Күн бұрын

Peter Gabriel's Full Moon Club update for March 2023, where he discusses the launch of Playing For Time, the third track to be taken from the forthcoming album I/o.
Listen to the full track Playing For Time from Tuesday 7 March: lnk.to/PG21
Deep Dive into the tracks from i/o on Bandcamp: petergabriel.b...
‘‘Playing For Time is a song that I have been working on for a long time and have performed live, without lyrics, so some people may be familiar with it. It’s been an important song for me. It's about time, mortality and memories and the idea that each of us has a planet full of memories which get stashed inside the brain.
It is more of a personal song about how you assemble memories and whether we are prisoners of time or whether that is something that can actually free us. I do think it’s good to push yourself towards more bold or interesting experiences because then you will have richer memories to feed you when you get to my age. You also get taught by every meaningful experience that you go through.’
Written and produced by Peter Gabriel, Playing For Time was recorded at Real World Studios in Wiltshire and The Beehive in London, and features Tom Cawley on piano. The orchestral arrangement, by Ed Shearmur, was recorded at British Grove Studios in London with a number of players who previously featured in the New Blood Orchestra.
Cover image: Mes voeux (avec nos cheveux) by Annette Messager
'I’d seen the work of Annette Messager, who is a wonderful artist, many years ago and nearly got her involved in the Art from Us project, but this time I thought she’d be exactly the right person to ask to do something for this song.'
Gabriel’s thoughts about time were, in part, influenced by the work of the Long Now Foundation, and Danny Hillis’s extraordinary invention, The 10,000 Year Clock, which is an idea designed to try and encourage us to think long-term. ‘I’m sure that if we have a chance of surviving the existential problems that we now face we have to start thinking much bigger and longer to make some real headway. So, I think what they do is enormously valuable and there are some amazing talks on their website, so for those that want a deep dive into the role of time and long-term thinking, the Long Now Foundation is a wonderful place to start.’
- longnow.org
The deep-dive Peter mentions in the film will be available to subscribers over on Bandcamp: petergabriel.b...

One of the most unique, beautiful voice of our time. I’m begging my cousin to take me to your concert in September! I need this experience as you are so beloved and have this energy that brings emotions out of all of us. I have cancer.. strangely chronic, off all cancer meds, waiting patiently for my place in this next world. I hope to see your beautiful eyes of blue and voice of love. Surface meaning, slightly submerged consciousness and unconscious depth of primal emotion. Yes, it’s one of Gabriel’s greatest ever songs. I have avoided the deep depth of this and only arrived at it today. Boy, it is stunning.

Peter is continuing to advance new ideas and concepts which inspire us and especially me personally. His idea of a vast "recording" medium made me realize that our close family members have recorded so much of our family history in our minds. We got together and played back each one of our historical compilations while celebrating my mother's passing 4 days ago, it was like revisiting our favorite songs and episodes of our family life. Thank you, Peter, for provoking inspiration. Steve P.

After losing my Dad quite suddenly last summer-the man responsible for instilling an immense love of PG in me-this song came at me like a comet. Absolutely beautiful. As an aside, my Dad always said he wanted Solsbury Hill played at his funeral, and I think I was the only one who remembered that. There wasn’t any means for which that could be done at the location of the funeral, so while I gave his eulogy, I had Solsbury Hill playing quietly on my phone in my pocket. Thanks for that, and thanks for this, PG.

But her memory isn't there to help her anymore and she is so lost. It's sad to see someone in that condition. Things that were so important in the past have just vanished. Hi Peter, just wanted mention your theme of time with this particular track and how it got me thinking. Believe it or not, at age 62 I am a fairly recent discoverer of your music in any meaningful sense. I served with the RAF from the mid/late 70's to the late 80's, at the height of the cold war and terrorism around the UK and Europe. I spent a great deal of time serving overseas and that experience made me somewhat oblivious to normal everyday life and culture that most young men live through. Strange as it may seem, I have known your name for much of my life, and yet only recently really discovered your music. In some sense I am kind of grateful that this was later in life ,as I believe I have a much greater appreciation and feel for your music. I think as we age we are able clear much of the clutter from our consciousness, freeing us to experience things in a very different way. I do very much appreciate what you do for everyone. Thank you.

Hi Peter: I saw you perform Supper's Ready in Rochester when I was in college in the 70's. Had a music major friend who turned me on to your early music with Genesis. I must say, over the years I've had the deeply emotional experience listening to the end of the song Supper's Ready (what a masterpiece the entire album is), when you sing: Lord of Lords, King of Kings Has returned to lead his children home To take them to the new Jerusalem In my life, one of the most profound musical experiences I've ever had, and there have been many. Many times while driving in a beautiful setting, I'll almost scream the words while singing along with the song. I must also say, you have delivered to me so many times in so many different ways through the years. The emotional power in the son "Signal To Noise", when you sing: Man, I'm losing sound and sight Of all those who can tell me wrong from right When all things beautiful and bright sink in the night Absolutely crushes me and makes me weep when I hear it and am alone. Saw you preform it in a Casino in Connecticut. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to getting to know your new music. Thank you for all of the deep experiences that will certainly be stored in my memory to revisit when memories have mostly faded. They are permanently etched. Much love and respect, 🌿 Cary Smith @carysmithart

It's a lovely song and one that captured me on the first listen. The melanchony of the piano mixed with the progression into full orchestra to tell the story life. So nice to hear you mentioned Randy Newman which was the first thought I had when I heard it, and it almost sounds like a movie sountrack for a new Pixar movie. Definitely a song I will go back to for as long as am not only a picture on a wall. Thank you again for writing great music and I am looking forward to hearing you live in Bergen soon.

Thank you so much,Gabriel, for these tremendously profound thoughts on time, memories etc. Looking at our memories as s.th.that gives our life a sense of m e a n i n g (identification, belonging) at t h i s point of history evaporates ,as the only reason to be has become money and nobody cares about anyone's memories unless you make them money with your memories A great musician like you, whose feelings, words wisdom and music penetrate peoples' hearts - if they have money to buy your CDs - might make a difference but here in Germany I am only surrounded by people who send me bills and are not even able to have a conversation on anything else than money...
