There are many ways to prevent Japanese beetles from coming to your garden and prevent them from further damaging plants if they are already present in your area. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist, and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers to learn more about plants and products that can help repel, reduce or eradicate the problems caused by Japanese Beetles. When taking preventative measures, planning early in the season is key. It's important to begin with lawn care such as GrubEx® or Milky Spore Grub Control because they begin as white grubs in the lawn and mature to adult beetles in the landscape. If you're already experiencing issues with Japanese Beetle damage in the garden, we recommend trying sprays such as Bonide® Japanese Beetle Killer, Tomato & Vegetable spray, or Rose Rx 3 in 1 spray. The key thing to remember when spraying for Japanese Beetles is "see bug, spray bug". 👍

I got rid of Japanese beetles years ago when I discovered diatomaceous earth (DE). I haven’t seen Japanese beetles since. I go around with my mixture of 1 cup DE: 1 gallon water in my sprayer every 2 weeks.

I have a climbing hydrangea that they’ve never really bothered too much until this year. I thought the plant was suffering from lack of rain until I investigated. It was loaded with HUNDREDS of them. We went to Petiti and decided we needed an instant solution to start and bought the Japanese beetle kill spray Within minutes they were dropping off the plant and my driveway is littered with dead beetles! Directions state not to use again for at least 3 days but I was so happy with the results of how to deal with an infestation instantly to help gain the upper hand. Thanks for the product!

You have just confirmed my suspicion. I have two crepe myrtle bushes (2 × 2) about 25 feet apart. The Japanese beetles love, love, love one of the bushes. The other has ornamental onion planted next to it. The beetles ignore it completely. Thanks.

Wow! So cool. Hey, what town are you in? I got Crape myrtles from Arbor day. They are 6 inch twigs right now. 3 surviving with leaves out of 10. I live in Struthers.

@@WeezieV I live in overland park, ks zone 5b. I'm going to try to take a photo but I'm not that savvy. Nope, can't figure it out. Sorry. I want to add that crepe myrtles are slow to push new growth in the Spring. I don't take the mulch away from the base of the plant until at least last of May. They love it HOT.

I have searched the internet over and over to find solutions for this pesty bug. They give general information but not as informative as your video. One question I had was if planting ornamental alliums around plants be effective like regular onion . Thank you for finally answering this. Also I never heard about bee balm as a deterrent. Planning my garden with these plants will help. Thank you! ❤

Thanks so much for watching! Yes, ornamental Alliums can serve as a deterrent to Japanese beetles, but keep a close eye on the other plants, scouting for any damage. The mint family is vast, so Bee Balm, Catmint, and Lavender, etc. are very aromatic and are also capable of deterring. Enjoy.

Thank you for the informative video :) I no longer have a lawn but they are still coming over to my roses, hydrangeas and hibiscus plants! I try to hand pick them into a container of soapy water but there are some coming over from the park where they feast on wild vines which grow over onto my cedars (very tall). We don't have those products you've recommended here in ON, CA. Is there anything else you can suggest?

I do not have a lawn and grow most of my roses in large containers. My Japanese bottle problem is fairly minimal but I’d like it to be zero. Can I add the grub ex to a container and does it have any effect on aphids?

What about using these types of chemicals around your fruit trees that you plan to eat later? I'm sure the trees would pick up the chemicals as well.

I can list those plants in order.... Grapes, roses,/cherries, plums, peach, apple..... We have ALL these on our lot and this is the order we find the densities of these beetles. Living in the city, and only having control of our own lot (being at the mercy of neighbors who don't see the problem as they only have grass) they show up every year. I haven't yet done any chemical control, but this year they were horrible, must have trapped 5,000 of them. So we willl be treating our grassy areas... Question, Do we have to treat the garden areas also ? as the dirt there gets turned in the spring....

Unfortunately if neighbors don't apply the grub x etc. You will still have beetles. You just can't extinguish them all. Everyone around you has to do prevention for it to work successfully.

If Japanese beetles are from the grubs in the dirt, why not kill the grubs with tide laundry soap and water it in. Ive been doing this for years and never have had grubs. Just makes sense to kill them before become the Beatle.

It's fine to say that different products will kill Japanese beetles. What's more important is to tell us what else all those products will also kill. I only want to kill this particular beetle without killing anything else. Which of these products does that?

My Cana Lilys were getting munched on by something. Leaves looking like they got shot by machine gun, holes all in a line. No worms, slugs or caterpillar things. Then one hot evening while grilling some goodies I saw em'.. like black jellybeans.. I admit that I gained too much pleasure sucking these things with my shop-vac..

They are gorgeous. Too bad they put holes in everything. There should be Japanese beetle feeders so we can enjoy their color, but they choose the feeder instead of our flowers.
