Thanks Pete. I have an Akai MPK Mini MKII and an Akai MPD 18. Both return the message that these devices require too much power for my iOS devices (iPhone 6S, iPad mini 2, iPad Air 2 an regular 2017 iPad). When I use only the Apple USB to Lightening 3 with the charging port connected, both controllers work perfectly with all devices. Some here have said the USB to Lightening 3 only charges the iOS device but does not power the MIDI device. All I know is these controllers work perfectly with all my devices. Hope this is helpful.

Really? What an interesting observation.? I’ve always assumed and been led to believe that the USB3 only supplies power to the iOS device. What happens when you use the USB3 adapter with these but not plugged in to power?

Thanks for this video. I've got a weird situation whether my lightning port to usb is able to charge my iPad using the charge port on the connector, it can power USB devices such as my USB hub, but it will suddenly not accept any USB device to function on my iPad. This is a 2018 iPad with the latest iOS version 17.2 (The problem arose ahead of the update). It turns my alesis qx49 on without issue, but doesn't accept input, and it completely ignores my mic. These are items it has accepted for ages now, and randomly it has just stopped. Any ideas?

Yes to all of this - and for the uninitiated, Apple’s seemingly innocuous cables have a microchip in the lightning (small) end of that adaptor, the cable is in effect a dongle. For me I do all these things but the midi falls out sometimes, cleaning it with a toothbrush can help. Ports get dirty sometimes. If someone has other tips let me know.

Yeah, I use a toothpick actually to clean out ports and it tends to work well. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qLhpiLRhqciwnKM.html

I just know it works for me everyday. Here’s a possible explanation: perhaps while charging the iOS device it has access to enough power to power the controller. Either way you do the math it works and that’s all I care about. Another theory could be a difference between European, Down Under 220 DC and 120 AC IN America. Not an electrical engineer.

Yeah. If it works it works and sometimes it’s best to just be happy with that and move on! 👍

I’m having massive issues with making this work, hope someone can help me a little bit out here! I bought Apples Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter, and I’ve connected it the way it’s supposed to. My iPad (2018 version) has also installed the product, however my keyboard simply won’t turn on. It shines blue sometimes, for not even a second, as if it’s turning on but it just isn’t. What I find odd is that my keyboard works fine connected to my computer, but the even weirder thing is that it actually works perfectly with a knock off cable like the Apple adapter I got, but then the message pops up with the iPad not supporting this product. But I’ve managed to actually play for perharps 2 minutes with this knock off adapter. So why is it, it won’t even turn on with the apple adapter? I’ve tried the camera lightning kit too (the one with just one slot for the usb), then the whole too much power message pops up. The knock off one is actually like that one, just one slot. This doesn’t make sense to me. Hope someone got an idea. My keyboard is a Swissonic ControlKey 61 😄

Hi there. This sounds like a power issue. Sometimes the cheaper adapters will work for a while because they send through more power than they should - which is why thy eh eventually tend to stop working. The solution in most cases is to use a powered USB hub. You can then connect the hub to your iPad and to a power outlet which will provide ample power for any devices connected. Check out this video for more information. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l-BmrNiHxNy9mXk.html

Are you using a genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter? Some adapters just don’t work well in my experience.

Thanks a lot Pete for getting back to me ♥️The fact is it’s been plugged in to the computer even if I was not using it do I suppose it burned out ? I am not sure … also it was plugged in with the cable which was working perfectly before !

I have a USB hub but when i connect my Lightning cable with a USB port on it and i turn on my keyboard it says not compatible with this ipad and a message pops up and it says Apple is not supporting this equipment or something like that. I can only play for 1 minute and then the message pops up and i have to pull the lightning cable out of my ipad and then in to the ipad again. Its so annoying. How can i fix this???

Hey there. Are you using a genuine Apple Lightning to USB adapter? This is often the cause of issues like this. Here's a video with some more info - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p9pmjcarybvIhmg.html

I have a roland juno g with midi and apple lighting 3 usb with the app simply piano. It wont connect why is this? I mve used 3 different knock off lighting usb so i thought apple would fix it but it didnt work!

That's odd? I take it the keyboard sends standard MIDI and works with other devices when connected? The only other potential issue is power. Have you tried a powered USB hub? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nd1-pLlivJnKgIk.html

@@PeteJohnsMusic is that what I need? I was really scratching my head last night and ended up ordering just a plain old unpowered USB C splitter so I can plug the usb c data, a usbc power cable, then plug the entire thing into my keyboard. Do you think that will work?

Howdy. Yes, there seems to be some confusion around this and the power situation. I might need to do some more testing. My understanding is that it powers your iOS device but not any other connected devices.
