On October 26, 2023, a hybrid film screening of the documentary "Medicating Normal" was presented at the UCLA Iris Cantor Auditorium. This is clip from the recording of the post-screening expert panel discussion and audience Q&A. The full recording can be found here: • UCLA - David Geffen Sc...
Peter Eliasberg (featured in this clip) was a member of the post-screening expert panel. Peter is a civil rights lawyer who lives in Los Angeles. Before going to law school, he worked as a freelance photographer and, before that, coached rowing. His life was upended for 4.5 years after he got off an #antidepressant way too quickly. The harmful effects of #withdrawal were exacerbated by his being prescribed a #benzodiazepine that he was advised would help with horrific #insomnia, which was one of the symptoms of antidepressant withdrawal.

It has nothing to do with the length of time you use. There are people in very very protracted withdrawal/ recovery from a few month or less use of AD. Thank you all ( female Europe almost healed after 40 months from AD after stopping) keep up the good work❤

I took Ativan (Benzodiazipines) for only a total of 33 days off and on and did a cold turkey and here I am almost seven years and still going through protracted withdrawal. Still struggling with lingering withdrawal symptoms mostly body aches and pains and some off balance problems when walking. Certainly worst experience in my life!

The medical profession is deeply flawed! The people in these professions have a moral obligation to know better. I don’t know what the incentives are for them to be as oblivious as they are, but they MUST know they are in the wrong. I can at least understand how a lay person that hasn’t went through any of this might have a hard time understanding. It doesn’t take much research to figure out that basically that vast majority of the psychiatric profession is pure bullshit! Many of them run off of cultural values rather than research. It’s very clear that people are treated with disdain when they need help and I just can’t even fathom how much someone must lack compassion and knowledge to behave in such an unethically and morally reprehensible way!

Awareness of the devastating harm these psychotropic drugs can cause is paramount! But, just as important is the reality that ones originally underlining condition does not magically disappear just because you decide to wean off your medication. A Balanced discussion & perspective is needed here ...... Sadly, there's no happy ending for this hideous disease

Oftentimes, there is no underlying condition - bc it was a diagnosis of a normal life problem - hence the title of our film. Many people take the meds for 5, 10, 15+ years - and their entire life is different then from when they were prescribed - and when they get off, and heal (if they manage to), are totally fine and without any "condition." Perhaps some people struggle with things still, but they can go on to get therapies and other assistance that they probably should've tried before meds in the first place (as many are as effective, if not more, in studies, than meds).

I totally agree. I have been on a cocktail of drugs including antidepressants, diazepanand morphine. I have been trying to withdraw for 4 months now. I emphasise with the speaker completely. Life is hell at the moment. 😢

Internal tremors , feelings of electrocution, resistant hypertension, dehydration, suicidal thoughts, begging God to take my life, accused of being a drug addict after 30 years on dalmane. I was cold turkeyed for 4 mos. Pure total hell. Insomnia , severe tinnitus, the list goes on and on. I found a np who rekindled me on diazepam. The only reason I am alive today is because of her. Nobody else even remotely believed me.

We don't have to tell them. They already know, and have known, of these HORRORS for many, many decades. You will Never get them to admit to destroying so many people. Not even a little bit. Deny, deny, deny. What a joke.

These doctors work for Big Pharma and that’s where their allegiance are… not to the patients. Some accept kickbacks for the drugs they prescribed. There is a government website site where someone can go to find out if her/his doctor (s) is receiving kickbacks and how much. That said, they’ll never say the truth even when evidences are in front of their eyes.

Who would suggestvit? The " social worker" working for the government, NOT A DOCTOR,who keeps refilling your prescription? She'd be out of a fake job. Why would she help you get better?
