Dick Cavett has been nominated for eleven Emmy awards (the most recent in 2012 for the HBO special, Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett Together Again), and won three. Spanning five decades, Dick Cavett’s television career has defined excellence in the interview format. He started at ABC in 1968, and also enjoyed success on PBS, USA, and CNBC.
His most recent television successes were the September 2014 PBS special, Dick Cavett’s Watergate, followed April 2015 by Dick Cavett’s Vietnam. He has appeared in movies, tv specials, tv commercials, and several Broadway plays. He starred in an off-Broadway production ofHellman v. McCarthy in 2014 and reprised the role at Theatre 40 in LA February 2015.
Cavett has published four books beginning with Cavett (1974) and Eye on Cavett (1983), co-authored with Christopher Porterfield. His two recent books -- Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets (2010) and Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic moments, and Assorted Hijinks(October 2014) are both collections of his online opinion column, written for The New York Times since 2007. Additionally, he has written for The New Yorker, TV Guide, Vanity Fair, and elsewhere.

David Bowie. Before it's too late, could you please, please ask Mr Cavett what the question and answer mean around the 20:5 mark of their interview when Mr Cavett asks Bowie: "Is your real name Menentious Spiegel Gatz?" Bowie laughs and it appears to be a private joke, but it would be great to learn what prompted it and where it derived from.

Dick was the greatest. Great charm, wit and the ability to to put his guests at their ease and get the best from them. Amazes me that so many American chat show hosts today make their guests sit the other side of a desk and much lower than them - terrible staging. Great quote here from Peter - ".... to preserve the democracy; stupid people should be represented by their equals".

Did u know Robert shaw was in a classic British war movie called the dam busters. , he sadly died in Ireland 🇮🇪 of a heart attack. Because he was living there . So sad they have all died now especially Dudley Moore . Rest in peace all of them and thank u for the entertainment u gave us all .

he had an amazing ability in an actor to seem much bigger than he was through sheer personality.he wasnt in life a particularly big man but watch the sting as doyle lonergan when he snatches the bottle off newman and seems to fill the compartment.or as henry 8th so much larger than life as he awes thomas mores family by his sheer presence. he was like it in life too .richard dreyfuss says he was a huge man 3 times the size of me and admits he terrified him on jaws.

@@sharoncarthy3764 From u.k. I’m 67 now, and my mums best friend had a brother who I called uncle Bill. He lived in Carlisle a north England city. And looked a lot like Robert Shaw about 8 on the 10 scale. I was around 12 yrs old, and mum said go and tell uncle Bill dinner is going on the table. Found him in the garage, pulling a bad tooth with dads rusty pliers! He said tell your mum I’ll be right there. I went back to the house, and told my mum his sister and my dad what he was doing. Which just got chuckles and shook heads, and my dad laughing behind his paper. A real character he was, very unpredictable never knew what he would do next. Wasn’t until I had seen jaws, that I realised how close the resemblance was. He came in and finished his meal like nothing happened. He served in Korea in the Royal Navy on the same ship as a bloke I worked with, who proceeded to tell shall we say a few things about him! He was born just up the road from Shaws birth place. Must be something in the water.

It's a little disheartening to hear Robert Shaw talk down his work in The Sting. It's a great film and he was a worthy adversary for Newman and Redford. Without a strong villain the story woyld have just collapsed. I saw it at a local last run theatre in '74 when I was about ten or eleven. I fell in love with the Scott Joplin score.

There aren't too many films better than 'The Sting' 🏆❤️.The film is as close to cinema perfection as it gets .Brilliant 😎Gifted actor Robert Shaw🏆🌟 🙏🕯️🌹💐😔died of a massive coronary on the side of the road in Scotland in 1978. apparantly his hard partying lifestyle and smoking caught up to him .. just my humble opinion..He did not die while golfing as has been reported in years past.. a great , troubled actor gone way too soon.. It's great how UK actors often judge other actors by their drinking habits. One of the best was the late great Richard Harris, the first Dumbledore in "Harry Potter." An interviewer asked him how he liked working with his young child co-stars, and he said it was great, but lamented that they couldn't join him at the pub after daily shoots.

First time I've seen this Dick Cavett show clip. Amazing for me, because I saw the 3 episodes of Peter Cook's show which he talks about here, and was really disappointed when his series was stopped. He was hilarious. Each show was totally unscripted, and although awkward that was one of the reasons I liked it. Nothing at all artificial. And now, decades later - in fact over half a century later - here's Pete telling me why it bombed.

Definitely a good move of Dick's to get them improvising. Much as I'm fascinated by how Peter and Dudley deal with an interview situation as 'themselves' the situation does become uncomfortable for all sorts of personal and professional reasons. Robert Shaw knows fine well, tiptoeing around their issues in a teasing way. Meanwhile Shaw himself betrays a few issues here with his professional life too. I'm not sure Dick fully realises the wisdom of it but another five minutes and the conversation could've got pretty miserable. There's a great Mavis Nicholson interview where Peter and Dudley DO open up about themselves and each other but Dick Cavett wasn't quite set up for that here. Phew! Good move getting them to do 'Pete and Dud' instead!
