True but with expansion, we have about 3-4 AAA teams in the MLB. Look at Carltons complete game average per year. No one comes close
@TooBokoo
@TooBokoo 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's really rose tinted glasses at all. I'm not even sure why this would be a controversial statement. Of course pitchers today could pitch in any time period. They have more high tech training and gear than players in the past every had. Even a low grade pitcher today could probably go back and smoke the batters in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, etc... Imagine a pitcher today.... years of training as a teenager, college play, getting to the MLB and having a dozen specialist coaches tweaking their mechanics, 30 infrared cameras filming their every delivery second to breakdown and analyze, custom cleats tailored by Nike to within one thousandth of an inch of their foot shape, hot tubs and ice tubs to soak in every night, high priced massage therapists to work their shoulder and arm every single day, vitamins and supplements up the a/ss, peds or otherwise, which you know plenty of pitchers are on... Now, send em back to the 1920s to pitch to Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Rogers Hornsby, Joe Sewell, Tris Speaker, etc... Guys who had a hunk of wood some amateur yanked out of a tree to hit with, shoes that are probably equivalent in comfort to someone wearing tap dancing shoes all day now, guys who all probably practiced an hour or two a day before each game and likely played no ball during a day off, and then went back to a normal job in the off season. LOL! Of course, pitchers now days could pitch to them and probably do an incredible job at it. Kind of an apples to oranges comparison. I can't believe anyone would make the argument a pitcher now days couldn't pitch in any era. Imagine saying a 2020 hockey player couldn't hang with a hockey team in the 1920s. LOL!
@biffalobull2335

Poorly Playing Retro problem is, today’s pitcher would go 6 innings before being yanked. In about 20 years the 300 win games milestone will be 200 to get into the HOF

@@bdub78dub90 he's saying players have a different mentality nowadays. The things that were routinely done back then are looked as weak now. Choking up on the bat these days might make you appear like a pussy. Protecting players from injuries i.e. breaking up a double play or a collision at home plate has taken the physicality aspect out. It's all about how much 💰 your going to make and for how many years you can make it. Sad state it's in these days.

I listen to Rose and find it interesting, but I also can't forget what he did. I read the Commissioner's report in short form. He did as manager, let the bookies know when to bet against the Reds and he did it by not betting ON the Reds when certain pitchers played. He admitted to statutory rape, it was confirmed he brought teenage girls into the dugout before games. The debt he owed to bookies was upwards of $500,00 and he let NJ mobsters into the dugout too. He also financed cocaine deals though he didn't personally do it, he just gave the money to feed his addiction from the profit. Here's the catch, he was offered a deal where he would get a suspension and go to rehab after apologizing publicly. The FBI no less were going to get his tax evasion charges dropped and get the NJ mobsters to forgive his debts to them. He refused and even tried to bully Bart Giamatti and Giamatti didn't back down so the American Baseball Icon was banned for life from baseball and spent 5 months in federal prison. He has continually lied and still does to this day. Pete Rose made a mockery of the integrity of honest baseball and is a POS. Here's a long read of some of his crimes. www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2015/03/21/rose-investigator-pete-belong-game/25112355/ Here's his sex with minors confession, low life bastard admitted it with one girl, but claimed she was 16, lying trash. www.nydailynews.com/sports/all-time-hits-leader-pete-rose-admits-sexual-tryst-teen-article-1.3372777

How are those things not macho?

Robert Mastroianni because the big macho power hitters who stand in the box watching their home runs for 3 minutes until they start their trot are above getting dirt on their uniforms snd sacrificing themselves for the team, looking like youre actually trying and working is undignified to them

I would associate macho with playing hard and tough. To me, breaking up a double play would be macho. But to each their own.

Everyone needs to understand what a lifetime ban means. It DOES NOT mean he is banned forever and it DOES NOT mean he will not be in the HOF. It means he will not be allowed in the HoF while he is alive, hence, LIFETIME ban. After he dies then he will be inducted posthumously. The point of the ban is to deny him the honor of membership in the HoF while he is alive. That's what it means. Just chill about him being in the HoF. He will get there eventually.

James M I agree, but you have to look at the whole history of the game. Baseball almost got destroyed by a gambling scandal 50 years earlier. They hired a judge as a commissioner and put all these rules in place to build confidence in the fan that it would never happen again. Rose has a few things going against him that are out of his control. 1- the commissioner that knows all the evidence and made the decision against Rose died a month after he got banned. Selig never wanted to reverse the dead man's ruling. 2- Rose lied excessively for 10 plus years before admitting what he did. It's not that I don't blame him, and I know he's a prideful person, but he lost a lot of credibility not admitting earlier instead of waiting till it became clear he wasn't going to be reinstated anytime soon.

Nice respectful Reply grigsolve, Don't see that often on comment pages, I'm disappointed in Pete Rose because it is fascinating and mesmerizing to hear him talk of intricate baseball strategy and apparently like most addicts the addiction is stronger than breathing ,sleeping and eating. in any event nice to have by someone with your respectful thoughtful insight

grigsolve You really capture it. The fact of gambling - even if on your own team -- and the decade long spit in your face arrogant lies did him in...He really did imo deserve to be punished most severely....but maybe now, so long ago, it could be revisited while he is alive still?

I would not give a pitcher the corners. Deal like Kofax etc. I've seen umps call strikes two feet outside. And get rid of that DH. Look at the strategy that is lost because of that screwball rule.
