When the ethernet cable to connected to my thunderbolt dock, the internet is slower. When the ethernet cable is connected directly to my Thinkpad laptop, internet is faster. This is normal right?
@PeteJohnsMusic5 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Yes, because the Ethernet data is sharing he USB-C connection with power, video and other USB devices, you may see some reduction in speed. I haven’t noticed much difference however my internet connection in quite slow so it trends to be the bottleneck for speed.

Going to university in less than 2 months and up until now I was using a 12 year old desktop. Had a pretty tight budget, so I couldn't get the ThinkPad T480. There weren't that many reviews on the E580, which sucked, because it was a pretty good alternative & one in my price range. These videos helped a lot, so thanks! Unless I find something that has better specs, price, and durability (unlikely, right?) then I'm sticking with the E580! I hope it lasts me until the end of my program in 2023, haha.

Nice one! Yes, As you can tell from the videos I'm pretty happy with this purchase. Yes, I could get something lighter and more powerful for twice the cash, but for the specs I ended up with, I'm blown away by the value on the E580. Good luck with your study and I also hope whatever you choose will last you well! Thinkpads are pretty renowned for their reliability and longevity!

Yoga's aren't a bad piece of kit for study, if you ever need to reupgrade. Surfaces are the choice, but so expensive and litteral a pile of shit after 12 months as you cannot upgrade or even change the battery. Laptops are ALWAYS course dependant. As Medicine / Pharmacy the touch screen is a joy and cuts down on paper waste. The way most student condone paying for better kit, is by torrenting textbooks to afford the upgrade. Yoga's (most) work with USB-C docks. I scored my i7 Yoga (refurbished) from Grays Online for $600 with full warranty.

The documentation with the docking station is seriously poor. I was not completely sure how to use the USB cable that came in as it had a USB 2 adapter attached to it and the documentation made it sound as if using that connection would give video where as using USB-C would give power. Your video hit the mark showing USB-C does everything. Typing this on my laptop using the docking station with dual monitors. Not alot of fluff in your video, straight to the point, thanks man.

I would assume that they have used the same or an improved screen. It is really good actually. Not harsh or super bright so easy on the eyes and gold colour reproduction. The only small issue with the E580 is that the viewing angle is not very wide. Has only been an issue once when the family were crowded around the laptop watching a video, but for a single user it is excellent. Hope you enjoy your new machine as much as I have mine.

Some very good questions here which I'm not entirely sure on the answers to I'm afraid. I actually only have two monitors so can't really test a three monitor setup. Hi, I loved the video. I own an E580 myself also and I intend to purchase a docking station. However, my local Lenovo website (Belgium) tells me I should buy the ThinkPad Ultra USB 3.0 docking station. What is the difference between USB-C and USB 3.0? Thanks! P
@PeteJohnsMusic5 жыл бұрын
This is very strange? The USB 3.0 dock uses the USB 3 instead of the USB-C port to connect to the laptop. From what I can see, all variations of the E580 have a USB-C port so I can't see why they wouldn't support the USB-C docking station? The USB 3 would work, but it would be a little slower and I'm assuming it wouldn't do the power pass-through that the USB-C does (as the USB-C port acts as the power port on the E580). Apologies I can't be more help. This may be a question for Lenovo if you want to confirm it 100%.

@@PeteJohnsMusic Hi, Pete. Thanks for your answer. This actually clears it up. I think their docking station matching tool is wrong. My machine does have a USB-C port just like yours, so I'll buy the USB-C dock. Cheers!

I hate to nitpick, but you seem to be confusing USB standards. _USB 3.0_ is the protocol for data transfer (software level). _USB-C_ or _USB type C_ refers to the physical shape of the connector (hardware level). The larger USB port is actually called a _USB Type A_ port. Now as for your problem, it might be a bit late now, but somebody else might find this info useful. I agree with what Pete said already, but I might as well give you some extra info. As Pete said, the USB-C port is the only way to charge the E580, so a USB type A docking station wouldn't charge your device. Do bear in mind though that your docking station actually needs to support power delivery in order to charge the laptop, so make sure to check the specs. As for the transfer speeds, on the e580 the USB-C connector is, as far as I know, 3.1 gen 2 (up to 10 Gb/s) and the Type A ports are 3.1 gen 1 (up to 5 Gb/s). But I don't really see how that would make a noticeable difference in this sort of use case.

Thanks for the clarification. I’m always happy for someone with more knowledge than me to chime in. As I admitted in these videos, I’m an audio/video guy so my tech knowledge is quite limited these days. Hey, if you saw the first video I didn’t even know what a USB-C port was! I though it was some sort of proprietary connector. 😄 Thanks again.

Hi Pete! I’ve got two Samsung monitors and the Lenovo thinkpad dock and just recently bought the Lenovo ideapad Flex 5. I tried the steps you advised in the video but for some reason the monitors just aren’t being recognised! The dock is talking to the laptop somewhat because it’s picking up the mouse and keyboard…any idea why monitors are not recognised?
@PeteJohnsMusic3 жыл бұрын
Not sure sorry? Perhaps they are 4K monitors and not supported together? Have you tried one at a time? And have you confirmed the compatibility of the laptop with this dock?

Pete, what resolution are your screens? I want to make sure if this docking station would support two WQHD screens, before buying it
@PeteJohnsMusic6 жыл бұрын
My screens are 1920x1080. The docking station does state that it will not support two 4K screens due to the bandwidth of the video connection over USB-C.
@pppemo6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yeah I have seen that. Unfortunately it doesn't say anything about WQHD which is between FHD and UHD not to mention 4K :-)
@PeteJohnsMusic6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it would probably work, but not sure the performance would be amazing. It works really smoothly with the FHD screens but I don’t have any other resolutions to test it with sorry.

My laptop doesn’t have usb C port. I tried using a generic usb c to usb A cable instead but it doesnt seem to work. Is there any way i can connect the dock station to my laptop without a usb c port on the laptop?
@PeteJohnsMusic2 жыл бұрын
Hey there. You’ll likely need a USB-A hub instead as this model only supports USB-C laptops.

Good videos presentation. I could see one concern. I am working on t470 laptop Lenovo, I have only one charger. So I have connected to Lenovo dock so that extra accessories connection would not be disturbed. Like keyboard mouse internet cable. Currently after connecting the dock with laptop via USB. I am able to access all accessories but unable to charge my laptops. Could you plz guide me

Im thinking of buying a USB-C dock to connect all my peripherals (keyboard, mouse, headset and monitor. My laptop only has usb-c (no thunderbolt). Will there be any noticeable latency issues or delays when playing games? The reason why I wanted a docking station is so I can just leave all my peripherals connected to docking station and easily take my laptop with me and a spare mouse when leaving then just replug to docking station when Im back home.
@PeteJohnsMusic4 жыл бұрын
Hey there my friend. So, no latency with keyboard, mouse or other peripherals. The one caveat is the video output. It uses a separate driver which is absolutely fine for most applications.... except gaming. It's a common problem with many docking stations sadly, but can be worked around by connecting the monitor(s) directly to the laptop and then using the dock for everything else.

G'day Pete, how does it go using the USB interface plugged in? Any increased latency.

No significant latency that I’ve noticed actually. Pretty solid for video editing and audio production. Haven’t tried any sort of intense gaming so can’t comment on that, but it’s been really good in my experience.

Any tricks you can share about getting the laptop to connect to the internet via the ethernet port? Mine's not working and you didn't discuss a hardwired connection in the video. I'm connecting to my Thinkpad laptop using the USB-C cable provided. I have an ethernet cable connecting my docking station and my router extension on my desk. Any help is appreciated.

Hey there Jason. Hmmmm.... I have plugged directly in to my router from the network port and it has worked fine. I take it that it works when you plug directly from the laptop jack? Would love to help but haven’t come across anything like this sorry.

Thanks for this video. I was not able to get my display to work with this docking station. I tried a HDMI to DVI cable, AND i tried a HDMI-HDMI with a displayport adapter with no luck. I'm also not sure how to find out whether or not the docking station device was discovered. When plugging in or unplugging it in, there is a sounds, but I can't find this device on my devices/printers.

Dear Pete, I got this exact setup with 2 screens but they seem to sometimes have sprinkling dots all over and sometimes one of the screen blinks (Black then back to normal), its really disturbing and i'm trying very hard to fix it. I have updated all graphic and ports drivers and rebooted multiple time and updated windows. I am running out of options, have you heard of this problem? is there a way to fix it?
@PeteJohnsMusic5 жыл бұрын
Hello there my friend. This is most often due to either a faulty cable or a cable that is. It quite plugged in all the way. I would unplug and plug back in the cables to make sure they are in completely and screwed tight (if they are the type of cables which screw in). This is especially an issue with VGA and DVI cables with multiple pins. Good luck! Hope you get it sorted.
