Great comparison. Can you tell me why you didn't create any air vents? I thought you always needed them.

I forgot to be honest i should have put some in. When I come to use the delft clay next time it was solid so I had to throw it away.

The one coin turned out great. Maybe the delft clay needed to be mulled/mixed up a bit more, didn't look like it had a lot of strength, but that was hart to tell for sure in the video. To me it looks like the force of the copper pushed you sand out from the mold on the 2nd one, which is why it did what it did. Try putting some backer plates behind your sand and clamp it that way.

Yeah I’m going to give it another try soon I will use some different techniques and see what work. But to be honest I don’t think you can beat petrobond

@@meltingipswich Delft clay is supposed to be a bit finer for dental and Jewelry casting, and a bit more in price. PB is more than adequate for anything we do.

I was going to say the same thing about backing boards on the moulds. It does look like it was pushed out. Or, maybe add some vents. Lots of different things to try. Another thing I thought of is, does the clay have water in it? It might have dried out from the heat and compressed with the copper being poured in? Kind of iffy on that, but you never know. Great video none the less. Awesome job.

With delft clay you really need to pack it into the Flask before you add whatever it is you moulding. once one side is complete the add the top half and continue to add the the delft clay. then you can add all your sprues and vents once you're happy with the moulding. Don't give up on it I practiced with the stuff, as for two years before going over to a petrobond and every so often I revert back back to the delft clay but unlike petrobond the delft clay will dry out.

@@meltingipswich I tend to store it in an old roses tub, and if it does dry out add some two stroke motorcycle oil but you will have to brake it up back into a fine powder, just as like reusing petrobond sand.

I am so sorry to have suggested that to you. I will stand in a corner and behave. I forgot to say that chopping the clay is better than trying to sieve it and really compact it to bring out the details, as well as keep it in the warm or it goes hard. Sorry once again and thank you for making the video.

I know I'm late to the discussion, but... as per previous comment(s), that is not delft clay. Looks like some cheap and nasty knock-off. If you do manage to get some real delft clay, you must use air vents. It is denser than petrobond or green sand and needs the vents to allow the gases to escape in a controlled manner. Delft clay works very well. Professional jewelers have used it for many, many years to make intricate pieces. Get the real stuff and I'm sure you will see a big difference.

Too bad.... but I think the good thing with DC is that you just need to add moist/water a bit instead of chemicals (oké, other then H2O) to get it usable again. But it needs to be just at the right amount of moist.@@meltingipswich
