Peter's playing can be outside but because his harmony and playing are so internalized and his swing feel is so present and the fact he loves the music, he makes outside sound inside.

Dude right? And it works both ways too, he makes inside shit sound absolutely hip because his feel, rhythmic choices, and time are so completely on.

@@AidanCarberry Once you know it, it's all inside. But sometimes you can play outside when you are in the zone and you aren't really cognizant of the harmonic form - so maybe that's what outside is. I know it's a nice day today, so maybe I'll go outside. 🙂

Both dudes obviously rip but I feel like Gilad starts outside and dips into the blues which by the end makes me feel like I’ve been in a funhouse mirror room for too long whereas Pete roots the whole thing in blues and dips into some truly zany outside shit, sometimes even smearing them together in the same line and idk IMO it actually sounds hipper as a result. But that’s just my opinion obviously both dudes know exactly what the fuck they are doing and are doing it with intention but god damn Bernstein just rips. Does that truly galaxy brain shit where he’s like hey instead of just “switching modes (not musical modes” between the bop-blues thing and the blues scale/trad blues thing I’m gonna smash that shit together on the microscopic level into one ii V. Gotta transcribe some shit from this
