Peter Gabriel has an art degree, and started his own production company. He always has his hand in all of his own music videos.

Peter Gabriel had some of the most interesting and fun videos along with his great music.

Yeah this was a classic back in the day. It played all the time. All of his did when they came out, because they were so visually interesting! (Even if you didn't like it, the potheads were like "Dude you gotta see this")

OK some context: when these videos were made the effects were pushing the bleeding edge of what was possible, as in it was the 1st time anyone had seen anything like it. Peter had always had a thing for the weird and dramatic, so he definitely was deeply involved in the production and concept. I recommend you check out the live versions of these songs from Secret World Live.

Peter Gabriel would do some pretty crazy on stage costumes/lighting and act out his songs back when he was the front man for prog-rock era Genesis. So he basically had a strong interest in the visual component of his music from the beginning. He was the main driver for that too, the other Genesis guys weren't that into it and honestly some of it is pretty out there.

Personally, I found enjoyment in the old Genesis before Collins became the lead. Everyone from that band were quite brilliant IMO. All were creative enough to find success on their own. Even Mike Rutherford who created Mike and the Mechanics. I enjoy all of them solo.

Gabriel has always been a bit bizarre, but a genius IMO. Especially his days as the front man for Genesis in the late 70s. Weird clothing, weird makeup, etc. He was just an experimental musician. Even in these music videos he shows it.

The song "Digging in the dirt" (and of course the music video) from the same album got me hooked back then. As a contrast, you should listen to one of the pieces that were produced before "So" and "Us".

The Digging in the Dirt lyrics are pretty dark and surreal.

I think, when Gabriel left Genesis, hmmpf,..he was let loose, his videos were always incredibly imaginative, and wild,..he always had a hand in it,..if it's in the video, he wanted it in there,..always, always, always,..this album came out in 1992,.so at that time,..it was played a lot on MTV, I remember,..loved it,..and yes,..lol loved when Peter stepped out, all pimped out,..crazy,..Godspeed, Peace ✌

Just remember, this was 1992, so CGI was still fairly primitive. This was mind-blowing at the time. This was before the original _Toy Story_ . It was wild. This was definitely on MTV and VH1 back then. In case it wasn't totally obvious, this song and "Sledgehammer" are ALL ABOUT SEX.

Stephen R Johnson teamed up with Peter Gabriel on this video as well as Sledgehammer and Big Time. This one won a Grammy for best music video and 2 MTV VMA awards for Visual effects and editing. Yes it is about what you think it is.

You’ve covered all his big 60s horns sounding songs. There’s so much more to him. Going back to 1977 and his first solo album. Solsbury Hill or Here Comes The Flood. His second album, try DIY or On The Air. On his third album it has to be Games Without Frontiers or I Don’t Remember. Then on his fourth album try Rhythm Of The Heat or I Have The Touch. All 4 albums are simply called “Peter Gabriel”. Then he released So (you’ve reacted to Sledgehammer and Big Time from that album) then “Us” (which this song is from) and then “Up”. All are worth a listen but delve back into his past first and work forward. If you want to :-)

Peter Gabriel has always been a cutting edge artist in all the media he could put his hands on. I think his whole legacy is on par with the likes of David Bowie and Elton John. The CGI parts are reminiscent of the movie "The lawnmower man" from 1992. BTW, his previous song "Sledgehammer" was pretty explicit since it was his take on the old blues subject "I'm a king bee, let me get a taste of your honey pot", if you check again this video you'll see it's all about living reproduction (even the chicken and egg metaphor is about it). Personally, the only MJ video where I would give an A is "Scream". Mark Romanek is an effing genius.

Not Bowie... Bowie was a master of the time and the place. Gabriel not so much.
@chucku00
@chucku00 2 жыл бұрын
@@John-kj3xr What is a "master of the time and the place", did he has the ability to suspend time or to teleport from one place to another? Honest question. You can say what you want about Bowie but even if "Life on Mars" or "Ashes to ashes" are masterpieces among his other songs, they aren't more culturally or socially meaningful than "Don't give up", "Biko", "In your eyes" or "Solsbury hill". I'm pretty sure David Jones himself would agree. Don't idolize your favorite artists and just take them for what they are : human beings just like every one of us. Bonne année.

Thank you,! Number one. I like to discover new things. And i just started this channel last year so im pretty new. But the main problem is that KZfaq has became more strict about reaction content. Anyways thank you for the input I appreciate it. Also i am doing a live Q&A soon and I REALLY need questions. So if you could go to my community tad on my channel and ask a question on the post, it would mean a lot to me and there will be cash giveaways during the live stream. If not its ok. Still appreciate you being part of the channel.
