Interview with @peterwindsor where we preview the Bahrain GP, talk about who is the pace setter, why Mercedes should abandon anti dive suspension and why Liberty Media need to take advantage of Max Verstappen's dominance. @peterwindsor suggests that Oscar Piastri should have stayed at Alpine and why Alonso decision making needs to be called into question. What Peter thinks about drive to survive and why he thinks an engineering version of the netflix show might be an even bigger hit. Peter talks Kimi Antonelli and why he doesn't trust the mass media attention and hype.

I’m really glad that you brought up the fact that there needs to be more emphasis on the technical side in terms of media output. I was watching testing the other day and listening to the regurgitation of talk about Hamilton’s Ferrari move or it being a make or break season for Checo. Then Sam Collins comes in and gives some excellent insight into some of the technical developments the teams have made and does so in the way you described as being digestible for people without that technical background. I found this refreshing and much more engaging. On another note, I’d really like to see more conversations with engineers, Marshalls, fans etc. I understand that drama is a vital aspect of the sport and enriches it in so many ways but I feel that a more all-encompassing view of the sport would be a huge benefit to everyone. Instead of trying to speculate what the drivers are thinking about, why not focus more on the countless others involved in making the sport what it is? This is probably a poorly formed comment but I think the essence of what I’m trying to say is apparent.

Peter always waxes lyrical about Oscar Piastri. However he clearly hasnt followed the move from Alpine to Mclaren as closely as he should and forgets the time line of events. Saying he would have had the measure of Ocon ignores the fact that as far as Oscar was concerned and his manager Mark Webber Alonso was negotiating a new contract with Alpine and Oscar may , and it was not certain, have been getting a drive at Williams. Also Mark Webber had asked repeatedly for a contract for Oscar months earlier. He was a free agent and offered a firm drive for Mclaren in 2024 (not 2023 as it depended on Danni Ric ) which he signed weeks before Alonso jumping ship. We can all , with the benefit of hindsight say what if. Oscar has an issue with tyre wear and yesterday a top strategists said , not talking specifically about Oscar, that reducing tyre wear is not something that happens overnight and with some drivers they never master it. Depending on the car you have to often change your natural driving style if you still want to be competitive as well. Lewis often comes back as races progress because he has mastered it. I know Lando is known to be very good in this area so its not a given that Oscar will get on terms over a season with Lando. He will of course have his successes as they both will.

I disagree with the tiger woods analogy. One can appreciate every shot tiger made throughout each win. Not true when max is at 60% throttle 25 seconds ahead. They barely even show him. Where as a 25 stroke lead by tiger would be covered shot by shot

Great stuff as usual Cam! 40:34 I don’t agree with Peter here. Liberty media may try to “capitalize” on max verstappen’s dominance, but the problem is that max isn’t marketable. Max is a simple guy who hates social media, and marketing. Golf was able to capitalize with Tiger Woods because he was very marketable, with sponsorships like Nike.
@PeteDavis65
@PeteDavis65 2 ай бұрын
I would also say Golf is a different animal to F1 in as much as people don't tend to follow individual players on the whole, they just tend to appreciate great playing. F1, certainly in the current era, is much more tribal and dominance, by any team, is likely to be a turn off.

Peter's timelines are not accurate on the Piastri to Mclaren controversy. Oscar signed his contract a month before Alonso made the shock switch to AM. Piastri was being told there was no room for him in 2023 and the plan was to ship him out to Williams for a year or two. But Mclaren snuck in and the rest is history. Once we learned the actual timelines it was clear Oscar didnt screw over Alpine and he did is the same thing every other driving prospect and manager and team principle and F1 media critic wouldve done if they were presented the same options.

You're chucking a whole load of IFs into the Piastri historic situation guys. Work on what was in front of Piastri at the time - there was no vacant Merc seat, or even any expectation of one. And if your employer declares your destination before you've signed any contract... And you shouldn't request 5-star reviews - the judgement is down to your consumers.

What I don't get is - if Liberty Media upped their gros income so much over one year, why can't they open their wallet to money to more teams? Liberty could easily solve the Andretti/Cadillac situation by just opening another one/two potential team slots on the grid, and still being able to pay the ten teams what they get now. Do a proper due dilligence on new applicants. Andretti should surely go thru.

New to this podcast and have been impressed with the last few eps. Have been watching Peter for a few years. Great insights from him, and from Scarbs on tech. Totally agree with view that capitalizing on the tech and other "nerdy" aspects of F1 would be interesting to a lot of fans. F1 is a rare sport in that it's perfect for tv, has small number of players, has brands, has tech, has exciting race events (there's always hope), has race strategy, has driver talents, is global... There are so many ways in which fans can find their way into the sport. DTS just goes to show how much more F1 could cover of its own behind-the-scenes production. Disagree though that Liberty could celebrate and make a success out of Verstappen domination as Tiger did for golf. They're totally different cases of success, achievement, importance, etc. Most of all race to race domination by one and the same driver makes the races uninteresting. (Whereas to witness a masterclass by a golfer is aesthetically compelling to any viewer, regardless of who his or her preferred golfer is.) Uninteresting races will absolutely drain the sport of its core drama, and sap the rest of the narratives of importance and relevance. Not to mention, IMHO and this purely personal, Verstappen is not the most compelling individual, biographically or on camera. But that's another matter.

@basdollevoet2824
@basdollevoet2824 2 ай бұрын
I agree with this comment. Cameron was referring to " new" DTS F1 fans, but what about F1 fans who are already watching for years. They know periods of domination are part of the sport (McLaren 84-92, Ferrari 00-04, RedBull 2010-2013 and Mercedes 2014-2021). Cameron is known to be a Lewis Hamilton fan, which of course is fine, however hearing a Lewis Hamilton fan complain about domination, ehh it just feels a bit hypocrite. As did Hamilton himself actually when complaining about Red Bull having an unfair advantage last year. We didn't hear Hamilton complain when he had the engine advantage. Only thing he said was that other teams should raise their game. Also, when you look at F1 viewing statistics it is quite clear there was a MASSIVE decrease in viewing numbers 2014-2017 -> did Cameron talk about that on his F1 channel? I don't remember. To be honest I enjoy his video's and work, and he is one of the best F1 YT channels available. But this complaining about dominance just feels weird coming from a Hamilton fan. Don't want to bash Cameron for the rest

@@basdollevoet2824 Exactly, and same here.. I enjoy this channel, especially collaboration with the Peter, but some of these things are really recurring. Peter sounds like a ad for Liberty. He mentions the mistakes of the past as if now it’s ok to make the same mistakes! What about Andretti, has Liberty handled that perfectly? What about the ballooning costs? More artificial route they’re going in? More street tracks instead of purpose built tracks that cost millions to make and are now just wasting away? Besides since Liberty is swimming in cash money isn’t an issue. So why not go back to good tracks again? Peter is the perfect Liberty suck up.

For all of Peter’s wisdom and knowledge, I believe he is wrong about Piastri’s decision to race McLaren over Alpine, and possible Mercedes option from 2025 onwards. He has forgot that prior to the summer break in 2022, Oscar did NOT have a drive for 2023, with a possibility of another year on the sidelines, or in a rubbish car as a last resort. At that stage I can understand him looking to secure his own future. He was ONLY confirmed for Alpine once they were caught with their pants down by losing Alonso, otherwise he was again a second thought to Alpine….

You and Peter are wrong!. You are agreeing with a statement that has a lot of facts omitted or completely ignored. Oscar had no F1 contract from Alpine for 22 or 23 even though Mark Webber chased Alpine for months and months for it. Alpine even almost cost Oscar his SL and reserve role by rushing through a reserve contract for 22 they even resorted to fraudulent behavior by adding to an already signed document. Oscar had no race seat in June 22 for 23 none with Alpine who had every intention of signing Alonso for 23 and using Oscar as a pawn to low ball Alonso. So Oscar was facing 0 race seats in F1 23 as of June 2022 until Mclaren came asking about him. This only ever became a thing when Seb retired in JULY 2022 opening up an out for Alonso. All this after Alpine already failed Oscar an F1 seat for 22 after Oscar did nothing but win for them in their academy.

Russell's teammater for the past 2 season has been the greatest of all time. And you think a rookie Piastri would pressure him? The reason Albon looks good is because he has a useless teammate. The reason Russell doesn't stand out is because he has a good teammate. If Russell's teammate was Perez, Sainz or Albon for instance, you would be raving about him. Thanks for feedback! I'll have a play. Thought the sound was good. 😭

I'm not a sound engineer. I think you are fine and Peter's end has problems. A bit muffled. Quite a bit muffled. Maybe it's because the mic was not upright and "pointing" at his mouth? From time to time I reject youtubes because of poor sound, I listened to all of this. So it wasn't super terrible for me. I decided to check the sound and listened to Peter. Then I wanted you. I skipped 5s at a time through from about 2min in. I got to 9m before it wasn't Peter!!! God he talks a lot. Thanks.
