New Zealand is famous for a lot of things... having tons of sheep, Lord of the Rings, the All Blacks (our national rugby team) just to name a few.
NZ is also well known for its outstanding natural beauty but there are a ton of interesting and random fun facts about Aotearoa too (the Maori name for New Zealand) which we aim to share with this list we've compiled.
Having grown up and lived in NZ almost our entire lives, we've put together this list of random things which we think may surprise those who aren't so familiar with New Zealand. Some of it comes from friends, family and people we've worked with over the years who came from other countries and shared what they found confusing, funny or surprising about NZ while a few facts were newly discovered by us in more recent times.
Hope you enjoy this list and you might also like to check out:

Both of you need to stand up and take a bow for being TRUE kiwis ! Honestly,this was such an enjoyable upload because both of you really GET IT ! For any folks overseas watching this - this is pretty much your template for an introduction to the Kiwi way of life. Not sure how you two came up with this episode,but a big ups to you both. Had to chuckle at your food section,as I know that is Peters favourite hobby - hehe...and finally - Yen,what a legend pronouncing the world's longest name (saw the original upload) but to do it off the cuff as you did - bravo.

Thanks Rob 😁💪 appreciate the feedback on the video. It was a fun one to make cause it's all stuff that is so normal to us but would be pretty different from non kiwis looking at us. Figured it was the perfect time to put together while Auckland was getting all the down pours hahaha.

Fun facts, fun vid!! Thanks guys!! Stay safe and happy travels when you get back on the road~

nice to catch up on clips of your trips and as only a guy has visited your amazing country i like rob below is spot on, as an english guy at the age of 73 i have read and looked at many things over the years about new zealand , but i was not prepared for the wow factor when i arrived, every corner i drove around was a photo shoot, amazing.and peter and yen were so kind to meet me and have lunch with me , i can tell everyone that they are exactly as they are on the videos two fantastic down to earth guys trust me they really are, and although they are both of asian descent they very well represent the kiwis that i had the pleasure to meet, one of the most memorable holidays of my life and as peter and yen both know i am certainly well traveled . hence god willing my return soon, and peter gotta say the bungy jump made me chuckle again . you are much braver than me although i did have a go on the zip wire on whakiki island , loved every moment hahaha, again another brilliant video well presented by two very nice people . take care looking forward to the next one whenever that may be .thanks

Your electricity is 240. Here in Canada we're at 120. A lot of your language is British based and pronounced. My brother moved from Canada to Auckland in 2019. He now says "ger-ridge" instead of "gar-rage". "Lift" as apposed to "elevator". "Lorry" instead of "truck". His water for his rental house is collected from the roof instead of a municipal water system. The house does not have central heating or air conditioning like Canada. He has mini splits in a few rooms. Those are some differences, we've noticed.

Love this email and learning all these inside facts. Yen is the master of the longest word in the world! So freaking impressive! Dying to go see the black sand of the NZ beaches. Smoking in the Balkans is something very present. In Serbia, people can smoke everywhere. In Turkey, they can smoke in designated areas, but all restaurants have a designated area. Europe has gotten stronger on smoking rules, but the south countries are the most relaxed towards it. ALL fish and seafood drive me insane!! Meat pie, me want to try 🤤🤤 Flat white is my favorite coffee outside of Spain. And yes, when Starbucks rolled it out, they all said it was an Australian coffee, even a bunch of Australian coffee shops started opening in NYC with the famous Flat White hahaha

Though English is by far the most commonly used and predominant language in NZ, interestingly only Maori and NZ Sign Language have official legislative/legal status: www.parliament.nz/en/get-involved/features/have-you-seen-parliament-s-multilingual-resources/ www.ethniccommunities.govt.nz/resources-2/our-languages-o-tatou-reo/ There was a bill trying to get passed a few years ago to make English official too but not sure where that's ended up since it's already the defacto official language: i.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/101497027/analysis-why-english-does-not-need-to-be-made-an-official-language So yep, by all means English is definitely the most widely used in NZ and the defacto official language but official legislation-wise it's Maori and Sign Language which surprises most people understandably 🙂

Here in the U.P. In the great northern Michigan(US for those of ya that don’t know nuthin lol)…your “meat pies” are a staple called “Pasties”(pauhh-stees)…but the best and real ones from our history of development only have- Meat, potatoes and rutabaga….We still eat them at least once a week with a big 6 figure income(I was very poor 3 years ago lol) even though they were thought of or brought here by and for the poorest, working man of the early 1800’s.

Also taxes in the u.s. is increasingly becoming a pain in the ass. More and more complicated getting to the point with certain tax years you have to spend a month prepping. Wandering what the tax situation is like there.

I live in Miami I'm 51 but I'm looking for a change. a country that number one stays out of everybody's affairs, far less population , not so globally connected. Much less tension and a crappy economy, cuase it doesn't attract the masses. Like here. New Zealand is on my list

I’m wondering how do Kiwi feel about British accent? I’m deciding if I should just learn the British accent or kiwi accent. Will people consider you an outsider if you speak with a British accent?

@@PeterandYen Thanks for your reply and good on you for living the lifestyle you want . I have never been a career person and lost many years due to a few things that i won't mention on here , but photography and drumming is my thing and i have made money from both but not so much .My last job was in the engineering field and it will be again even tho i don't really enjoy working with people apart from p/graphy .I lived in a caravan park when i first moved to AK , so a slightly different upbringing to what many Chinese childen experience .I have been to approx 35countries and enjoy seeing the world or part of it . I have a little saying i recently learnt which is -- Everything we do is either an act of love or an act of fear , but it takes a while to fully understand that . Once again thanks for yr reply and great videos . x Let me know if you get my little saying i recently learnt please , it may sound a tad simple to some , especially those focused on $$ which we all need , but i agree with the saying and hopoe you do as well .

Photography and drumming are two awesome interests and skills 🙂 it's great when you can make a bit from the things you enjoy and love doing ay. Thank you for sharing your story. A different upbringing to the norm indeed but those different experiences in life are often character and strength building 👍 That is a nice saying.. it makes sense and resonates for sure. It makes me think of a saying that I like which is on a similar vein (though a little different) and that's "being brave doesn't mean not being scared, it means in moments of fear, going on anyway". Go after what you love we say.. life is too short and precious to be living anyone else's dreams but your own and you can't let fear get in your way 🙂

Nz embraces their indigenous culture so well.. here in Australia I feel so disappointed that our government and Mainstream media don’t integrate aboriginal culture in our lives
@PeterandYen
@PeterandYen 2 жыл бұрын
It is a great thing about here but it took time as well and for some people to come around to it more. Definitely should be embraced though.. culture and cultural diversity is a wonderful thing. Get to learn so much from each other 🙂 it's also good to be respectful to the indigenous people of the land. Do you see any change or improvement in Australia at all with embracing/integrating more aboriginal culture into daily lives?

Coffee origins - don't care. Good coffee is good coffee. Great coffee is in NZ. Full stop. End of story. Right? Pavlova? Give it all to the Aussie people. This Kiwi is not a fan. Can't stand the stuff. But the pies... Homemade is best. Steak. Mushroom. Onion (not red, not caramelised). Just a hint of paprika. Potato top, not a pastry top. That was a cool little video. I think I'll have to watch a few more, even though I live here in NZ.
