Peter Pan & Wendy is a 2023 American fantasy adventure film directed by David Lowery from a screenplay he co-wrote with Toby Halbrooks. Jim Whitaker served as producer on the Walt Disney Pictures production, which is a live-action remake of Walt Disney's 1953 animated feature film Peter Pan, in turn based on the 1904 play Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up (also known as Peter and Wendy) by J. M. Barrie. The film stars Alexander Molony (in his film debut) and Ever Anderson in the title roles. Jude Law, Yara Shahidi, Alyssa Wapanatâhk, Joshua Pickering, Jacobi Jupe, and Jim Gaffigan also appear in supporting roles. The story follows Peter Pan and Wendy, who go to the magical world of Neverland with Wendy's brothers and Peter's best friend Tinker Bell. Along the way, Wendy embarks on the adventure that will change her life and encounters Peter's archenemy Captain Hook.

the 2003 Peter Pan remake literally hits all the notes he was talking about. It tries new things, and they actually work. Despite it being live action, Neverland looks AMAZING. Hell even the JOURNEY to Neverland is stunning. Like something out of a dream. The dynamic between Peter and Wendy, Hook and Wendy, Hook and Peter is also incredible. Like, that film is THE benchmark for all Peter Pan movies for me, even the animated one doesn't come close. It still has that spirit of what makes Peter Pan, Peter Pan but when it does try something new, it actually sticks the landing. God the soundtrack is also so pretty.

@@zaadus112 That flying sequence is TRULY so magical. The theme too? Gorgeous. So whimsical. I do like the animated one too, with "You Can Fly" the way the chorus is very old timey, like you're hearing it out of the radio is super nostalgic. And the camera movements are AMAZING for the time. But what puts 03 PP above the animated one, is Peter himself. There is a REASON he was EVERYONE'S childhood crush at one point lol. He actually cared a LOT about Wendy, was super protective of her, whereas in the animated on Peter could be downright mean sometimes. 03 Peter could be too, but he still had this boyish charm that cements him as a childhood love. That laugh Sumpter did is just so endearing.

The most embarrassing thing about this film is that the idea of Peter dealing with a more combative and pro-active girl was already done in Return in Neverland and executed much better. Jane was a stubborn and grumpy stick in the mud, but the reasons for that were entirely understandable and she was allowed genuine growth as a character. She's a reverse of the animated film's Wendy and they organically built story elements around that. Wendy in this film is just the novelty of her as a bratty tomboy with no development beyond that.

Wendy not being a mother-like figure continues this weird trend where femininity is seen as "flawed" and something that needs to be "fixed" in these reboots. In other words, they just write these girls as masculine, which is kinda backwards and sexist in its own way. Femininity and masculinity both have strengths and weaknesses. Wendy being like another lost boy doesnt "empower" her, its just making the statement that she was weak before - despite Wendy being, by far, the most powerful character in the book. (Note: when I refer to femininity and masculinity I am of course not referring to male/female sex, its a separate thing)

 that’s definitely an observation that this film has seem to reinforce. @@shootout-shinobi6672 In general, that seems to be a problem when writing female characters.... if not characters in general who they want to portray as "I am strong, and I don't care about gender roles or expectations". AND the worst part is that you could at least have an interesting scene of people discussing what's "feminity" or what's "masculinity" (or, be extra and include characters who are non-binary or transgender). EIther the character's take on it, how they feel society and other people trust upon themselves, or their opinion preferences. You could have say, a female character like a very stereotypically female thing, and make it clear she likes it because She genuinely likes it. It's her own decision and taste to like something that happens to be seen as "stereotypically female". Or what people see as "strength" in general. The compare and contrast between someone who is strong physically but either mentally or emotionally weak, and someone who is very weak physically, but VERY strong emotionally and /or mentally. And what the characters want or perceive as a weakness.

You are speaking facts, except for the final note. Yes, while masculinity/femininity and the male/female sex do have some differences (keyword SOME), saying that they are not interconnected to their respective sex in any way whatsoever is just incorrect. Men and women can exhibit both masculine and feminine traits, but men are obviously gonna do a stronger job at displaying masculinity while women do a stronger job at displaying femininity. Because men and women are different, regardless of how hard the media tries to skew those differences. Masculinity isn't always about being overly tough, and femininity isn't always about being delicate. It's nothing disrespectful or sexist, it's a fact.

To be fair, Peter was abusive in the original book (going as far as to kill any Lost Boy who so much wanted to grow up or cut a guy’s hand off just for the laughs), so he would probably be deserving of at least a couple of slaps - if not an outright punch to the face. I hope Doug reviews Peter Pan & Wendy again as the Nostalgia Critic. I feel like the changes they made to the Peter Pan story here not only don't work because they are still following the original Disney version but they betray some of the original ideas of the original book. Tinkerbell's jealousy towards Wendy is a huge part of her character, the reason there is no Lost Girls is because the original book implies girls are smart to know better to not to give into the temptations of Neverland. Don't even get me started on how Wendy gets the ability to fly because of some forced, girlpower message. Despite its flaws, I think Peter Pan 03' is the best live action version of the story. As for Disney's take on J. M. Barrie's story, watch the animated version.

@cthonisprincess4011
@cthonisprincess4011 8 ай бұрын
@@RoseBaggins In J M Barrie's canon, this isn't true; the book makes it clear that he is not dead. But he is described as being a psychopomp, as he's described as guiding the spirits of children who've died along part of the journey to the afterlife. One backstory JM Barrie gives Peter in the book 'The Little White Bird' is that babies are described as having once been birds, and after being born, Peter remembers this and regains his power of flight. Still, when a bird named Solomon Caw points out that he is no longer an actual bird, Peter loses his ability to fly, so he lives in Kensington Gardens with the birds and the fairies for a while, learning how to play the pipes for the Fairy Orchestra. Because of this, Peter becomes only half-human due to the magic he's experienced, known as a Betwixt-and-Between. The Fairy Queen decides to grant him two wishes one night. He wishes to regain his ability to fly so that he may return to his mother, stating that she keeps the window open for when he returns, and his second wish is to be held in reserve. But when Peter returns home, he finds that he isn't ready to grow up, so he temporarily leaves without waking his mother up, promising to return to her. Twice, he returns home, longing to show his mother affection but fearing awakening her, he plays her a melody on his pipes and leaves once more. Finally, Peter decides to return home permanently, telling the fairies that it was his second wish, but when he returns home, the window is barred, and another baby has been born, so Peter returns to the Gardens. One of his playmates in the Kensington Gardens is a little girl named Maimie Mannering, who gets lost in the gardens after closing time, and they spend time playing together, even having a fairy wedding. But despite their friendship, Maimie doesn't want to return to Peter, as she knows she wouldn't want to leave him, so she leaves gifts for him, including an imaginary goat that the fairies make real. It's described that every night, the fairies would build a house in case of any lost children Peter finds in the gardens after dark. From what is written about Maimie, she's likely the prototype character for Wendy, as there is a lot of crossover between the two, especially with thimbles and kisses. Peter does reference some of this story (running away from home and living with the fairies) in the book of Peter Pan, but JM Barrie does state in the narration that no one knows if the backstory is true, but it's what Peter believes. Peter doesn't grow up because that's a choice that he's made, and fulfilled because he's no longer fully human.

I don't know. The Captain Hook backstory just was all over the place when it's explained Peter cut off his hand and fed it to a crocodile. Like yeah, that's still f-ed up he does that in the original story, but Hook is just a evil pirate in the original story so it doesn't make Peter Pan look like a total psychopath who mutilates his friends if they don't follow his ideals.

Wendy not being a mother like figure continues this weird trend where femininity is seen as "flawed" and something that needs to be "fixed" in these reboots. In other words, just mean they write these girls as masculine, which is kinda backwards and sexist in its own way. Femininity and masculinity both have strengths and weaknesses.

Here’s the thing people have to understand about these Disney remakes, and even most modern marvel and Star Wars movies, even Disney’s own animation studio now, it doesn’t matter who the director is, Disney only wants a product now, not art. Everything feels so same now, down to the cinematography, humor, and bland and safe stories. Disney has forgotten what it means to take risks and be creative and if they don’t change it could lead their downfall.

My older sister is probably the biggest Peter Pan fan, so growing up I’ve seen basically every iteration. After watching this version, my biggest takeaway was that it was boring. The movie in my opinion followed the basic structure of the original story without making the movie engaging. You have a story filled with fairies, pirates, mermaids, and the magic powers of flying and not growing up. How does one make that boring? Most of the time the characters didn’t even fly around Neverland (which looked more like Ireland than a mythical island), they walked. Also the relationship and chemistry between Peter and Wendy was pretty much nonexistent. Even though Wendy doesn’t want to grow up at first, she is supposed to want Peter to be attracted to her and not see her as a mother figure. The only addition to the story I enjoyed was the part at the end where we find out that Wendy’s house used to be Peter’s. I think that adds a nice touch as to why he would visit the Darling house in the first place. Other than that little detail, I found this to be another forgettable Disney Live Action Remake.
@cthonisprincess4011
@cthonisprincess4011 8 ай бұрын
The idea of the Darling House having once belonged to Peter really isn't all too new; I've seen a few people speculate in the past that the Darling House may have been the place that Peter was once born or that Maimie Mannering, a playmate of Peter's from the Kensington Gardens, was potentially a young Mary Darling (there is a bit of evidence in the book), and that the fairy wedding he and Maimie shared could have formed a bond between him and her female descendants.

There's a Vocaloid song about peter pan that has a good plot twist. In "Portrait of the Pirate F" (don't read if you don't want spoilers), Peter Pan kills hook and, when time passes, he gets bored because there's nothing exciting to do and every day is the same. So he goes to the ship and puts Hook's clothes and start "playing" that he is a pirate. Then, while Tinkerbell is watching Peter, she remembers a time when she took a child to Neverland, revealing that the last Hook was also a Peter Pan long time ago. So, at the end, this song is about a cycle of Peter Pans defeating Hooks and, when they get bored, they turn into the new Hook and everything starts again with a new child.

I've heard people complain all year that the girls aren't called "lost girls," and there's a very simple reason why they don't that has nothing to do with Disney accepting concepts of gender fluidity: "lost girl" is a semi-antiquated euphemism for sex workers/prostitutes (though it was used as the title of a 2020 for a true-crime drama movie (at least I think it was based on a true story) about a serial killer who was stalking sex workers). It's also the title of Alan Moore's erotic comic series about Wendy, Alice, and Dorothy, and I'm sure Disney doesn't want any brand confusion with that. I'm still not sure how they missed that back in the day with Return to Neverland, in which the main character was marketed as the first lost girl--honey, no you're not.

Especially with the performance and reception to this film and 2023's The little mermaid, the public interest is waning and the box office numbers aren't hitting what they use too. This forces Disney to return to their more creative roots and we may start getting Quality films again.

The problem with modern movies switching out the race of a character in not just the race itself, no matter what the fake wokes will tell you. The problem is that there is never any effort made to justify our normalize it in the context of the story, which is even more frustrating when there are very obvious ways to easily do so. For example, the black elves in the LOTR tv series could've just been a race of elves that had already left the lands by the time the movies took place, and the dwarf queen could've been a descendant of an elf and dwarf couple from a past generation. Truly minimal effort to lore-build around a casting choice. But without it, it really just gives off the impression that the company not only didn't really care about the casting other than just having "the obligatory minority", but even worse, may actually be trying to benefit from the controversy that it creates. And honestly, a lot of these talents deserve better than to just be exploited as drama fodder. So yeah, I can tell Doug is still trying to keep away from the rabbit hole that is modern race politics, but his take is still pretty shallow.

Between their efforts of diversity in film feeling half-baked for the performers themselves usually or the fact that there are sometimes good ideas but the execution never takes advantage of them better, that's Disney's output for the past 6 years for most of their big products, and it's frustrating to see when the have the budgets and resources to take so much better care in those regards compared to most.

1 year old You can't stop time, growing up is an adventure itself, we can always find where we belong, a real boy would apologize and recognize his mistakes The flying sequences are breathtaking like before, the cinematography is sharp and smooth, and they give you a sense of scope when it comes to Never Land We actually get more of Peter and Hook's backstory and why their history is so checkered Much of this remake does feel edgier than previous incarnations given how much darker the book was in its themes It stinks Michael and John are background characters plus Jude Law seems too young as Hook (he does give the role plenty of dimension) But it's refreshing Tiger Lilly gets a more active role The ending I gotta say they do a massive change for Peter Pan's beginnings that might make or break the movie It's missing a lot of the cutesy kidsy moments and less songs are present but thankfully it has the swashbuckling spirit thanks to director David Lowery He makes a very mature adaptation out of all the others that have come before that's much more adult and very melancholy
