When Adam Savage visited Peter Jackson's collection of cinema props, costumes, and artifacts, they opened up legendary Hollywood make-up artist John Chambers' CIA make-up and prosthetics kit. Chambers supposedly used kits like this to help the CIA disguise its agents!

An excellent book that makes extensive commentary on the use of these kits is The Master of Disguise: My Secret Life in the CIA. He mentions working with a hollywood make-up artist but never mentions the name. Now I know. It's a fascinating story and I always wondered what those kits looked like. Now I know that too!

I’m late to the party but for anyone interested, these weren’t created so a CIA Case Officer would be walking around with it to use somewhere. But elements of the contents could be pocketed for that purpose. The purpose of the kit and why Chambers put them together for CIA is so a Case Officer could meet “Walk-Ins,” people that walked into American Embassies claiming to have information, etc. So the Case Officer could change his/her appearance dramatically with this as the person waited in the lobby or a private room, etc. That way they would not be readily identifiable as an Intelligence Officer later on. Hostile Intelligence Agencies can just send people in that claim to have vital information when in fact they’re gathering information themselves.

These were used well into the '80's and not just by the CIA. Grenada, Nicaragua and other more subtle hardly noticeable regime changes in South America and around the world were effected with these identity changing kits. Yes, prosthetics were included.

I watched a documentary where one historian told us they had pocket faces. They were either rubber masks that were tight fitting but it would always change your appearance quickly and drastically. It would turn you blonde to brown or have a beard when you didn’t really. They wouldn’t hold up under any kind of scrutiny but if they were being chased the run in to a crowded place pull the mask on and walk or sit down quickly to throw them off. One guy told a story of being chased down the street he pulled his mask on which made him bald and have a beard. He put on glasses and casually walked the towards his pursuers and they ran right by him. I don’t know how true that is but the historian did show one of the pocket masks.

imagine exact this situation whenever the CIA agent tries to contact HQ. *** Sigint: Ah, you're wearing the mask. I made it myself. Pretty good work, don't you think? A while back they were planning to disguise someone as this one GRU officer and send them in to steal some secret documents. I created the mask for that operation. But then the mission ended up being canceled...and then the major came and told me to throw it out? Can you believe that guy? Snake: But you didn't throw it out. Sigint: Are you kidding? Tossing a superior quality product like that into the garbage without using that would be an insult to science. Snake: What's so great about it? Sigint: Everything. But if I had to pick one reason, I'd have to say it's because it's the first mask ever that can blink its eyes. Snake: What about the lips? Sigint: What's that? Snake: Can it open its mouth? Sigint: Ha ha ha. That's a good one, Snake. You're crazy, man. Snake: I'm serious... Sigint: Are you even listening to me, Snake? Where's your common sense!? Damn! Snake: S... sorry...?

Utterly fascinating. Like being at a high fashion runway show, one hardly knows where to look next. The various questions of the "full head appliances" are, if they are real, were in service and used-- what on earth for? Unlike the Mission: Impossible gang and certainly the new movies-- it would be pretty obvious that something was amiss if you were to see such a full-head mask in person. So was this for photographic purposes? Appearance in crowds, a middle-distance view-- either a picture or perhaps in a real world setting? The quick look of the b&w pics seem to show a latex, full-head mask. Was this around the time of Bau foam? Lightweight foamed latex? Or was it straight latex? I thought Bau did his work in the 50s (or was it 60s?). Hard to tell from the pics. So-- the next big question is which came first? M:I, POTA or super-secret CIA full-head appliances? The TV Mission: Impossible was in 1966, POTA was released in 68, but had to be in production well before then-- 66 maybe. That's plenty deep in the Cold War-- Lastly-- as Adam asks, was it ever used in any detectable way? 'Detectable' by archival photography? Have we been looking at old, grainy photos and seeing what THEY wanted us to see? Hmmm.
