rose may have broken the record in one less season (although your numbers are off as Cobb played 24 seasons and Rose broke the record in his 23rd season), but Rose broke the record in his 3,476th career game and his 15,550th career plate appearance (if going by the official MLB record; if going by the record everyone but MLB goes by you can knock 2 games and 9 plate appearances off that total). Cobb played in just 3,034 career games and had just 13,099 career plate appearances, so Rose did not accomplish the feat sooner than Cobb.

In 1968 I was 10 years old in the left field bleachers of Wrigley Field. The Cubs were playing the Reds it was the 11th inning one of the Reds came to bat ended up on 2nd. Stole third base and somehow made it home in order to win the game. I looked at my cousin and I said who was that guy? And he looked at me and he said that was Charlie Hustle. I'll never forget that moment when I saw real greatness on the field. Pete Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame. Don't rob him of that honor like they did with Ron Santo

Cincy still loves you. I truly think the reason why you aren't allowed in the box or clubhouse are most likely from higher than the Reds. Still remember chaperoning daughter's field trip to GABP. They have one single pink rose in the lication of that rose bed for the spot your record breaking hit landed. And one ball to represent each of your hits. It sucks, I know! I'm from Hamilton Pete , and I love all the Big Red Machine ! My first game was Crosley Feild bat day against the Cards 65 or 66 , I was 4 yrs old! I think you stole 2nd with a dive , Wow ! I got a Tony Perez Bat and he hit the only HR that day ! Reds won I believe 6 to 0 ! It was on from there ! I played most sports in school and city leagues ! But I always played Baseball ! Got 1st place trophies , Most Valuable trophies ! And game balls signed by my team ! My friends dad's thought I was great ! My dad , who took me to that Crosley game , became an alcoholic and never came to see me play , or urged me on ! I'd like to think that I could have been a special player , but I loved baseball nonetheless ! Here's how much ! My friends would get together for a pickup game , and low and behold we had no ball ! Playing was everything to me , so I got my game ball that my whole team signed , for 2 game winning catches , jumping to the limits of my ability , to snag line drives over my head in center Feild for out # 2 & 3 with men on 2nd & 3rd in the bottom of the final inning up by 1 run ! But we went and beat the hell out of that ball , because it was the only ball around ! And I don't and never have regretted it ! Peace-Out !

Every story of him being an outward racist and all-around asshole have been completely debunked as they were written by an author that has absolutely zero credibility and was fired from all of his journalism jobs for continually writing inaccurate stories. In fact, Cobb came from a long line of abolitionists in the south and welcomed the integration of baseball. Cobb wasn't a perfect person, but he was nowhere near as bad as the false narratives flying around say he is. Also, Rose was nowhere near the GOAT. Get out of here with your bullshit.
