Kool video. I recently signed up for Crashplan and while I'm backing up my data, I decided to see if I really picked the right solution. I'm hearing more about Backblaze and willing to test out. I can care less about a drive being sent to me althought it's still a great option to have because I may need it in the future. I appreciate you taking the time to cover this topic.

Your content is so amazing! Thank you for sharing your expertise. I was shocked to see this video has under 1,000 views-- I easily expected tens of thousands! For the last year, I had been using Google One with Google Backup and Sync as my cloud backup for the content currently on my laptop (I am a musician and music producer). I was going to expand the GB, but after some research and the help of your video I will turn to either Backblaze or iDrive, where I can also backup my HDs.

Thank you for this!! Subscribed & liked. A near-finished client project file corrupted yesterday and now I'm reconsidering my strategy. I thought I was good with a backup to 2 external hard drives to Time Machine, on 2 computers + icloud... but I guess not. Perhaps 1 messed it up, can't tell where. So now I'm paranoid and I'm debating between adding or replacing with Backblaze or iDrive. Would these be a replacement for iCloud or could use in tandem with it? And for the deduplication feature... can that be turned off in Backblaze? I'm not sure if it would be better to actually have duplicate variant files because perhaps the older version would be uncorrupted even if its a few steps behind in terms of completion? Thoughts/advice?

Yes dude, awesome video! I've been a Backblaze user for 3 yrs now as a videographer/photographer. And not too many guys in our industry know the benefits of it or it cops a lot of hate. I've got 12TB of photos/videos so my workflow is: Shoot > SD cards > 2TB SSD (working drive) > 4TB HDs (1st Backup) > ☁️ Backblaze (archive) on the 'Forever' version history so I can plug/unplug multiple HDs with no backup expiry. I could do always with another layer for redundancy though!

I just loaded iDrive and did my initial backup of ~1.5TB. My unify router tells me that it was uploading at 70MB, or >500Mb. It did take longer than that would imply - about 5 hours for the 1.5TB - so maybe there was some overhead or something else hogging some of the bandwidth, but still it seems much more than acceptable. I'm on an old 2013 MacPro (MacOS 11.6) hardwired to ubiquiti UDM-Pro, 1G fiber. BTW, I chose iDrive because we have several computers in the house, including a linux box and a NAS, and iDrive is MUCH cheaper than BackBlaze which would require a separate plan for each of those (and wouldn't do the linux box?).

Great conclusion! Thanks for putting in the work to test them all. I've been using Crashplan for years, but would agree that their upload is very slow! On Linux, at least, their client is Java based and uses a ton of RAM. However, they do support Linux which means it will run in Docker on my NAS. They don't support it officially, but it runs alright - other than the slow upload. At the price with Linux (NAS) support, it's hard to beat. Only thing I might do different in the future is setup a low-power Windows machine that I can mirror my NAS to, then backup that to Backblaze 🤔

It's ok, i'll answer - turns out that these backup solutions won't work for Google Drive - My Drive & Shared Drives, unless I mirror all files down to my hard drive. @nadavremez
@nadavremez 3 жыл бұрын
One BIG issue with iDrive you didn't mention. I just realized that their snapshots aren't "true" snapshots like you would see in say, local drive backups such as CCC. So, if you delete a file/folder in your computer, the next iDrive backup will not pick it up and exclude it in the next snapshot it takes. The result is that snapshots are bloated and messy and when you actually need to restore a folder, or an entire volume, it will look nothing like what your hard drive looked at on a particular date. It will contain a lot of extra files and just a general mess. I'm leaving them soon - just wondering where I should go to next.
@nadavremez
@nadavremez 3 жыл бұрын
@@PeteMatheson Such a big fail, you have no idea. I actually spoke to a supervisor at technical support there and he didn't have anything to say when I told him that the feature they refer to as "Snapshots" isn't really that. What is it, anyway? I just downloaded Backblaze and uploaded some myself and I can't think this is much better. It looks like you can filter the view based on when a file was *uploaded* to Backblaze. So seems like it's going to be a similar cumulative clusterfunk. Let me know though what you come up with!
@x3ko777
@x3ko777 2 жыл бұрын
@@PeteMatheson It is not a big fail. There is a difference between a sync service and a backup service. A sync service will reflect your devices current state - if you delete something from your device it will also be deleted from your cloud storage. The downside to this is it can't always protect you from things like accidental deletions, eg say you accidentally delete a video of your grandma's 95th birthday that you want to relive 5yrs later after she passed only to realise you deleted it years ago. A sync service will not have a backup of it because it was deleted years ago.A backup service on the other hand will still have a copy. If you want to permanently delete something from a backup service it can still be done, you just need to follow the instructions or use the built in management tools. No one should assume their way of managing data is the only way of managing data, because not everyone has the same requirements. There are different services catering to different needs. As always read what a service does before purchasing.

I was disappointed that you didn't compare storage prices among these systems. For example 1GB of data stored for one month costs: BackBlaze G2 Cloud: $0.005 -- iDrive: $0.00833 (I dropped BackBlaze Personal because: 1. other reviewers said that the inability to prioritize files for upload - 2. downloading files was difficult and slow.) I have about 12 TB I need to store off-sight. (It's all my own data; photos and videos from over the years that I might want to play with now that I'm retired.) I will take a look at Crashplan because you gave it a thumbs-up for it. Thanks for a great channel. I'm going to check your other videos to see if I want to subscribe. I'll comment if I do.

@@PeteMatheson I know that creating these reviews are arduous and take a lot of time to compare the details. I could not figure out how much Crashplan charges. Their pricing page is actually an FAQ. They just say $10/month/computer but they say nothing about storage capacity. If they have any info about capacity included in this fee then please point it out to me. They just seem focused on their "free trial" which wastes my time and really they seem quite unprofessional. I could also find no contact information where I could ask questions. Be very careful with Carbonite. It does not back up certain file types (apparently based on file suffix on MS Win 10.) For example, I had some precious slide shows I constructed over many hundreds of hours. The slide show software bundled them up as .exe files. Guess what, Carbonite ignores these and there is nothing I can do about this short of renaming the files to trick Carbonite. Well, it happened, a massive disk failure. I got almost everything back except my slide shows. Hundreds of hours down the toilet. In fairness to Carbonite, they do mention this on a a lengthy, small print read this document, but it didn't occur to me that it was not backing up my slide shows. In addition, there were audio tracks (.mp3) that I used in the shows and these aren't backed up either. The images I used to compose the shows are still there, but I can't bear to redo hundreds of hours of work. Be warned. Also, there are things you would think would be back up, but aren't. I had several years of tracking data on Google Earth, pins tracks, etc. All are gone with my disk crash because Carbonite refuses to back up files in user/appdata folders and there is no way to force this. Many, many hours of data, down the toilet with no way to retrieve it. Google keeps your location data on its servers for Google Mapes, but not Google Earth. If you keep a lot of Earth data, learn where the data is kept and move it out to a syncing service or copy it into one of your folders that are backed up so that Carbonite will pick it up. I am very depressed. I have been burned 3 times now with Carbonite and plan to move to another back up service.

I concur that Carbonite is one of the worst companies to deal with and their product is abysmal. I used it years ago. I backed up everything and their app showed that my data was fully backed up; itching but green check marks top to bottom. However, when I had a computer issue and I needed them to restore the data they only had about 1/3 of it. The customer service guy I talked to referred me to their terms and conditions that stated they don’t need to copy all the data to consider my computer fully backed up. Then he said sometimes it takes time but I had been paying for the service for over 6 months. And it was only a few hundred gigs. I told him they misrepresented themselves and that their product gave me a false sense of security and that they should refund me and the guy laughed at me. Since then I swore off service like this and I back up my data locally, thanks for showing my me that not all companies are scammers and grifters like Carbonite. I might sign up for one of these.

After trying iDrive for 2+ months, I don't recommend it at all. Ihad backed up some important client photos on it and when I had to redownload them, the photos were corrupted. Half of the photo was visible but the other half was grey. Contacted support and they blamed me that it's how the original file was. When I shared the original file from another backup of mine, they simply stopped replying.

So if signed up backblaze for 2 years for example, do a full backup of my main computer. Shut it off, and never use the computer again, the backup data will be gone after 30 days???? So I will just be wasting my money paying for 2 years service with no data backed up? And I cannot access it anymore after 30 days even I have paid for it? So this is the worst back service if it won't retain your last known back up data lol I am looking for a service like the dropbox data backup which retains your data forever once you upload it.

@@PeteMatheson they just told me today that if I don’t connect and back up my external drive every 30 days, backblaze does delete the data. I’m dumbfounded. How is this a back up service if it doesn’t actually save your data? Looking for a true backup option that I don’t have to consistently check in on. Ideas?

I will confirm his Carbonite conclusion - I'm a partner and I now find that I don't want to be a partner any longer. They used to be the best, but how the mighty have fallen!! BTW, you should have tested it on Windows, IT'S NOT THE SAME PROGRAM AT ALL. It's MUCH better on Windows as far as UI, settings, options, features, speed, etc (my fav feature is that you CAN easily tell it with one setting to backup ALL of the files of a certain filetype within the selected backup folders). But that 4GB limit.... they didn't used to have that.

iDrive encrypts the data contained within the file and not the file-name itself. Certain metadata related to files including file thumb derivatives may not be encrypted (Source: iDrive's Terms of Service). This is not ideal for those seeking full privacy.

If you have huge files, like videos that you edited and stored, these services don't back them up. There are rules for this. Also like the iDrive service and Crashplan(Code42) do not accept database files, .ISO files, virtual machines, among others. The list is long. Applications for Apple may even be acceptable, but for PC they are limited, especially Backblaze. Most of the world uses Windows, so benchmarks should be better on that platform.

Thanks, I actually feel safer now that you explained it a bit and will definitely keep backing up to flash drives so files are 100% safe.

I had wanted to do exactly what you're saying, Daniel. I tried using Dropbox as my 3-2-1 backup solution. We have a ton of files, as I'm a web designer, my wife is a photographer, and I do videography occasionally for clients. I had so many files that the Dropbox app became effectively unusable on my iMac. I spoke with support and learned that their desktop app can't handle more than 300k files. Soooo, Dropbox is GREAT for cloud storage, but if you have a lot of files to keep backed up physically AND in the cloud, it becomes untenable. Note that you CAN use Selective Sync in the Dropbox app to limit the folders that Dropbox will make visible and available on that particular device, which could then let me keep as many files as I want in Dropbox, so long as I don't care about having a local copy. But that defeats the 3-2-1 approach. Hope that helps.

Hi Pete, this was an OK video however one thing you can do to improve is understand the difference between MegaBytes (MB - note the capital B) and Megabits (Mb - note the lowercase b). There are 8bits to a Byte. Therefore 1 MegaByte = 8 Megabits. You use MB & Mb interchangeably when they aren't the same thing.
