I'm about at the same level as that screenshot you showed. I'm not worried at all by the changes money wise, that's not why I make films. I'm worried about the youtube algorithm suggesting videos with ads over others. I want people to see my work even if I don't make money.

Steven Healy Luck maybe, but more important, good niche! Also my point was that monetized videos doesn't have an advantage against not monetized videos, the problem it's that people upload videos and let them there waiting to hit some views, and not sharing it by themselves, a channel will not grow without some push.

2:07 as much as I love Casey and Peter i have to say that this is a little misleading. Casey sold his HBO special for millions of dollars before he got really serious about KZfaq so whether he monetized his channel or not is irrelevant because he had the OPTION to not monetize and work on his craft ( which is totally cool). The reality is that most people do not have that legroom financially and most just hope for youtube to finance their projects sooner than later into their journey (specially if you're on the 9 to 5 grind). Great blog!

the idea of something like 'being accepted as a youtube partner' or even making your first '0.55 cents' is always bigger than the money - it's a feeling of acceptance... when i first got those two things i felt like i was apart of the community and my participation was being appreciated... you guys always speak about being apart of the community - think of this like youtube telling you - you're not longer apart of that community and you need to try harder... it's a bit discouraging especially when you worked hard and got through their original milestones...... well at least that's my $0.02 (ps. my channel cleared the 4k hours/1k subs...and i still felt bad for other creators/people).

For creators like me, the idea of monetization is something I use (used) as motivation to continue producing content. It's so easy to get discouraged by the amount of effort I have put in and the haters out there on the internet. Regardless of how small the actual money would have been, it was still an achievable goal for me, and now it feels like KZfaq has moved the goalpost.

I think the actual problem is that KZfaq promotes videos that are monetized a lot harder than unmonetized videos. This is something a lot of creators are aware about, and it's HUGE!! People who just make a hobby out of it, and get a kick of dopamine out of seeing their numbers go up and don't care about the little money they make will see their channel suffer greatly once monetization is removed.

I came into this thinking i was getting one thing, and got SO much more! That's what I love about your channel. Really well done. So many people want the quick fix and don't want to put forth the effort for the long haul. We (my dad and I) started a channel, Forest To Farm, where we bought 20 acres of forest and are building 2 houses on a homestead for my parents and my wife & me. The channel is steadily growing without any promotion and we just keep plugging away. I don't see it as an instant way to make a living, but I see it as a great passive income because when someone new starts following they will have hundreds of videos to watch following our journey of turning a forest into a farm. Plus, like you said, put your passion first. We love to share how to do things, and this is the perfect medium for that. Thanks for the video and keep up the great work!

While I agree with most of the sentiments expressed in this video Peter, there are circumstances where this is a major bummer. For some creators, their videos actually cost money to make. The few bucks they were getting from Adsense were handy in balancing out the cost - so they could support their 'passion' /hubby. They weren't actually making profit. My channel for instance, even though I qualify for the partner program, virtually all my videos get demonetised for about 90% of the view time. So I'm down to about 10% of what I had. It means the channel is no longer sustainable at this rate. I still make videos out of my own pocket, because I love what I do, but not everyone can afford to do that. Obviously KZfaq don't owe us anything, but it's still a shame.

I've literally just begun my KZfaq Journey, but my true passion is fishing. Watching this video truly makes you look at the core values of why you do what you do. 1. Authenticity 2. Generosity 3. I got the email and what people keep saying is you don't make that much money, well I made just over $500 last year alone. That goes a long way towards paying for the things I need to make videos. I didn't start KZfaq with nice things and I'm paying off loans on kinda nice things so that I could do this. Without the adsense that monthly payment can't be made as easily and I feel like I'm being screwed. So yeah, I'm really ticked about the new rules. I've been on youtube since 2009, and been a partner since 2011. I have had ZERO strikes, warnings, anything. I'm getting stabbed in the back and that's how I feel. I don't have a skyrocketing audience and my niche doesn't have that potential. my niche is small and I'm happy with that, I can't change that.

it's not the demonetization.. it's the moving of the goal posts. I worked hard to hit the threshold, passed it and kept going (in fact I've added half again in only a month) but the word from YT was "we're behind in our review status we'll email you when complete" when in fact they had no intention of reviewing as the rules were changing. That's what gets me most.. honesty & transparency. Clearly they knew the rule change was coming, just email me and say so!

Good luck with that Toughest part people like me work hard for the content we produce and I do believe our content sometimes is way better than way bigger channels yet we don’t get 1/4 of the exposure they get !

I agree the amount of money we small KZfaqrs make is negligible. I can't lie though, at least it was something. Even without it, I won't stop creating videos because I enjoy it. They seem to help people. It's funny how you started with 800 subscribers. It's been a struggle for me to get to half of that.
@TheNotBusyLife

Yes, the couple hundred a year that I'll be losing isn't huge, but it would be nice to feel like I was earning some equipment. You may not have 800 subs, but I'll bet that you have a lot more than 6800 views!

The Not Busy Life I have the 4000 watch hours and a good amount of views, but getting to 1000 subscribers in the next week or so isn't going to happen. I like your channel. I always joke with my wife that I'm going to move up into the mountains and live off the grid. Simpler life and all...your minimalism journey is interesting to me. Question how did you get an over an extra 100 subscribers so quickly?
@TheNotBusyLife
@TheNotBusyLife 6 жыл бұрын
Hey, you never know! Thank you so much for visiting my channel and for your kind words! Since the new requirements came out I'm up about 400 subs now. Honestly, it's just been a lot of hustle. I've gone from one video a week to two, I've filmed four collabs, I made a video about the new requirements and have been updating my viewers on my progress, bought a mic and have tried to figure out some better lighting, I've joined lots of new groups on Facebook where I've been chatting and sharing my videos, tag my videos as a small youtuber on Twitter, started trying to figure out Reddit, commenting on lots of videos, searching for new channels I love to subscribe to, it's been a lot of hustle! Basically I've just been trying to get over being shy and get my videos out there. If I figure out the secret trick to actually growing fast, I'll let you know!
@MichaelWTurner
@MichaelWTurner 6 жыл бұрын
The Not Busy Life I do all those things you mentioned except for the collabs. Honestly although I share my videos and comment, I really don't do it enough. Really it's because I haven't gotten over the shyness like you have. Your advice is good. I need to hustle. There's alot of value to your channel and there is to mine too. I just have to give people the opportunity to find it. Thank you and good luck.

The thing that sucks though is that KZfaq can keep changing the needle so those that are reaching for those goals never catch up. Like for example, I was already a KZfaq Partner for free, then April last year I needed 10,000 views. Now I had 10,000 views and waited 2 months just to find out there is a new goal...1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours watch time. There's nothing keeping KZfaq from changing the goal again. Next time it will be 10,000 subscribers...who knows! And what's worse is that there is no grandfathering in. This makes KZfaq look untrustworthy. Of course you can keep trying and don't give up, but after achieving goals only to find out that it doesn't matter is VERYYYYY frustrating!!!!!!

To be fair, Casey could afford to spend lots of time making videos he wasn't getting paid for because he was already pretty rich when he started. From the perspective of someone who isn't, that model makes far less sense.

geoffphuket I heard that they will send checks of whatever balance you currently have in your adsense account. Can't 100% confirm that though. KZfaq's communication has been absolute garbage and it has led to a lot of misinformation being spread around. KZfaq needs a better communications director.

Big fan Peter, but don’t agree, you guys are all missing the point, it’s the principle. When these changes affects the little guys, it’s suck it up. When the changes affects the big channels, I see a lot videos on how upset everyone is. This was a transfer of money from the small channels to the big channels. I’m not bitter nor will I give up because I’m not here for the money, it’s just disappointing. 10 million demonetized, $ 1 billion dollars in ads being transferred from the small channels to the big channels. I made a video about this.

quietlysecure Actually we do. There are THOUSANDS more small channels on KZfaq than big channels. There is something like 300 hours of video uploaded to KZfaq every minute. I would wager to guess about 95% of that is small creators and even though 1 may not generate as much revenue as Peter does per video, thouse 300 hours a minutebis bring billions of people to KZfaq's site. So yes, the small channels do create a HEAVY amount of money for KZfaq

As much as I am happy for you Peter. You have only known phenomenal growth. A reality 95% have not experienced. Please understand that I am not saying you have not earned it (your channel content is second to none) but for many of us motivation is a bit harder when growth trickles in. That .55$ is a sense of pride taken away from us. The example of Casey is also a bit off as his KZfaq reality was really not the same as ours. Love the channel. Keep up the god work. And by the way, I love what I do and consider myself lucky to be able to do it. Cheers!

You're an inspiration! So true, so right. I think sometimes we get blinded when there's money involved. I started with KZfaq when there was no monetization at first. I just loved to make videos and yes, like you said it was a sense of community, relating to other people. Granted, I did stop because of personal issues, but now I'm back and hope to be better than ever. Now there's monetization and that's a bonus, but I really do have a passion for creating these videos and sharing it with the world. 😄
@jwardell

It’s not about the money or the passion. KZfaq is built on the shoulders of tons of random searchable content. They are taking away our encouragement to make occasional small projects or product reviews or all the other things that don’t fit the celebrity daily vlogger model. They are chopping the legs of what KZfaq has always been-the place to search and find videos for random things. Why should I bother putting the effort into a review or repair video if I don’t have any hope of getting at least a little back for the effort? Google is supposed to be about search and ads.

Anything made straight from the heart is something not even worth doing but shows the true love and this authenticity that automatically gathers people around. I totally get your point but I think you are overseeing a thing about this whole AD policy topic: Correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I know it was proven multiple times, that the KZfaq algorithm strongly benefits content that is monetized. For example MatPat posted a photo on Twitter some time ago that shows how the analytics prove, that as soon as videos are demonetized they get less and less attention (propably caused by the algorithm). And to me this would make sense for KZfaq as a company because the monetized videos are the ones that are making them their money so they should support them from a busines perpective. For me KZfaq was never about making money, because, let's face it, the AD policy of KZfaq only benefits the company not the creators, but when I put out a video, short film or music video I worked my ass off to create, I want a fair chance to get noticed. When I put out a video I want it to be seen. And when you just start out and don't have friends who are already popular or a big intagram accout this chance is robbed from you by this new policy. But these are just my thoughts on this topic... PS: I'm from Germany so please excuse my bad english
