Peter, Paul and Mary perform "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" live at their 25th anniversary concert in 1986. Now, two and a half decades later, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the formation of the group in the famed Greenwich Village, this joyous yet deeply moving live concert is being first released on DVD by Shout! Factory.
Get the DVD here: www.shoutfactory.com/?q=node/1...
The track was originally written by Pete Seeger. Peter, Paul and Mary included it on their first album released in 1962. It was one of the rare folk albums to reach US#1 - staying for over a month. The lead-off singles "If I Had a Hammer" and "Lemon Tree" reached numbers 10 and 35 respectively on the Billboard Pop Singles chart.
At the Grammy Awards of 1963, their recording of "If I Had a Hammer" won the Best Folk Recording and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal Grammies.

Lyrics:
Where have all the flowers gone, long time passing?
Where have all the flowers gone, long time ago?
Where have all the flowers gone?
Young girls have picked them everyone.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Where have all the young girls gone, long time passing?
Where have all the young girls gone, long time ago?
Where have all the young girls gone?
Gone for husbands everyone.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Where have all the husbands gone, long time passing?
Where have all the husbands gone, long time ago?
Where have all the husbands gone?
Gone for soldiers everyone
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Where have all the soldiers gone, long time passing?
Where have all the soldiers gone, long time ago?
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Gone to graveyards, everyone.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Where have all the graveyards gone, long time passing?
Where have all the graveyards gone, long time ago?
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Gone to flowers, everyone.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Where have all the flowers gone, long time passing?
Where have all the flowers gone, long time ago?
Where have all the flowers gone?
Young girls have picked them everyone.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

I am 77 years old. I have 2 Purple Hearts and was trained as a paratrooper. I volunteered to go to Vietnam because I had read the Gulag Archipelago and One Day in the Life of Ivan Ivanovich, and I knew that what those books wrote about I did not want in this world. I was evacuated twice from the field. The second time I eventually ended up at Walter Reed where I underwent reconstructive surgery. I was happy to be out of Vietnam. They made all of us paratroopers airmobile, helicopters. I saw and experienced, and did many horrible things. War is hell, and pointless. Communication is the key. I totally agree with PP&M, the song hits the truth on the head. I still don’t like the way the Russian government and Putin execute the war with Ukraine and suppress their citizens who protest the war against Ukraine.

2023…. Still no change….. since then Afghanistan, Iraq, Ukraine….. all young men dead, on all sides, human beings pumping lead into each others bodies in the name of reaching “peace”…. Land, oil, religion, POLITICS!… Cuba, Russia, china…..the list is endless…… this song still holds so much meaning for those of us who believe in the sanctity of life, for all humans and the expanse of a planet which is large enough for us all to be as separate or together as we choose!…. We’re still praying for peace! 💚

Every word you said is correct, however most people will elect or vote someone from the UNIPARTY meaning either a neoliberal or neoconservative that vote 👍 yes to EVERY single battle or war. The only politician/president we’ve had in my entire lifetime that actually tries diplomacy and a war last ideology is being smeared 24/7 by corporate media at the behest of the weapons industry. We’re headed to full scale nuclear war but msm has morons convinced Trump is the most dangerous politician.

This is one of the first songs that I remember hearing. I had a babysitter in the early sixties who played acoustic guitar. She would play this for me. No wonder I now play and write folk songs myself. Early influences matter most.

The boys lost their hair but the trio never lost their style ever. Love how Mary gets the audience to sing along with them. You'll notice many young folks in the audience who weren't around when the trio was in their peak period of 1962-65. A great version of this song. Must have been awfully hot when they were performing.

In the 60's I heard them sing and fell in love with them. I especially love how they turned down record companies, when told they had to give up their protest singing, and they still turned out to be so wonderful because they refused to compromise on their principles, integrity, and that stayed with me all my life. Thanks Peter, Paul & Mary for teaching me the importance of standing up for what I believe in I know to be right.

I think without question, the most beautiful song ever written only seconded by blowing in the wind. It’s disgusting to me that such beautiful songs such as these ever had to be written. They speak of the horrors and inhumanity of our race. I think of my friends who lost their life in Vietnam and I look back at how young and innocent they were. When I play these songs, and I do it often, it brings the image of those young children who were sent off to war. I sometimes sing these in my garage studio, but I don’t think I have the emotional control to sing them in public. When will we ever learn? How many times must the cannonballs fly, before they’re forever banned? How many times can a man turn his head and pretend he just doesn’t see? Awesome lyrics, when will we learn?
