Definitely would have been more helpful if you would have zoomed in to show us the finish on the surface of each of them. That's the whole reason why I was watching this video

Accidental discovery though, the claws left by the vents are kinda cool.

Excellent video. Would you consider using petrobond sand with fine 999+ silver? I'm wondering if that would be a cheaper way to get molds instead of using graphite molds. It also seems like you can customize the molds any way you want.

I'm new to pouring. Every time I "pound" the clay into the mold, the clay "cracks" in certain places. It usually doesn't crack or split, where I was using the hammer. When I add more clay, it still happens. Is it possible I'm pounding too hard on the hammer? Thank you in advance.

I really appreciate this video. I've been considering doing small castings in brass (a big upgrade from my rough castings using aluminum) and have been looking into delft clay vs petrobond. This is the first video that has clearly demonstrated both products. Again, thanks!

Thank you for posting this video! Would you say that there is really no difference in the quality of the pieces (smoothness, shine, etc.)?
@craigdabler-thediycastings7511
@craigdabler-thediycastings7511 7 жыл бұрын
The two pieces were virtually identical but I will say that if the item was more complicated then the Delft would be far easier to work with because it is a smaller grain and compacts tighter making it stay together better when removing more complicated designs. For big flat designs, the Petrobond works just as well and doesn't require venting which is a real plus.

What do you do with the silver that is poured over the sandcasting on the metal plate? Can you use it again or do it needs to be cleaned after that?

Any thoughts on the surface finish between the two? Looks like the Delft clay is a bit better, and the petrobond has the pads sunken more.
@craigdabler-thediycastings7511
@craigdabler-thediycastings7511 4 жыл бұрын
Petrobond is 140 mesh and Delft 220 mesh but after a simple file stroke they will both finish with the same amount of work. Delft allows for better detail since it is more compact and Petrobond can handle more fragile pieces so they both have a place in sand casting.

Craig, I know this video is old and not sure if you read your comments but i'd like to know where you get those clay molds. Do you just buy the standard aluminum then grind out your pour hold on the side? I see the typical round ones online but I cannot find one like yours. Also do you have a mold recommendation for casting something longer and more narrow? Specifically a rifle cartridge shape.

Sir: how do you figure the amount of silver or gold to use for a casting?....example, i have a sterling ring that weigh's 3grams, would i use 3gram's of silver to cast that same mounting? ....same question for gold say 10kt, it's a "dad's nugget ring that i got for fathers day some 15 years ago, weigh's 3 gram's. i appreciate your video, will be ordering some items from you in very near future...

For me, when sand casting, I feel it is important to have at least 1/2 to 3/4 ounce extra to both help push the metal into the mold and help with cooling the metal.

Dude!... ease off the oxygen you are destroying the silvers properties it will make very bad cast. That silver is so embittered you might never be able to re cast without refining.

I know, but after 40 years as a bench jeweler I actually have far more experience at this than it appears on the video. I also use the same metal multiple times when making videos and it isn't until its been cast many times that it starts to break down. I've literally cast the same 1 1/2 ounces of sterling silver over 10 pours before it is ready for refining so yeah a neutral flame would be better if making something for a customer but this isn't the case and both castings turned out fine.
